Sk Red Eye Shads Not Running Right (Help!)

Recommended Posts

OK...I have been crushing the fish lately on lipless cranks, catching open water schoolies as they are staging into their summer patterns down here.

Problem is I've got a small bonepile of red eye shads stacking up in the garage that just do not run right. I've replaced the hooks/tweaked the top eye/replaced the split ring at the top/etc...

Anyone have any tips/tricks for salvaging these baits or are they destined for the garbage can?

Watch them SK cranks. I had some Redeyes I left on the boat and due to heat of the sun, they swelled up.The Redeyes Swelled and the regular SK cranks split in the middle of the back.Had some Cotton Cordell lipless Baits get all deformed too.

what about the way they run isnt correct? Do they tumble, swirl, swing out wide to one side in particular? More information would allow members on here to more properly diagnose the issue at hand and possibly come to a conclusion/solution for you.

The main failure mode is the unit running kind of sideways (not upright) and biasing to the left/right on the retrieve. I've tried tuning the top ring to compensate and they still run sideways. I've even broken out the dremel tool and shaved down the parting line on the lip, hoping that a nice flat leading edge might help it run true. No luck.

it could be several things. it could be what airborne_angler said or it could have had something broken inside the lure. this is just a guess, but if the weights inside get banged around enough they could get stuck off center. try contacting strike king and if they don't reply you might be able to send them in and get a new one. good luck and i hope you find a solution.

Good luck with that. I've tried several times to e-mail them and they've never replied.

Possibly water getting inside throwing them out of whack ?

try using your dremel to cut open one good red eye and one broken one. compare the insides for anything strange. just another idea

KVD did a an interview and was asked this question. His reply and also that of strike king was that when glued together these lures sometimes get glue on the weights inside making them stick to one side of the lure. The lure then do not track true and kind of swim on the side. Strike king knows of this problem and said they are going to be fixing the problem. KVD suggestion was to smack them on the water a few times to break the weights free inside and if this does Not work then return them for new ones.

Good advice. I'll try that. I have one or two that do that.

I gave up on them. Xcalibur is alot higher quality, better hooks, better finish. The whole nine yards. Speaking of the hooks...SK's are terrible.

Thanks Dave! I will take my rubber mallet to the "bonepile" I have in the garage. If I can't get them to run true, I'll return them to Strike King. If they are shipping product with a known design flaw, then they should have no trouble taking my return.

I've noticed the same thing, Mike. I've got a handful of them that don't run true at all. At slow speeds it's no problem. Once you start to really burn them in though, they'll d**n near flip on the side. Gotta take my little mallet out and whack them a few times myself to see what happens.

No doubt! Aruko Shad is my favorite lipless by a good margin. However, there are times when I prefer the red eye shad. The red eye shad shimmies on the downfall and I think gets more hits when using a yo-yo retrieve.

That's been my biggest beef with them. When you give it a good rip they roll over. Never had much of a problem on a straight retrieve. I went through all the same things you did except shaving the lip. I even thought it was my knot at one point. If you have any in ghost colors look at the bb's and weight in the back. I had a few that the bb's and weghts were completely stuck in. I drilled a micro hole in it and freed them with a paperclip. Yes, I tried hammering on them first.

Aruckos huh? I'll have to give them a rip, pardon the pun.

OMG How have I missed those. I've never seen a lure that I wanted every single color in before. Ok, maybe not purple rain. What colors are working for you guys?

I recently ordered a pile of them from TW. The ones I ordered the most of: #08 Wild Shiner, #09 Clear Chartruese, and # 18 Chrome Shad.

I have tried many different lipless and the two tap SK’s have a rattle that gets Bass attention. But they just stop running true after a few cast. They do good right out the pack but run sideways real quick.  But these  lipless are so good at catching the fish hi can’t stop using them I’m just glad I am not the only one that has this issue with Strike King red eye lipless.  Not glad there’s an issue just glad that I am not doing something to cause the issue Strike king is.
