Fishing Line Tape???

Featured Replies

Hey folks, You know that little piece of tape that comes with a spool of line? How can I get a roll of that? I don't recall ever seeing it for sale anywhere.

I've never seen it before and I try to keep using what comes on my spools as long as I can. I eventually switch to a rubber band when the tape loses it's stickyness.

lol. Just use painters or scotch tape, lol. That said, I will use that little white strip of tape until it loses its stickiness, 😂

In addition, I like the companies who add a slit to the spool 🧵 to secure  the line since it eliminates the need for tape or the beloved white sticker.

If the issue is keeping control of the line on the spool, there are elastic bands sold, 25 for less than $20, that work very well.  Search Amazon "fishing line spool keeper band."

Mylar/acrylic film tape - you'll find dozens of uses - beyond thin, easy to remove, never leaves a residue.

It's so tough, I use it for seizing knots on kayak trolley line, and the tape lasts as long as the double-braid sailcord.

I keep my line in the box that came with it.  I don’t need to tape it.

Beadalon 25 Piece Spool Tamer Set

This was one of those deals that as soon as I saw them, I thought,

"why didn’t I think of that" and then ordered 2 bags.

Between multiple bulk spools and various leader lines of assorted types,

these things are a bit of a game changer.

  Super convenient.

I have only been doing this for a few years but I buy Smartwool socks for myself and family for Christmas.  I keep the striped band they put on the socks for my filler spools and I use masking tape on the actual spool itself.

Buy Gaffers tape.  That stuff is the best multi tasker tape ever. Comes off with zero tackiness.

That split is fine if you're working with a baitcaster. If you're working with a spinning or spincasting reel, you need to spool from the end, and if that split happens to be on the end, it's annoying as heck.

Thanks for reminding me.  Just ordered more Gaffers tape.   That stuff sticks to carpet.

Avery Label dots 1/2”D work.

I use Kapton tape because I have it and it’s resistant so most fluid's, Mylar tape mentioned is good, not as strong or chemical resistance as Kapton.

I thank you all for the replies! Rubber bands it is.

It is amazing stuff for sure, sort of like a premium cloth duct tape with no gumminess.

Adding one more option here.  Amazon sells a very fine velcro tape for wrapping electronic cables.  I use this for wrapping line on spools - just need enough overlap for it to grab itself.

You can re-use the strip an infinite number of times - my travel sail bag always has a partial roll - you can wrap multipiece rods together with it and you'll find a gang of handy uses on a kayak, such as keeping your plastic stringer staged.

@WRB-2.0 - when I began using mylar/acrylic tape for seizing knots in bungee and sailcord (also wrapping ends to cut), I compared mylar (polyester) to kapton (polyamide).  Then, the only place to buy either was Grainger, and kapton was 3-times the cost of mylar.  That was 15 years ago, mylar is UV-resistant and waterproof (kapton isn't), and I've replaced worn trolley sailcord without first needing to replace mylar tape on my seized knots.

They also sell a slightly thicker version of polyester/acrylic tape for securing guides on surf rods (ends tipped with black mylar).    Wraps of acrylic glue on polyester film essentially becomes a composite (and you can easily remove it with no residue).

Pays off when you're on the water and everything works perfectly as designed.

Electrons are cheap - even a terrabyte to store them all isn't spendy these days.

How do these work?

Super easy.

It's just a fabric elastic band with an adjustable buckle

that has a hole for the bitter end of your line to poke through.

Just thread the end of the line through the hole in the buckle.

Attach the band around the spool and tighten or loosen if necessary.

No more unwinding, loose line on spool or tape use.

btw - I've purchase a couple of bags of these and they were $15 bucks then.

Seems we've kicked that up a bit now

Ya - just loosen it a bit and you don't even have to take it off to pull line out for leaders. I've got my 8# and 6# InvizX spools set up that way cause they're the leader material for my spinning rigs.

Gotta Say…

All good info and options for a thing I never gave a thought too

Didn't realize it was such a thing.

So true! I forgot about that. I get around that a number of ways.
1) position the spool in the same way as a bait caster. I remember seeing in my symetre’s manual it was not necessary to spool it coming the opposite way.
2) for my other reels, if I’m not willing to soool them like my symetre, I cover the slit with painters tape. There might be  a little “bump” or hiccup but it is minimal and won’t damage the line.
