On Friday night, my wife had made plans on Saturday to visit her friend on the Eastern Shore, so she offered to take the kids to their swim meet in the morning to Noon. So I had the morning all to myself and was making a plan to figure out where to fish...I didn't feel like taking the boat out and, it dawned on me to hit up Widewater. I haven't been there since last year near the end of summer, and I had never done well there, other than a follow by a huge bass. I messaged @fishwizzard and he was on board to meet up at 7AM.

 

I got there around 6:50AM and walked from Angler's to the overflow structure. The water was calm, totally shaded, and looked so ripe for topwater. I threw the Rico toward the bluff wall and got hit on the third cast, it was a decent 1.5lber. 

 

When Fishwizzard showed up, he started working the same area with a jig and picked up two 1lb'ers in the same area. Then we started working the bank with no hits until the rock wall along the towpath side. The water was really clear, and we could see lots of structure and LMB in wolfpacks coming up and down the wall. I missed one on a Ned Rig, Fishwizzard followed up with a Rage tail (or Rage Craw) and got it. He picked up another 4 LMB, three of which were easily over 2lbs. I thought I had packed some GY Cowboys, but left them in another bag. I then switched to a Keitech on an underspin and missed a good one, and then nothing else for the rest of the morning. Fishing the C&O is always entertaining even if I'm not catching fish...I can listen in on the conversations of hikers along the trail and about 50% of them seem to be first time dates, 25% groups of girls gossiping about someone, and the other 25% are politics.

 

Later in the afternoon, I took my boys to the pool and met up with their friends. They wanted to have a playdate with them and they voted on going over to their neighbors house, so...I ended up with having another 2 hours to myself. Well, having been inspired by Fishwizzard's jig bite, I grabbed the Cowboys I've been wanting to try and headed over to Lake Whetstone. Third cast along the right side from the boathouse, I got slammed by a 3lb'er after just hopping it along the bank.

Saturday was my most productive day at the canal so far this year, the water was still down 5-6', but Widewater is big enough for it not to matter.  I really really need to get my kayak out there, if anyone wants to do a weekday trip, please let me know.

 

This is maybe the best of the ones I got that day;

 

 

My dog got me up at 630am today and I decided to make the most of it.  I hit the pond around 730am and got two right away on a BBZ Rat 40.  I am really loving that little guy, I can throw it on most any MH and up rod and it still seems to draw bigger bass.  As soon as the sun came up it started cooking so I did a quick lap with a swim jig, picking up one more bass, and got the heck out of the sun.  They were all in the 2-3lb class with this being the best one.

Alright, I've resisted going into swimbaits, but after seeing that BBZ Rat, I'm going to have to pick one one. The 40 brown rat is $20 at Amazon right now and I have a cart ready already for Prime Day.

Hey there. Can anyone give me an idea of what color worm I should be throwing? I fish mostly Centennial, Elkhorn, Cash Lake.

I mosty stick to Greens and Blue/Black/Purple colors for plastics and do well enough.  I do fish white/bright colors at Cash some times due to how stained the water is there. 

 

 

Went to Black Hills from 9-11AM with my dad and son. I just got the Spro BB1 40 Rat yesterday so it was the first thing I tied on. The water was about 4 ft higher than the average due to the rain yesterday, both boat ramp docks were under water so launching was pretty interesting. Started off on the first cove on the right and my dad picked up a decent 2lber on a Yamamoto Cowboy. I was throwing the rat and I saw a shadow follow it and paused it, then a dink swiped at it but didn't hook up. I was really cool seeing the rat coming at me, followed by the bass in pretty clear water. Then the wind started to really pick up so we went to the opposite side of the main lake to get protected by the wind. I threw the BBZ past an isolated piece of wood and got hit on the pause right on top of it. It was probably just over 1lb.

 

 

The BBZ might be my new favorite bait...the action and noise is just outstanding. I think it's gonna be killer at Lake Whetstone where there is a lot of good shallow shoreline under trees and isolated wood structure.

 

A couple things I noticed about the BBZ 40:

 

1) If I reeled it too fast, it would actually start rolling over.

2) If I reeled it too slow, it would be more like wakebait.

3) At a perfect slow reel, it was about 2-3 inches underwater with amazing action.

 

I think the way to work it is like #3, with pauses every few yards. I'm also thinking about using a barrel swivel mustad fastach clip to keep it from rolling.

Think I saw you guys out there. I was the one who asked for the screwdriver. Crazy how clear the lake stayed.

The 3 major inflow creeks to BH all have dykes and good amounts of grass that filter out the water pretty well...It's rare the 'main' lake areas dirty up.  There were couple seasons where construction runoff killed most of the grass and it stayed pretty stained but aside from that it's generally about as clear of a lake as you'll find even in heavy rains.

That's the only reason I'll ever fish it

New trolling motor pedal was rubbing the side of the tray which stopped spot lock from working. Got it fixed and was able to spot lock.

I really like all the sizes depending on the situation .  Most of mine have come on the 25 and 30 this year so far.  25 is basically swimming crank.

Can anyone recommend bodies of water in Salisbury?  Im heading there next weekend probably and want to fish around there a bit, will probably bring my kayak too if you know of any kayak access. Thx!

Hit Trapp pond. Awesome place. One of my favorite ponds and perfect for kayak 

Go on the DNR website, they list some good places there by county. It's mostly old mill ponds or the rivers. Johnson pond, Marshy Hope and the mouth of the river to the west are good, but a bit of a drive from Salisbury. Trapp Pond Park is good, but I'm pretty sure that's in DE.

fellow md anglers, I am in need of some new fishing spots. I live in Calvert. I mostly fish in St. Mary's lake. Last weekend I tried the potomac river north of smallwood but I am not equipped to be fishing in the heavy cover that's up there. Also rivers can be a rough ride in a kayak depending on conditions.

Is there a general idea of where you want to stay in, or are you willing to drive 2-3 hours? What do you want to target, LMB, SH, crappie, perch, anything? Some more details will probably help people help you. But if you're in a kayak, you get to go into the heavy cover where boats don't go and that's a huge advantage.
