Best all around line

Featured Replies

I am looking for some line to put on my new baitcaster amd want to know some of the best all around line. What size and brand. I mostly fish t rigged plastics, spinnerbaits, crankbaits, and topwater.

If I wanted to spool up ONE baitcaster for all those baits to be fished on the same rod, without heavy grass around, I'd likely go with something readily available, affordable, and strong.  P-Line CXX in 10 or 12lb.

Personally, I have braid on my baitcasters 100% of the time. When I need to use a different line type, I just tie on a long leader of whatever I want to use. Braid is nice if you're just learning to use a baitcaster too because its easier to pull out backlashes.

I tie my leaders on using an alberto knot because it casts and even goes on the spool with absolutely no issues at all.

Edit: I use spiderwire camo braid because it has hi and low vis sections (it adds depth perseption to your line watching) and for my flouro leaders, I use spiderwire flouro or I also just started using berkley triline ( it was on clearance at walmart for 5 dollars so I thought id try it and I was impressed). For Mono, you can't go wrong with Bass Pro Shops brand!

Do you fish in clear water or in thick cover like lilly pads and grass?

Just about everywhere. I use flouro leaders about 90% of the time. I use a 6 ft. Flouro leader and the fish don't see the line. Ill use mono for top water. Actually, I can only ever remember 1 or 2 times I haven't used a leader. As long as you tie the alberto knot right, its super reliable. I almost always snap the 20lb flouro before the knot will fail. The braid I have on now is 25lb test. I find that to be a good overall line weight. The leaders are where ill change line weights. Ill use anywhere from 8 to 20 lb leaders.

Yozuri ultrasoft in 10 or 12 lb.. :)

I agree with Nate.

Edit:

Except I use PowerPro braid.  The red is a lot easier to see than the green, but I don't like tying direct with the red.

As often as this question is asked, maybe it should be a sticky like Senkos. ::)

For mono: Trielene Big Game (Green) in 8-15#. Depending on the type of cover and water clarity. $7.99 a spool.

Braid: Suffix or Power Pro in whatever you want.

12lb CXX

Can't beat it.

I think you will like the P-Line CXX, too. A couple

of other suggestions if you want to experiment:

Yo-Zuri Hybird #12, Hybrid Ultra Soft and Seaguar

AbrazX.

8-)

Berkley® Trilene® Big Game Mean Green 15# :)

I vote for 12lb yozuri hybrid...

I tried cxx (6lb) and it did not compare to yozuri (6lb) at all, not sure if I got a bad batch or what but it broke to easily for me. Stripped it off and went back to yozuri after losing fish in a tourney.

I don't know how you guys stand to use that line.  Our guide at Guntersville filled my wife's reel with 15 lb. Big Game.  After two weeks on the reel and four trips, it's trash.

A couple of weeks ago I would have said Pline 12lb CXX, but after trying Suffix Siege I would go with it. Seems to be just as tough as CXX but casts better.

I have 12# YoZuri Hybrid or 15# CXX on all my baitcasters this year. With KVD Line and Lure they both work well. When I use my supply of YZ I will buy CXX to replace it.

I don't know how y'all can use CXX  ;)

Other than braid nothing stays on my reels for two weeks!

Yo Zuri 12lb Ultra Soft blows 12lb Suffix Siege out of the water.

Additionally, for some reason i've never really explored, since I stopped using Siege, the knot strength goes absolutely awful in very cold (39-45 degree) weather.

i'll recommend the green yz ultra soft in 10lb for an all-around line. i have not tried CXX yet.
