Well, to me, smoother and longer lasting gear sets is pretty much a priority, especially at the price they're selling these, it ain't no more $20 for a gear set like in the mid 2000 models. When it comes to weight, comfort, etc, they're so samey that there isn't enough of a difference. But yes, different brakes and swappable spools with Daiwa is also a big difference.

My Metanium Shallow spool edition is a phenomenal reel. I mean it was explicitly designed to easily throw 3/16 to 3/8. I throw 1/8 plus bait. That said these are Aluminum gears and to replace them w pinion is close to 80$

The reel I think is like 5.4 ounces. Have it on a GLX 892. Perfect match.

Totally agree with you. Not to insult anyone, we all have different budgets to work with, but I’ve never heard anyone ever complain about a reel that was too smooth (Zillion)

Everyones got their preferences with reels. Ive met and talked to several people that loved their Zillions. And even more that love extremely smooth reels.

Im just one of those people that it just doesnt feel right, it feels like a key part of the fishing experience isnt there. To me its like driving a muscle car with a automatic transmission.

Sure its faster, smoother experience, but theres a part missing. I like to feel every detail when im fishing, from what the lures doing on the bottom, the line, the way the rod feels when lifting it up to pop a bait up towards the surface, and the way the reel feels bringing it back.

Im not saying i dont like smooth reels, i like smooth reels, its the ones that are too smooth.

Theres just no feeling or resistance when reeling the lure back in, certain times i had to look down at the spool to make sure it was turning. I completely understand that most people love that though, but its not for everyone just because its for you or for me.

Or maybe it was just the SV spool that caused me to feel that way about my Zillion, i havent spent much time with the more expensive, refined, and smoother Shimanos just because the SLX MGL and SLX XT i have give me no reasons to upgrade further. And im not insulted by the budget comment, my starting budget was 15k.... So i dont think thats the reason i dont like the smoother higher end reels. I just realized for me theres nothing a $200+ reel could do that a reel that costs $50-150 cant...

Im out there to fish, if i had a $15 zebco and a bag of knockoff senkos id be a happy man, and if i could go back in time id just do that and have bought a C5 corvette with the money saved.

which Shimano reels do you have? I couldn’t help but notice you left the exact models of Shimano reels out while explicitly naming your Daiwa reels.

Does it really matter which Shimano I own, to prove that I’m wrong? This is forum to share opinions base on experiences no right or wrong. Same if someone started Shimano cast further than Daiwa we would get a lot of commend some on Shimano side some on Daiwa and of course those Abu and lews would jump in that their reel cast further or even better and cheaper (😔😔😔😔). Casting distance is not just about reel but Rod and technique is importance, same as smoothness, it is preference and feel of each individual. I can sit at home spin the handle of any reels and call them super smooth.

Shimano smooth? Yes but not to the point that can call buttery smooth like Daiwa (in real life fishing not on the couch). Shimano smooth but pronounced more of  connection of gear teeth crushing or even frame bearing. There might be nothing wrong but a lot translates into gears or bearing problem.

now to answer you that I’m not one of those that never own any of Shimano or Daiwa reels but still love to share comments.

Take it easy guy, I was wondering which reel or reels you had compared to your named Daiwa’s so I asked..

You didn’t say, I felt it was a fair question, that’s all. I used Daiwa TDX’s TDZ, and OG Zillions.. it was only the transition to the TWing that really made me change Manufacturer.

I can't even tell if you're being serious with this kind of comments. Complete insanity to say the least.

As for the Lews comment. If Daiwa and Shimano exists, and their reels can be had for the same price or cheaper (when purchased from Japan), what is the point of a Lews reel? What was the last decade this company has even innovated? As i see it, Lews existance serves only one purpose, and that's selling sub $150 fishing gear to normies/kids/teenagers. In other words, its a brand that survives on selling fishing rods and reels to somebody that doesn't know any better, or doesn't care what they're using. This is Lews for you, and this is why those who care about quality are mostly ignoring the brand, and this will never change in the future. All in all, its not an overlooked brand, but a pointless brand to most enthusiats.

When Lynn Reeves bought the Lews name and brought them back the headquarters was right down the road in Springfield.

One of the things they offered was a outstanding tournament rewards program and everybody was switching. You weren't going to catch any less fish with them and Mr. Shimano wasn't going to visit the Ozarks and hand out checks.

I still have some team lites that Look like they have been hit with a shotgun blast but still fish and cast fine. They also gave out sunshirts and hoodies and I still have a complete wardrobe.

You could always come on down and enter a few local derbies and  bring your superior equipment and prove it.
