Which line for bladed jig rods?

Featured Replies

I’ve throw a bladed jig about a dozen times in my life so relatively no experience with it. I had a nice gentleman give me several spools of line he no longer wanted. i have 3 I think Will work on my bladed jig set up. Not sure if best one.

20 Lb Seagar invizex

20 lb seagar abrazex

15 lb p line cx

Which would be y’all’s first choice on this?

If those were the only options.... 20lb Invizx but I prefer a lighter line usually 12 or 14lb. I have used Invizx, Sniper, R18 or Tatsu for bladed jigs with no issues.

Well there were a few other lines that came but I don’t know if they’d be great or not

10 lb p line cx

12 lb p line cx

14 lb trilene xl

I would go to 12lb p line cx. You can bump up to 15 lb if you are fishing laydowns or heavier cover. I fish mostly clear water so 12 lb is what I use the majority of the time.

You might want to have braid as a backup for grass.

Of all those choices, the 12 lb P-line. Maybe even the 10 depending on the cover. CX is pretty hefty for a given rating. My usual line for bladed jigs is 16# sunline mono but there are many ways to skin a cat on this one.

15# InvisX. The 20 might work ok with 1/2 oz and heavier, but it is more than I'd use. 12# ok for 3/8 oz in open water.

I’ve been bouncing back and forth between 15 and 20 tatsu. I worry that the 15 is a bit light for this thick Florida grass but I feel like 20 is overkill.

Personally I hate flouro. I like 40lb braid to 15-20lb mono leader. I fish around cover usually. @bowhunter63 mentioned 15lb, which is also the correct answer for everything 🤣

17lb tatsu fits this situation perfectly. Same drill for me, grass is primary cover.

for OP:

20 lb invisx is your best of the options you gave. The bait is pretty forgiving though, so anything 15-20lb will work just fine. Note that the 15lb p-line is probably the size of the 20lb flouro.

Of course, open water is a different deal and you could go a bit lighter like the 15lb mentioned above. I know in our grass I'd be constantly replacing 15lb line getting ragged out from hooksets and fish getting buried in grass.

If you are mostly smallie fishing and aren't in nasty cover, @A-Jay is the man on this topic. I don't think I've even seen a smallmouth in person, much less caught one.

For what it's worth, Brett Hite (y'know, the pro involved in arguably the best bladed jig) throws mostly 20lb flouro, and mostly 1/2 oz. The 3/8 is really a very shallow water bait.

Best Fluoro out there.

Not knowing the cover/situations you're going to be throwing it in, I'd probably lean towards the 15lb CX, even though I really don't like that line. IMO, 20lb is overkill for bladed jigs unless you're fishing around a lot of cover and you're going to lose casting distance. I typically run 15-17 on mine, usually a copolymer of some kind.
