Onboard battery charger location

Featured Replies

Hey guys, I have a 15-ft mid-90s sea-nymph. I have a Minn kota onboard battery charger I was going to hook up and the directions say to not put it above your batteries or adjacent to the fuel tank.

This boat is set up just like the old bass trackers with the 3-ft by 3-ft partially covered storage in the stern.

It seems the only real good spot to put this is back there. But it is kind of above the batteries, and pretty much adjacent to the fuel tank.

I'm just curious, for the guys with boats like this, where do you put these things?

Most onboard chargers are mounted near the top inside the transom surface. Mounting up high prevents the charger from flooding and is close to the batteries mounted in the stern storage area.

When I built Bass Trek I wanted the charger close to the fuse box which I'd placed mid-ships.

Red circle is around the hatch over the electrical compartment and the NOCO plug that lets me plug in the charger without having to open the compartment

Looking in the compartment at the charger.

The batteries themselves? Starting battery is in the stern near the motor; TM and 'house' batteries are up front near the TM and under the Sonar. Charging cables are zip-tied to the frame under the deck.

I think they mean directly above the batteries.  Lead acid batteries can emit gases like hydrogen  and others that are flammable and can cause corrosion.   Just be aware of this when you mount it and make sure the compartment is well ventilated.  I leave my battery compartment open slightly when I'm charging the batteries.

I have a similar setup in one boat. The charger is mounted to the lid. I open the lid when I charge. it vents the area, and the charger is above the tank and batteries.

Mine is mounted on the sidewall on the port side of the boat next to the gas tank and about a foot from my trolling motor battery in my Stratos. Thats the way it came so thats the way it will stay.

Mine are factory mounted interior on the transom above the batteries, as @WRB stated. They are kind of in a bad spot to access though. I replaced one of them this past winter and it was a pain in the rear to get at it.

Mine is in the rod locker.

TM batteries are in the also there just under that hood in front of the rode tube's pictured.

Those seem like ideal locations to access. Did the dealer put them there or did you relocate them?

Dealer installed as per the A-Jay Modification.

Love the battery weight low, center mass and on the keel/centerline.
