I receive a monthly edition of In-Fisherman and until the last couple days, I have not had a chance to read the whole May edition yet. Tucked near the back, to my surprise and disgust, is a 3 page article on ROCK BASS.

It is titled “On a roll with rock bass” and some poor soul is anonymously holding up one of those swimming turds.

I won’t get into the details of the entire article but the author claims they are “less than a bass but more than a panfish.” That part actually made me LOL. So, without further adieu, I give you…Ambloplites rupestris.

Poor Gim, having his worldview skewed by In Fisherman and their mandate to accept ALL species as legitimate targets.

My heart bleeds. 🤣

I haven’t read my In-Fisherman yet, so o haven’t read the article. Not sure about the whole “less than a bass but more than a panfish” either, but I’ll say this. Those things are a blast to catch. Small Rooster Tail, 2 lb test on an ultra light rod……good times!

Yea, unlike bluegill, they don't nip at your spinnerbait skirt, they hammer the whole thing and then you have to deal with reeling them in, laughing because the bait is almost as big as they are, unhooking and recasting only to have another smack it.  What a waste of two casts.

Looks like an interesting article. I like catching the occasional goggle-eye.

Wow!  I haven’t seen one of those in ages.

A paper magazine that is.  😆

I get warmouth and rock bass and tilapia sometimes at a couple different spots and I gotta say - they're fun when you can land em!

Better than lure stealing pike and mudfish encounters or super slimy catfish that try to hurt me and wreck my boat.

Was at the local Fleet Farm earlier this week - they had a whole aisle of paper magazines

In addition to In Fisherman, Bass Angler and Outdoor News - there was probably a good dozen other magazines devoted to fishing in the rack.

They’ll never be a micropterus!

Of course not - it's a panfish despite the common name

Just like this isn't a real sunfish, despite the common name.

Related down south is the Warmouth or a Goggle-Eye. Tasty and fun to catch on light tackle with beetle-spins and spinners. Good for kids to learn on our HOA ponds.

Good Fishing

I’ll admit we catch our fair share on St Clair and we have a bit of a machoistic release method.  If you lip them and give them a good spin in the air when you release them, they will spiral down slowly and if there is a musky or pike in that crystal clear water, you can watch them become a snack. If no toothy critters, they just look like a toddler who got off the merry go round too fast.

Just want to make sure he hasn't stopped taking his meds.

@Mlbassyaker I think he is still on cloud nine after catching that big smallie & leading the state to state contest for biggest bass. It's affecting his thought process.

Ha!! He beat me to it, I saw the article and immediately thought of someone on here.

I haven't read it yet, but my hope is that it goes into great detail into using a drop shot for them.

In the meantime feast yer eye's on the magnificence of this worthy quarry caught just last week on a week long camping trip

That was the first article I read in that In-Fisherman. Thank God for Rock Bass. They have saved many a day for me. ☺️

This is what I always thought a rock bass was.  Tackle eating nightmares.

I did fishing trips with a guy who loved eating fish. We’d keep a few nice rockies for the table. They were always good eating.

Yep - my mom always asked me to catch a few as she loved them...and any of eating size I catch goes into the basket/livewell.

lmao

Even though other responses might be a better here, this one wins. Marked as the solution.

He doesn't know he's not a real bass!

Rockies are the most aggressive little fish. They make me laugh by attacking lures as big as they are. And they happen to be delicious. I'm grateful for them.
