I apologize if this thread has already came up before. What is the best knot when using fluoro? I have always used a palomar knot but was reading that you should never use a palomar with fluoro because it will cut into itself. I have broke off fish on fluoro but always chalked it up to other reasons. What knot do you use for fluoro?

Berkley braid knot or San Diego Jam mostly.

Same here, except for on braided line. I can tie it with my eyes closed, and have never had a problem with breakoffs with any line, even Berkley Vanish! I'd say, find a knot that your comfortable with and learn to tie it flawlessly. I think that's more important than trying to find the "perfect" knot.

Agreed... The wetter you can keep the knot the better also IMO.

I have a different question - with the Palomar being not the best knot for fluoro, if you are drop-shotting with fluoro, what knot should be used for the hook?

Note, I'm also a big fan of Grigsby's noideawhatitscalled knot. It just flat out works and is so easy to tie.

I have used a palomar knot for years with fluorocarbon and never had a problem.

I use the improved clinch with no issues at all. If you are worried about slipping, after you tie your knot, hold the tag end of the line straight up, hold a lighter to it for about 5 seconds and you'll melt the tip into a nice little ball. This will grab if the knot slips!

If you look up north american fisherman, they do a series on knots called knot wars. This years winner was called the Homer Circle knot invented by Uncle Homer in that one Bass magazine...lol. It beat out the palomar, fishin fool, and the berkley braid to become the newest, strongest knot out there. It averaged 20 pound breaking strength on fifteen pound line. I have been using it this year and once you get the hang of it you'll love it!!!

Glad to see I'm not the only one that hasn't had any problems using the palomar. Been using it for years with fluro as well and have not had any issues.

Never thought I had problems with the Palomar when I was using it, then I started tying a San Diego Jam and can say it has held up much better for ME personally. I would recommend it to anyone as long as you're tying it right. The part I like best is if I tie it wrong it breaks with a snap of the hand.

So In doing this knot not sure if I done correctly but when I pull my tag it the knot slides up the line. The knot it self does feel strong however but wondering if you notice that before or nothing to worry about?

Nevermind I think. I just made the pop noise like the site speak of now I can't pull tag and have the knot slide up line.

But speaking off this knot, great for cranks?

The only knot I use for cranks...once you get the hang of it, you can tie on a crank in less than 3 seconds. I use this knot for all trebles and the polamar for all single hooks with the exception of spinnerbait buzzbait.
