Mystery canine illness

I don't want to start a panic here.  There is a unknown respiratory airborne illness affecting canines in about a dozen states, and it seems to be spreading rather quickly.  If untreated, it can lead to bacterial pnemonia, which is serious.

I don't take my dog to large public gatherings with other dogs anyways, so this is unlikely to affect me.  Places like boarding kennels and dog parks are ripe for rapid spread.

Might be best to just keep your 4 legged friend away from strange dogs for a while.  And if you need an honest, straight forward answer, talk to your vet.

Just a suggestion.

Just read about it this morning. Doesn’t respond to antibiotics which is concerning. Luckily it’s not often that any of my 3 dogs interact with strangers dogs.

When my wife was going through dog grooming school they said one of the worst things you can do is take your dog to the dog park. The vet sites she’s on echo this statement as well.

My dog never interacts directly without other dogs. He does walk around the neighborhood and get to sniff everything. It has been a rough year for him. I don’t need this to add to it.

That deal is one of the best parts about having your own 'dog park'.

Besides Tank stealing your hat of course  . . . . .

This is the thing that concerns me. Does fresh urine transmit it? Some people are slobs who don't pick up after their dogs. Does fresh dookie transmit it? I can keep our dogs away from other dogs, but they need to walk. Even demand it. We live in a neighborhood, so avoiding community toilets is unavoidable. They're everywhere. The pooches seem to sniff every blade of grass there and walk through them.

Some years back my sister lost her dog to hantavirus. Horrible way to go. The vet claimed all it took was for her to inhale loose particles from rodent droppings to actuate the infection.

@PhishLI that’s the other thing is is solely transmit-able from dogs only? What if stray cats get it or rabbits?  My dog having almost half mountain cur in him loves to track. So when he gets on a fresh scent he follows it excited till it ends. Hopefully it is just direct contact and only with other dogs.

As far as I can tell, its an airborne respiratory thing.

And I still think the best advice is what your vet tells you, not someone on a public forum.  Go seek out real answers if you're worried.

i disagree.  i get all my answers from facebook, and i think it's important to panic on a regular basis.   😆

disclaimer: i don't actually have facebook,  and i'm  not fast enough to panic anymore.

We've got a couple acres fenced in behind our house.  That's where Sammy (our beagle) lives.  He does like to go to the back of the fence and talk to the deer.   Dolly (our Yorkie) has never tried to take my hat off but she will grab my shorts.  Dolly goes fishing with my occasionally but never to dog parks.  I worry about her picking up some kind of illness at her groomers but we've been lucky so far.  I'll ask our vet if we need to take any precautions when taking her to the groomer.

my dog is a jerk to other dogs.   so he plays solo.

I have been watching this story, and it really will affect if I go to Taiwan with the wife or not, this spring.  I'll stay home to keep him home with me, solo.
