Spike it?

I have heretofore ignored spike it. But a new fishing buddy swears by it. He said that he’s had days where they weren’t biting and he dipped his lure in spike it and the bike turns on. Should I give it a try?

Yes. With spike it markers you also really don’t need many colors of soft plastics! They work awesome for making things look more natural like little chartreuse tips on jig trailers or a bit of orange on the throat of a little swimbait and I’ve even used black to make a weird color frog belly a black belly. Then I got a bright color I could see on top and a black belly which always works for a frog.

I also add a “back” to things with blue and or black to give it the laminate/two tone look which definitely makes bass think something is real in studies. A darker back and lighter belly hue can make for more bites.

These swimsuits are very effective on the tilapia eating bass south of the border.

Before I work my magic on them, they begin life as pearl white color.

The Spike It Markers are great . I also like the small plastic jar of Chartreuse color Spike It . I shake it up good , remove the cap and just barely drag the tip of a worm around in just the liquid in the lid to cover the last 1/8” of the worm tip. Many of the already factory dyed chartreuse worm tips extend too far up the worm for me so I apply this way for a more subtle touch.

** Caution : If using the Spike It liquid bottle or markers - dye your soft plastics at home in advance with a paper plate or a piece of foil underneath the soft plastic at the table. DO NOT USE IN YOUR BOAT !! If you spill the Spike It or the markers make contact with anything in your boat - it will stain it terribly and it’s darn near impossible to remove ! Dye your soft plastics in advance and keep Spike It far away from your boat interior (you will thank me later !)

The markers are fine. I like a jar of JJ's magic because I think the coverage is better . As Chris said, you want to try to avoid getting it on the carpet. If you do shaving cream and a broom will help.

I far prefer the markers over the bottle, after discovering that the bottles will swell in the heat - a lot.

I looked like the ghetto bomb squad taking that thing to the trash can, wrapped in a plastic bbq grill cover and welding gloves - I just knew it was going to pop open on me if I made one false step!!

I use the chartreuse and red markers. I'll take the chartreuse and run it down the length of a soft plastic giving it a more natural two-tone apperance.A JuneBug worm with that turquoise back created by the marker very effective .This spring I used red markers on pumpkin bladed jig trailers . White with that dirty red trailer were getting hit hard. I should have kept that a secret because lots of people are throwing it at that lake.

I use the zoom marker pen in chartreuse. Every now and then the bass around here just need a chartreuse tip on a worm. I think it’s because they are hyperfocused on bluegill and around here they have a yellow/tan tip of the tail. So a little chartreuse marker over a green pumpkin plastic makes it just right.

I bought a pack of the markers and never got to use them because they dried up in the pack?

I will not go fishing without chartreuse Spike It dip though.

I use JJs chartuese to dip the tail of the worm. Does it help? I caught plenty of bass without the JJs.

Spike-it markers are in the boat and allow me to quickly add color/accent to a variety of the soft plastics I throw. Off the water, I have Spike-it plastic bottles of the same color/scent to “reload” the markers by dipping the felt in the bottle dye. This and keeping all markers together in a small ziplock baggie in the boat is my solution to the problem @Bluebasser86 mentioned above.

I always have orange and chartreuse around. I like to color the belly of swim baits with them and use them on a underspin. Another one I like is a plain old sharpie marker. It will turn white plastics a cool purple color
