A few relics from the past

Featured Replies

I recently got a few old reels to work on - I am pretty excited to get these in tip top shape!

I am sure some of you remember these reels?

Although I didn’t own any of those I remember thinking that Browning was the coolest looking reel back in the day. I just realized that Browning is a round reel but I still like it just not as cool looking as the low profile version that @bulldog1935 has posted photos of.

I fished 25 years on my BB-1NG, and another on my BB-25SW

btw @Eric 26 - these are the same shape as @JediAmoeba's BB-1N

@DaveT63 Shimano-built Lew's was BB-1L (and -LM - the first Lew's I bought for my dad)

I can go older on the 304

This is 4th model CAP, 1949

Nice. Before my time.😁

I've cleaned and lubed a few of those old Browning baitcasters for friends.

I've got a Shimano version of that Browning BB-1N, and had and sold the Scorpion 1001.  I also have a 304, but more for collecting sake rather than using.  All three cool reels!

@JediAmoeba I was going to edit my post with a PS but I’ll just start new and say I’ll agree with @DaveT63 in that all 3 are very cool looking reels and I for one hope you give a follow up as to how the “work” went on them with maybe a few pictures of them taken apart 🤔 @bulldog1935 after your post I realize that it’s the way he’s holding the reel that threw me for the loop 😬 but either way I still say it’s one gorgeous reel as was the BB-25SW.

That OG Scorpion is one of the best casters of all time imo.

Nice.  I never saw a baitcast reel much less touched one in my youth.  First reel was a Mitchell 300.  Being young and stupid I eventually got rid of it (like 20 years later).  My Scorpion 1001 4x4 SVS needs a good cleaning.  Purchased used and the drag started sticking the second time I took it out.

Years ago, I would go to flea markets and clearance sales and buy those Lew's speed spools and sell them immediately on eBay and make a buck or three.  Very popular with crankbait fisherman.  I think it was Lew's (correct me if I have the wrong manufacturer) that came out with a modern version with David Fritts' name on them.
