Modifying quick connect drop shot weights for free rig

Featured Replies

Hello, I have a bunch of VMC tungsten quick connect drop shot weights that I want to use for free rig. Sometimes when I use fluro, the quick connect kinks the line and I break off. Has anyone rounded out the eye enough and used it on a free rig? Also thought about adding a split ring to it. Thanks!

I've never been able to round the eye without feeling like I've compromised the metal. I have used a split ring before. What I prefer is something like the Great Lakes finesse quick shot clip and leaving the line tie alone.

how well did the split ring work? I will try that out tomorrow. Does the quick clip go in place of the split ring?

Insert a small screwdriver in the opening and press it into the V and it will open it enough to slide. Try one as a test to see if it works for you. Otherwise just by the free rig weights from Seiberts Outdoors.

I use to do that then just bought some free rig weights. Opening the eye up does work, just make sure you don't put any burrs in the metal.

I just get the open-ring weights and tie them on for DS - the clips never hold properly for me.

If you do the split ring or a large ring weight not specifically designed for free rig, I've had a lot less line twist and better action by using stops and even a small bead to keep the large ring from hanging on the hook eye or bait during the cast and retrieve. If you're in a weedy environment, this is a much less effective method compared to rock/clean bottom. In the end, I've converted all my weights to proper free rig weights, but this got me through the transition.

There's a few different kind of these and with the ceramic insert, the weight slides fast!

This is the open clip style..so you can use any weight. These are very tiny BTW.

The quick clip goes on your line above your bait. Then you clip your DS weight to the clip.

Japan.

Perhaps eBay.

I have seen them in the US though...don't recall where.

I've found that split ring pliers are perfect to open up the line tie, just "pin" it through where the line goes through and pull on the weight and the triangular wedge part splits it open perfectly with no damage, pliers for larger rings work better.
