Father and twin boys brand new to fishing!

Featured Replies

Howdy!  Swam in to join a community resource where I can learn how to fish so I can teach my boys.

One of them came to me saying “daddy, take me fishing!”  I was immediately exhilarated and overwhelmed all at once - that he wanted to be outdoors n’ with his daddy fishin was an awesome moment but knowing nothing about fishing (was never shown or taken myself) missed that boat. So I’ve been attending YouTube and GPT University diligently. I’ve learned some good beginner stuff but man oh man, the fish just will not bite!  Hopefully soon before my boys get too frustrated n throw in the towel.

Anywho, glad to be here and I hope this is a lifelong journey that brings the fondest memories for us, and to all those who’ve come before me I hope they have and will continue.

Cheers!

Welcome! from Fl.

How old are the boys?

Hello and Welcome to Bass Resource ~

A-Jay

When my boys were young we targeted bluegill with worms and a bobber. They really enjoyed that. I think they liked the ice cream on the way home more. Welcome to the forum.

Start small.  Bluegill.  Trout ponds if you have them. Etc.

Welcome from Illinois. As previously mentioned start small for panfish specifically bluegills that are generally easier to catch with smaller hooks or smaller jig heads under a bobber using worms, or in my opinion wax worms are extremely effective. If you have a local fishing shop start by visiting them and explaining that your new to the sport or visit your closest Bass Pro Shop and bring the boys if you do go to BPS as they always have a giant aquarium that’s fun to check out.

Hello @SlamDiego from NorCal, welcome to Bass Resource and the Forums! As suggested above by fellow members of the Bass Resource, targeting panfish with worms and a bobber is a great way to start teaching your boys how to fish.  I’d suggest getting them each a relatively inexpensive rod and reel combo with a rubber casting plug so they can practice in anticipation of your next fishing trip.
Good fishing and be sure to take pictures of collective successes to share with your family and friends.

Howdy and welcome.

There is of course, worms and bobbers. There is another option though in the live bait category; Minnows. Not sure if that's common over in California. You use them the same as you would a worm, hook them, throw them out, and wait.

Don't forget to take needle nosed pliers to help with hook removal.

Knots that are suitable would be the Improved Clinch knot (fisherman's knot), the Palomar knot, and the Trilene knot, with the Improved Clinch being the old standby.

I normally use a size 1 or 2 aberdeen hook for panfish. It will work for minnows and for worms. Available at Walmart in the Ozark Trail brand for only a dollar.

As for lures targeting bass, or even panfish, I suggest starting with a beetle spin. They are very easy to use, inexpensive, and they generally will catch fish pretty good. The 1/8oz size will cover both. I usually use the 1/4oz size for bass, but I occasionally catch other varieties also. Black is the go to color around here 75% of the time.

Welcome to SoCal bass fishing. I have bass fished every lake in SoCal for 70 years and be glad to help you and sons. Let me know what lakes (San Diego area?) you plan plan to fish.
