Oval split rings??

Featured Replies

I’m curious if anyone switches out all of their line tie split rings to oval shaped ones? Do you think there is any change to the action of crankbaits and especially jerkbaits when switching from a stock split ring to an oval split ring? Less action? More action? About the same?

I’m considering buying some Owner oval split rings and putting them on lots of my crankbaits and jerkbaits.

It probably does change the action slightly but I’ve never compared them side by side. I like the ovals as my knot does not get stuck on the “split” portion of the ring.

Round gets changed to oval or teardrop on all my cranks/jerks.

Last jdm order I placed, I got like 20 packs of BKK oval split rings because they were so cheap.

That’s my reason for wanting to switch

I remove the split ring and just use a small egg snap made by VMC size 0.

Makes changing baits way easier, I have been meaning to put both on a scale and see the actual difference in weight, but if there is any difference in action, can't be much.

That’s a good enough reason for me. I don’t switch them all out, but I tend to gravitate towards cranks/jerkbaits that have them.

Like others, if I get crankbaits with round split rings, I swap them to ovals. While I’ve never watched them in a pool, I haven’t noticed a change in their action.

Another vote towards oval split rings for line ties. I use Owners, haven't noticed any difference in the action of baits. You couldn't pay me to use round split rings for line ties at this point.

What size would you recommend for a 110 sized jerkbait?

Mine too; I wish more lure makers would get away from the round ones.

I use a size 4 universally as the bend seems to match better with the size 3 round split rings to my eyes, but a size 3 would also be an ideal choice.

Last 3 years I went to using snaps, took off all the oval and rounds ring. I use the ones that look like as paper clip. Never had a problem with them.

Size 2 oval goes on the nose of all my 110's and similar-sized stick baits

I love when you post pics of your gear. I show them to my other half whenever I get that 'Don't you have enough' look from her.

To the OP

I remove almost all split ring ties from my hard baits and us a snap.

A note to those of you doing or considering doing that, don't forget to retie just as frequently as you would otherwise.

I use an oval split ring on the twist lock hook for weightless flukes. No need for a loop knot and gives it Freedom to dance.

That's nice.

I like when other anglers display my gear to their significant others.

Maybe you should also share some of the pictures of the fish these baits account for.

Might help your cause. large.7.05cleanbr.png

If you use a snap to connect it does not make any difference.
