Featured Replies

hey guys i am buying a new baitcaster today, and was looking on the Bass Pro Shops website, i liked the Abu Garcia Revo, quantum accurist, and some others. i am looking to spend around $100. i want a low-profile reel. i'm open to suggestions, what do you guys reccomend? thanks

Go with the Revo, I've had mine for two weeks now and worked it like crazy. It casts like a dream and has a smooooth drag. What more could ask for?

Falcon

Just bought thr Revo SX.  Will try it out this week.

Try a Curado before you decide. Don't just spin the handle, borrow one and cast with it if you can.

well i went with the Quantum Accurist. it was a good price too, at only $80. i didn't want to spend $130 for the revo (you gotta factor in that i'm a typical 16 yr old with not that mcuh money as it is haha). also i got an Ugly Stik 6' Medium Action. so far i love it.

Well, I'm not sure why you asked for advice. So you bought an $80 reel and a $20 rod? Next time you might want to do a little more research on the Forum.

Good luck.

i have 2 $80 reels..both on $20 dollar rods....and my spinning reels are also on $20 rods...they work great...love em both!

the reason i asked for advice is because on the BPS site, it says you can get a Revo-S for $99. when i get to bass pro shop, they are asking $130, and that is too much for me. yes my reel might be $80 and my rod is 20, but it does the same thing a lot more expensive reel/rod combo does, and it helps me catch fish. why are you discriminating against me for buying an $80 reel and a $20 rod? i don't need that comment.

The Revo S is 100 bucks at every location.  I'm surprised your bass pro store would have it at 130, because the actual retail is 100.  In any case, Bass Pro matches prices so that shouldn't have been a problem.  Next time, print out the page of the item and bring it to bass pro they'll match their own online prices and any other major retailers' prices.

Sure you were looking at the SX rather than the S?

I find it very hard to believe that the Atlanta BPS had the S priced at $130.

The reel was probably the Revo SC, its basically the Revo S, but it has a magnetic brake system.

Hey guys give him a break!  The dude is only 16 with a limited income.   What will he gain with neg. remarks?  You guys remember when you were 16.  Were your pockets bulging with cash. I know mine weren't!  He could of made a mistake thinking the Revo S was $130.  I just bought the Revo SX close to that.

Lets all be glad he came to this website to ask questions.   Be suportive!

Hello Swim, Glad you got a new combo. I hope you have fun fishing with it and catch alot of fish.

Good Luck

The reason RW said this is that most of us here will agree that given the choice, the rod is the more important of the two.  The Ugly Stick will last you forever, but 'm not sure that is a good thing  ;)  In my experience, a good hookset is difficult and that's only a concern if you feel the bite, which isn't likely because of their almost total lack of sensitivity.  We are not trying to offend, only educate.  Welcome to the board.

According to this post you made, i'm sure a lot of the anglers here thought you had a budget of $100 for the reels you were looking at. You didn't mention that the budget was for rod/reel.

RW has never discriminated against any of the 9317 registered members on this forum, and has always offered his vast knowledge freely.

"Maybe you should be thinking about how you worded your request."

Ok well from a BassResource Staff and Writer, i would expect a better reply than just quote: "Well, I'm not sure why you asked for advice. So you bought an $80 reel and a $20 rod? Next time you might want to do a little more research on the Forum.

"So you bought an $80 reel and a $20 rod?" <<< if he isn't discriminating against me purchasing an $80 reel and a $20 rod, what's he doing then? he definatly isn't offering advice w/ that remark. yes, i'm new to this forum, obviously RW isn't, he should be more polite. don't think im getting my undies in a knot, because i'm not, i just wanna be able to post and get advice w/o sarcastic remarks.

Like Cephkiller said, they are not trying to offend, only educate.  Hope you keep posting.  You will get lots of good suggestions and a ton of useful information from these guys (I know I did).  Welcome to the forum.

Hey If you catch fish, who gives a rats *&* how much your rod or your reel costs. Good luck i'm sure you will land many fish with your new combo. If you wish to upgrade in the future just save a few bucks here and there.

Hey Swimz88,

I'm sure you'll like your Quantum. KVD uses them. I sugested the Revo because all I use is Abu Garcia, and have had no problems at all. I also have alot of friends with Quantum that are problem free.

Enjoy your new combo,

Falcon

Like ReelMech said.

RW is a respectable member of this Forum and the word " discrimination " is completely out of place.

You are at the end the one asking for advice...he gave to you and I agree with him.

When I was 16 I caught Bass on tackle that was pre/vintage, you wouldn't believe and worried about losing a daredevil spoon. But I still remember those times as "The Best".

What matters is your know how and presentation, there isn't a fish alive that can tell the grade of your tackle. Good luck and enjoy the learning curve. CB

good evening,

i hope your combo is working well for you.... i have two ugly sticks(light pro series), one 6' spinning rig with the mitchell 3ooeg and one 7' (1piece) with a garcia 5000, and i love 'em. ;D...i can afford more, however, these rods and reels have be around a long time.....beside they catch fish!!!!!! and i like they way they feel....remarks made by others don't amount to a hill of fire ants, ;), very bad taste..

since you are a young person with a long road in front of you, there is a great book available, called "what you think of me is none of my business"......just my 2 cents worth....

good luck,

bluebonnet2
