Global Moderator Bluebasser86 Posted March 4, 2011 Global Moderator Share Posted March 4, 2011 Any of you guys do the early season walleye fishing at Hillsdale? I'd like to catch a big one and it seems like Hillsdale is about the most consistent place to get a big one. I know most guys catch them on jerkbaits/minnowbaits early in the year at night but has anyone done it themselves? Thanks in advance for any help. Chris311
Pink Jig head with a lime green plastic jerk bait is the only thing I have caught them on at Hillsdale. Never at night tho!
Global Moderator Bluebasser86 Posted March 4, 2011 Global Moderator Share Posted March 4, 2011 I won't be fishing for them at night, I've just heard that's when the guys that do it fish for them sometimes. I've caught some out of there jigging for them but I've never tried early in the year for the big ones, just not sure how early I should be trying to go out there for the big ones? ATCman1218
Hey guys, I'm new to the forum and just recently moved to south Overland Park from the Missouri side. Thought I would see if I could get some advice on good fishing spots close to me. Unfortunately I don't have a boat so they have to be bank accesible spots. Thanks for any help! Global Moderator Bluebasser86 Posted March 9, 2011 Global Moderator Share Posted March 9, 2011 Not really any very good bank fishing spots around here. Best be is to go to Wal-Mart and pick up, or get online and download the FISH atlas. It is basically a map and description of a whole bunch of public fishing waters in Kansas. There is a bunch of public ponds in Johnson County but I've fished a bunch of them and I don't think some of them even have bass in them! Also make sure you get your Johnson County fishing permit, you need it to fish several of the listed bodies of water and they don't really give breaks if you're fishing without one. Getfished
A Johnson County fishing permit ? Is that right? You mean when you fish in Johnson County you not only have to have a state fishing license but a Johnson County fishing permit also? How much does that cost ? WOW !
Global Moderator Bluebasser86 Posted March 10, 2011 Global Moderator Share Posted March 10, 2011 Depends, if you live in Johnson County it cost 9 dollars I think, out of county is around 25 or so. Then you have to get a boat permit that's another 15 or so dollars in county or 30 out of county. It's the same thing with Wyandotte County, I just paid 100 dollars to get my county fishing permit, boat sticker, and trout permit. If you have more than one boat you want to take out there you have to buy another boat sticker. So if you have a bass boat for you to fish from and then a pontoon for your family you get stuck twice. ks cranker
Man I never heard of a Johnson County Fishing Lic. I take my little guy fishing at some of the local ponds by our house, ooops! Not sure what lakes require the Johnson County Lic other then Shawnee Mission and Kill Creek. Those two are run by the County and not KDWP... Also have to have a special tag for the boat at those two lakes... Global Moderator Bluebasser86 Posted March 10, 2011 Global Moderator Share Posted March 10, 2011 Most of the smaller ponds and lakes I don't think you need the permit but if there is a sign for Johnson County Parks around it I would make sure to have one. I know I go out to Mill Creek to fish for catfish sometimes and have seen park police riding bikes down the path. If you get a fish atlas it will tell you which ones you need to have the permit and which ones you don't I believe.

If I fish any of those lakes I'll make sure to get a permit before I go. That's pretty crazy that they make you have a county permit on top of your state permit! But that's Johnson county for you :
Chris311
Fished Lacynge Sat and Sun. Sat 3 fish and Sun got 2 fish, real slow going! Wind from NE was no help!
Global Moderator Bluebasser86 Posted March 14, 2011 Global Moderator Share Posted March 14, 2011 Went to La Cygne today and it was tough in the wind and snow but still got some good fish! First fish of the morning was a 4 or 5 pound wiper that about got my brand new jerkbait if I didn't get my drag loosened any faster. We caught a few more small ones before I stuck a good bass on the same jerkbait. She fought as hard as any bass I can ever remember catching and was leaking eggs when I took the picture. I wish you could see that it was snowing pretty hard in the picture. My scale needs new batteries but at 23 inches long and fat she's at least 6 probably closer to 7. Next good fish was another wiper almost the same as the first that I didn't take a picture off. After terrorizing some buffalo for a little while with jigging spoons we hit the same spot I caught my big bass. Got another fat one on the same jerkbait while my buddy was catching a dink on a shakeyhead. This one was in the 4-5 pound range. I held his for the pictures too for comparison. We were only averaging about a fish an hour but at least we made some of them count!
Roseypike
Beautiful fish Bluebasser! Good job (I assume) on the releases as well! My buddy and I fished Lacygne on Saturday and despite a bunch of tournament fishermen we did pretty well. Ended up with 12 largos, six whites and two wipers. My buddy only caught two of the bass, but they were 19" and 21" respectively. That's why I love Lacygne! I did get a 21" wiper so I can't complain. Most of the bass were 14-18" and we were fishing the "coldwater" part of the lake where water temps were ranging between 47 and 50 degrees. I'll be out there tomorrow and Wednesday either in a boat or wading various locales. Gotta love spring break!
Chris311
Nice fish Blue!! I have a score to settle with Lacygne, I got my arse kicked Sunday!

Getfished
Those are some great fish. I can't seem to get organized enough to get over there. I did make it over to Alma Fri. and fought the wind. We picked up 8 on sticks but no toads like yours.

KDWP website says they're in there but I couldn't catch any and my dad has fished it several times and says he can't remember ever catching any. It looks like it could be a good smallmouth lake. It does have some really healthy largemouth though!
Getfished
we always seem to get one in the cove by the dam on the deep side. We didn't get one this time though. The fish are definitely healthy there. I've been too busy to fish and it's driving me nuts.
Global Moderator Bluebasser86 Posted March 18, 2011 Global Moderator Share Posted March 18, 2011 Went to Killcreek for a couple hours before work today from 1pm to 3pm. Caught 14 bass and 1 crappie, nothing very big but still fun. Almost all of the bass were caught on pointers with a few on a spinnerbait. Had a few come off and missed a few also. By the dam and in front of the island seemed to be best. All my spinnerbait fish were from the small pond on the other side of the culvert on the south end.
