I acquired a reel with a rubber grip. This grip had electrical tape on it. What would be the best method for removing the adhesive residue? I'm thinking a mixture of dish soap and a bit of baking soda in very hot tap water.

Electrical tape is the absolute worse to put on reel grips, especially if it’s on Shimano septon grips. Isopropyl alcohol might work but I doubt it

Mr. Clean Magic Eraser Pad;  rinse with a cloth and clear water.

I’m going with @Jig Man WD-40

Both Goo Gone and WD40 work well for removing adhesive from stickers or tape and do not typically hurt the surface underneath. Either will work fine, then just clean with dish soap or Simple Green after you are done.

 

I use WD40 for removing remaining adhesive when updating registratuon stickers on the boat.

Pam cooking spray on a rag works wonders with adhesive residue.

Another vote for goo gone. And it also smells really nice too. 

If you cannot clean it to your satisfaction put a Winn Grip tape over the problem.  Will feel like a new Winn, lots of different designs/colors.

I used WD40, and followed up with a mixture of Dawn dish soap (to cut the oil), and baking soda (mild abrasive). The grip handle is now like new. This mix of Dawn and baking soda is a great hand cleaner for greasy fingers after cleaning reels!

Thanks for letting us know what worked. I've not run into this problem before, but I've used WD40 for similar applications previously.

 

When you use Dawn and baking soda, do you mix them together first to make a paste or get some Dawn on wet hands and a sprinkle of baking soda? I use Dawn, but I'm not familiar with the baking soda trick.

Sorry I couldn’t chime in beforehand but you chose well. Goo gone I believe may eat into some grip materials.
