mixing hunting and fishing?

okay, my thread title sucked.

my brother bought land in West Texas.  I am planning on visiting to shoot a hog for meat, maybe some other hooved creature.   help him build a concrete top table with an open fire pit to cook off of.   it would be more efficient if I could work my #1 love in as well.  gas dont come out of the ground by itself!

so I will trailer a pair of kayaks.   my own traveling rod and gun club.  hahah..  early December.   I have a lake near Tucson I want to hit out of nostalgia.  and then Elephant Butte lake.   maybe with the cheap TX fuel, hit Ivie?    it will be cold tho.   and we will be on kayaks without FFS.   worth the headache that time of year?  I know I can find bass here in CA in December but it will be in the high 40's-low 50's.    I remember west Texas cold as a witches...

like Zeros.    maybe just focus on the hunt huh?

You're asking us should you fish. C'mon man, of course go fishing too.😀

I'm skeptical that the air temperature is that cold in west Texas in December.  It's often not even that cold here in Minnesota.

I'd consider doing it as long as it was above freezing which seems very likely.

I love fishing as well as hunting.

Here in Iowa we have lots of big deer.

Sitting in a tree stand in November is one of the most peaceful things I’ve ever done. You’ll never find something more where you are “one with nature”.

With that said, it’s been 10 years since I’ve hunted. Work and a bad shoulder is t a good combo.

I need to get back at it or sell all my gear.

The problem is fishing is also great in late fall.

After you are done hunting ,drive south across the boarder with your kayak and fishing gear. Leave the finesse tackle at home and bring lots of extra line. Temps will not be below freezing and the bass will be hungry.

As a teenager, my uncle and I used to wade the upper Housatonic River in Connecticut in September for the early goose season. That time of year the river was usually very low, and warm. Stellar smallmouth fishing. We favored a couple of rocks to perch on an lay our shotguns on while we fished. When the geese came by we'd let em have it, retrieve the birds, and continue fishing. Some of the most fun I've ever had.

But yeah, why wouldn't you squeeze some fishing into your trip? Seems like a no brainer! Enjoy!

The answer to "should I squeeze in some fishing" is almost always yes. Exceptions being funerals and things that will make for angry spouses.

November is all about Deer season here.

Yes a great month to fish but brothers and cousins are expecting to see me at the cabin for the month....... it's a highlight of the year.

Give me the address and you’ll have myself and 6poundbass down there willing to harvest as many hogs as your brother would like! The best tasting pork I’ve ever had!

Fishing would be a bonus.

That sounds absolutely amazing.

Hunting and fishing is a yearly ritual. Turkey hunt till noon, have some lunch and then head back up the mountain for trout fishing.
Two passions in one day is great.

Greetings All,

I recommend you do both and fully enjoy yourself. Especially if you have the gear, then you simply dress to impress yourself and have a great time doing what you enjoy!

Cold simply means, having the layers you need to be warm and comfy.  It is year round angling adventures here in Southern AZ.

I go shooting when I can’t go fishing! The fall season is especially busy as things get busy at Labor Day! There is dove and quail hunting during that time of year. Later into November is time for larger harvests if you won the lottery of the draw. Of course the bass are always willing, you just have to find them….

Also as the temps chill, the AZ G&F bring in the trout stocking too. Yup, I suggest if you’re in for effort surf and turf and have a great time doing all of it.

I hope to try Elephant Butte someday in the near future. I’m having a good time taunting the AZ fish.

I look forward to hearing of your travels and adventures! Besides you’ve got to make sure to have all the ingredients to break in that outdoor cooking spot! Yum!

Be well, Cheers!

We do want to pause in AZ to check out the giant squirrels.   Not sure when that season is.  :)

When I lived in CA the opening day of dove season I'd go to the Colorado River and shoot in the morning and, using the dove livers, catch catfish in the afternoon.  Did that for a few years.
