Probably look even better in the mouth of a big bass.

The only split rings that will never again be on my baits are the pear shaped rings. 

 

I "prefer" ovals as line ties if I'm not using snaps.

Oval split rings are better because there isn't a change of the line getting caught in the o-ring. All my baits I have replaced the line tie with an oval split ring or removed it for a cross lock snap.

For you guys who use different makes of split rings, do you find the sizes relatively consistent across brands?  I need to pick some up for a couple different uses and the only size comparison I have here is Eagle claws in a 3.  They are small (which I need some of) but they are light wire and 'flexy' (which I want none of).

Owner size 2 works for all but the beefiest topwater baits...

I can't wait to see the first big brown trout with these new SK perch in its mouth.

 

I'll grab some 2, 3, and 4's.  I need some really small ones for a thing and or $4 why not.

Rigging up a special rods just for such an occassion.

btw. #4's are pretty big for bass baits.

This was kinda my question on sizes across different manufacturers.  The eagle claws I have here are sz 3 and are 1/4" on the note OD.  That's small for treble hooks, but maybe that's because they are a lighter wire than normal.  I just checked a KVD300 JB and the OD is a speck under 1/4" so that's probably right.  I have a couple hardbaits with bigger (choppo 110's for sure).  I don't think I have any with smaller, but I need the smaller ones for something a little different.

 

Also, thanks Monkey.  I was going to grab two magdrafts (shad and perch) to try out, but they weren't on sale.  So the perch one went away and the elite 300 pro phantom perch found its way into my cart.  Sugar daddy was good to me last year so we're going to go a little more muted version of it and see how that goes.

I got my TW order in.  I think eagle claw's sizes are off from others.  A #3 eagle claw split ring is right on 1/4" and a good size for treble hook replacements on crankbaits.  The next size bigger would also be okay.  I ordered SK tour grade in 2/3/4.  The smallest size 2 is already at 5/16" while the biggest is 3/8" OD.  I see what you mean about #4's being big for bass baits- these ones certainly are.  The eagle claws wouldn't be but I don't like their wire.  I wish everyone would just publish a size chart with physical measurements.

I have solved the problem, if there is a problem, using split rings, quit using them. I take off all split rings and use a snap. Three years ago I would argue that snaps are bad, don't use them. I don't know if I got lazy or smarter. In the 3 years, I have never had a problem using snaps and I throw a lot of crankbaits, a lot!!!

The Owner tear drop #2 split rings #4186-021 weigh the same as the original split rings on the Oneten, Oneten Jr., and the X-80.   .07g according to my scale.

im with you on that, but it doesn’t work for all of them. At least not for eagle claw. The eagle claw 3’s I have here are more 1’s on the chart. I think the chart matches the strike kings though. 

I've standardized on Owner Hyper Wire Split Rings - learn how the sizes & weights affect hard jerk baits and only buy once !

-thank you for the info you provided -- I just ordered several packs of the Owner Oval Split Rings #2/#3 and one pack of the Owner Teardrop #2 

--last summer was my first summer fishing and I lost several crankbaits (launched them and they just went sailing off into the distance never to be seen again) and when I reeled the line back in it was frayed off where the line was tied in to the split ring -- my guess is it was a combination of the line fraying on the edges of the split rings and old/worn fishing line (I was using yard sale rods/reels with old line on them) -- my hope is upgrading my gear will help me avoid this in the future (I have purchased a few new rods/reels/line and now the Oval/Teardrop split rings) -- Thank you
