Maryland's Who's who!

Hi. I live in Martinsburg. I am/was a member of Fishing Maryland...not sure why I can't post there anymore. Maybe a technical problem. That would be a great site for you to join for help too. My son I recently fished at the Rumsey bridge at Sheperdstown, WV. Caught one smallmouth and had three hooked and lost and missed three others. You can fish either side of river there. I saw some bluegills there too. We parked in the C & O Canal lot at bottom of bridge. Be careful going to shore. Not sure I can help much else. You can also go down the road along the towpath to a campground at the mouth of Antietam Creek. We haven't tried any other spots...but it looked like several places to shore fish. Good luck.

4evermarine0311 and wv, Welcome to THE boards!

4evermarine0311,

If I remember correctly, there's a smalll community pond behind the library that's set up for kids fishing only! That may be a good spot to get your little ones into fishing (and its close to home for ya!). With the river levels right now, dam 4 isn't real productive for me (fishing below the dam that is). There's a small pond is Sharpsburg that has bass and bluegills but it gets pounded pretty hard and they can be rather spookish. Greenbrier has some good fish in it as well and that's not too far from you either. Over in Middletown, there's a community pond there as well. There's also a pond on the Antietam battlefield that holds smallies but I'm not exactly sure where its located yet (it is on the visitors center side of the battlefield but that's all I can tell ya right now). Hope this helps ya some!

Popped into Middletown this evening for a while. Looks like the slop is starting to come back again. Wasn't terribly bad (yet) but you definitely had to pick your casting lanes. Only caught 2 on a lipless crank again. Talked to another angler there and from the way he was talking they treated the pond again for the algea so I'm surprised I caught those 2. Just figured I'd give you Frederick guys the heads up!

I've got a 10 foot jonboat and a 17-lb thrust electric trolling motor. Does anyone know if I could use that in the Potomac...either at Willaimsport or Sheperdstown. Seems like the current might be too strong. Also can someone recommend a battery and charger/maintainer combo for the same. Thanks. My son I fished  Sunday at Sheperdstown...caught nothing...maybe too hot. Thanks for any info advice on the boat and battery.

Hey wv,

The current at normal levels isn't that bad at Williamsport and Shepardstown but 17#'s sounds a little lighter than I would use. I have a 16' jon with a 43# on my boat and that gets me around fairly well under normal conditions. Since you only mentioned the trolling motor, I'm guessing that's all you have? No outboard. right? You could try putting in at Snyders Landing, the current isn't bad at all at the ramp and see how you do. Careful though going down around the bend! It gets shallow and swift and you may have to walk your boat up along the WV shore line to get back up around (if you're trolling motor only). Dargens Bend may be another option for you as well. There's a deeper water close to the ramp so you may do better there. Hope this helps!

basser - Thanks. You are correct no outboard. We've been looking on E-Bay a lot. All seem to be a little out of our reach. No big hurry.  I travel acroos bridge  in Williamsport on way to work...river seems to be a little low now. Thanks for your help. Any ideas on a battery? Thanks again. I'll apologize for typing now. :-[

No worries wv! The batteries I'm using right now are Wal Mart's Ever Start. I've had good results with mine. Just keep them charged up after you use them and they'll last 5-6 years easily!  :)  Hope this helps! If you have any questions, let me know!

The best place to take kids fishing is at the C&O canal at Williamsport. There are a lot of sunfish to catch and little to get hung in or on. Get some nightcrawlers at Wolf's and some bobbers and you are set.

I would not take that small boat and electric motor out on the river? Cunnigham Falls, Greenbrier and Big Pool are all great places to fish with a electric only boat. It is cooling down so there will be less people swimming to deal with.

The C&O is a decent place to take the kids. Actually been fishing it too from time to time. Its actually a sleeper place for bass! The best I've landed out of there this year is a 4 1/4lbr but I've seen bigger and have talked to others that have as well!

Mukin, to me, it depends on where you're putting in on the Potomac and what the levels are. If the levels are low, like they are now, then Snyders is a safe option for those with electric only. My boat is a 16' jon with a 43# trolling motor. When I had my outboard stolen, Williamsport and Snyders were about my only options for fishing the Potomac from the boat. I always carry a spare battery with me but I've only had to use it once (forgot to check the levels and they were a little higher than I anticipated them to be). There are others you could probably put in but they have deeper water and the bigger cruisers and jet skiiers don't make it safe! Just my 2 cents.

Thanks Munkin and again Basser on the boat advice. I have been working 6 days for about a month now with only being off on Sundays. I am today and tomorrow. We went up to Sleepy Creek Lake in WV last week. We had to take our old(1977) Ford truck back on gravel mountain roads for about 7 miles to get to lake. I got a little worried we wouldn't find our way back out and the lake being 200+ acres seemed a little big for us having only oars at this time. We came back home without fishing. :-[ I am having a hard time registering my boat in WV. Last it was registered was in Delaware by my grandfather was in 1980. The WV DMV says I need a bill of sale. I bought boat when I was 13 in 1968. I have no title, bill of sale, no registration and no place to get one. That is holding up the boat and motor process. We may just go to Sheperstown and stay within a feww yards or so from ramp. I've seen people paddling boats and kayaks there a lot. Sorry for the long post. Really enjoying this site. Especially now that I can log-in without using the temporary deal. I was member of "Fishing Maryland" website and must have been banned for some reason. Not sure why. Thanks again.

I have the same deal with a boat, I inherited it when my grandfather past away. The DNR of MD has it registered last to him so all I needed was a note from the executor of his estate.

Hey wv,

Let me know how you do putting in at Shepardstown. I've never put in there, I've alway put in at Snyders but have wanted to fish that stretch below the ramp. Looks like some decent water to fish there by the old bridge pilings.

Wow! Sleepy Creek is a place I haven't heard of or fished in many moons! LOL! I always had problems fishing there. I only remember one decent outing there and that was at night. Talk about a rough time navigating around under a new moon! Glad its electric only! LOL

Basser - My son and traveled to Sheperdstown this evening. We hand carried our small boat and put in water that way. Talked to a guy that had to make a "ramp" in the water to get his trailer in and out OK. Their is kinda a steep slpoe on the ramp itself and a bump coming out of wtaer before hitting the concrette ramp. He got OK. I have seen people have some trouble getting out but I guess they din't use a makeshift ramp like thius guy did. Hope this helps. As for use, we got boat in and started to paddle out when my son said water was running in boat :-[ Just a small hole but water was coing in a little too much for my liking so we came out without fishing any. Ma n ther said you can go upstream OK but downstream it is shallow past the railroad tressels. We were in about three feet of water around half way out in current. Wish I could report more, but I can't.

Hey wv,

Thanks for the heads up about the ramp!

Yeah, when I lived in Sharpsburg, I used to wade about a mile or so below the railroad bridges so I know how shallow it can get down there. I know there's a rather shallow spot down from Snyders Landing launch where there's ledges that run just about the whole way across. With where the levels are right now, you might not be able to make it over them. It's been such a LONG time since I've had the boat on the Potomac, it isn't even funny! Hopefully, weather cooperates and I'm able to get out this coming weekend!

Sorry to hear about the leak! That'll definitely put a damper on things! Hopefully its nothing major and you can get it fixed soon!

Talked to one of my fishing partners this evening and he told me the walleye are starting to really pick up on the action! Told me he lost a monster this evening!

Hi guys. I am living at Howard County, Maryland and a newbie fisherman. Well, I just moved here two months ago and getting to know the area. Currently, I am fishing at the centennial lake and Lake Elkhorn. I have been down to centennial lake twice, and fishing from the bank since I don't have a boat. But I haven't caught anything yet with Texas Rig, and spinning bait.

So I was fishing at centennial lake yesterday after work, since wife is not homehaha! I found this nice little spot not far from the boat rental office, and tied on the spinning bait. About 10 minutes after, I got a small bass, not even a lb but hey it is a bass. Now, here comes the funny part. Some random guy walked up to me asked for my fishing license, and said, Hey, this is my spot. Of course, I didn't show him my license then he become very hostile. I was about to fight! But when he saw me put down my fishing rod, he walked away Just a quick though! I know I just started to fish Maryland waters, is there a policy or rule for fishing at someone else's favorite spot?

Lee,

Keep throwin those spinnerbaits, it'll keep getting better!

Now, I could see if it was a private pond and someone came up to me and said that, I'd let the guy have the spot. But on public waters, first come, first serve. You had every right to fish that spot and the other guy had no right to demand you to leave or even ask you to see your license.  :-?

I went there this morning, and caught a few around the same area again. Largest I landed today is over 2 lb, I need to get myself a fishing partner so I can take some pictures.

I am a "Murland" shoreman. I fish the upper potomac Tuscarora down to just North of Fletcher's. I also fish Black Hill and Cloppers Lakes. I also do some lower potomac when I can get on the friends boat. I usually use soft plastics but am increasing my arsenal after some recent trips to BPS.

Some research shows reservoirs dont follow typical fall lake patterns because the coldest water gets drained. I checked the water temp on shore yesterday and it was 65 degrees. Does anyone know from previous years know when the fall bite is usually best at Black Hill?

Thanks of course. I am thinking about heading out to Dickerson after reading all of the above posts. I am sneaking out to get a few casts in for some lunch time smallies.

Welcome to THE boards Basser714!

Off the top of my head, I can't say for sure when the fall bite gets good at Black Hills. I'll have to check out my fishing log to see if I can help you out there.

thanks B89. My noon trip to the Potomac today was a failure. Better than sitting at the lunch table at work, naturally. There just arent a lot of prime smallie locations that I know of that i can reach on a quick lunch time trip but I will keep trying.

With the river levels being where they are right now, its tough to find productive areas (especially from shore) during a lunch time outing.

Don't feel too bad, like you said, at least you got out! I couldn't make it out today but one of the guys here at work managed 2 at Black Hills at lunch today on a spinnerbait.
