Jerk Bait question.

Featured Replies

What kind of rod reel and line should one use for throwning a suspended jerk bait like a pointer78sp

I'll use a 6'6" or 7' rod in med-med/hvy action depending on how accurate I need to be or how far I need to be casting.

I'm pretty set on my 6.4:1 reel.

I always use 10-14# fluoro line.

Now that's just my setup which works for me. You're probably going to get a few different answers which all work for that particular person. All that to say, experiment until you find which setup works best for you.

i like a medium action rod at about 6 1/2 and i like about 10 pound mono and I like a high speed reel

Specifically, Avid AVC66MF/ CH50MG

or Curado 200E7.

Currently, I'm using a 6'3" or a 6"6" medium light spinning rod and a US reel 240 Supercaster.  I'm using 14 lb Fireline crystal and a foot or two fluorocarbon leader.  The plan is to go for distance and cover the water.  I'm thinking about going to a 7' medium light rod or even a 7 1/2 to further increase range, but the trade off is slapping the water when you're jerking the bait down.  Further experiments will start next week.

The spinning gear makes it easier to fish in the wind - I think.  Once your jerkbait is down and out, the Fireline crystal works like a strike indicator.   Your bait is 80 to 90 feet away and 5 feet down and you will see the strike as your line moves way before you feel it

i throw a IMX 782 with a chronarch sf, 10lb flouro typically

I just purchased this exact rod for jerkbaits this year. Mine will be paired with a Conquest 51.

When using a baitcaster, I use my AC66MF w/ a Revo STX, 12 lb P-line CX.

However, I do find it more comfortable using my 6'6" BPS Extreme MH spinning rod w/ Stradic 2500, 10 lb P-line CX.

I only throw a few Pointer 78.  Most are 100 or bigger.  I use an Avid AVC62MXF, Daiwa Alphas Ito Ai, spooled up with 8# CXX.

for small jerkbaits like the pointer 78 I prefer a 6'6" medium action spinning rod (Loomis 782).  I am able to cast them farther with a spinning rod.  8# P-line Floroclear.

skeet reese jerkbait rod and a johnny morris reel 12 # floro.spro mcstick jerkbait.

I am not sure about the Pointer, but I use my back up crank bait rod for jerk baits.  It is a Berkley Amp 7' medium rod with a Pflueger Purist reel.  The line depends on the water and how deep I am fishing the jerk bait.  I also use my crank bait rod, a BPS Crankin' Stick with a BPS Extreme reel.

For really small jerkbaits, I will use a Abu Garcia Cardinal 7' medium spinning reel.  That reel is what I use for drop shots and shakey heads.  I have 8lbs Trilene Extra Tough line on it.
