I have a 7 ft St Croix Mojo Bass spinning rod that I am upgrading. I have read some good press on the "G. Loomis GL2 Jig and Worm Spinning Rod GL2 852S JWR" retailing for $195. I got some very good advice on this forum the last time I bought a rod and am very happy with the Fenwick I purchased then. What other options should I consider in the $200 price category for a spinning rod for great sensitivity for fishing worms and plastics? I'm typically a medium power/light action buyer fishing mostly in 5 to 25 ft water with rocky bottoms. Any advice on power/action for this kind of fishing?

Med or Med-Lite power depending on bait weight, Fast action, 7' length

Other options would be Shimano Crucial or for a bit more than 200 the Dobyns Champion series.

Most importantly try the rod, preferably with the reel you plan on using, personal comfort is not to be underrated.

I would check the st croix avid! I hated my loomis gl2 spinning rod. Fished with it 3 trips and sold it. Replaced it with a st croix les68mxf and couldn't be happier!!

I would also highly recommend the Avid. Not only are the St. Croix Avid's great rods but you can use their trade up program and get the retail price,(minus $10 a year) towards the Avid. In my book, a no-brainer.

Very interesting to see the strong recommendation for the Avid. I have a 7 ft baitcaster Avid teamed with a Cuarado 200E and it is my favorite baitcaster. Maybe I should stick with a winner? I'm still curious about competitors though.

and -- I see that the Crucials are on sale right now. I do love a discount. I also have a 6'6" Crucial baitcaster and I like it, but not as well as my Avid.

Yeah check out the site, it will tell you how to calculate your upgrade. It's very easy but if you don't understand there very nice people there and they walked me through what I needed to do. There upgrade program among other things is why I'll always have a St. Croix in my boat.

I'm very surprised no one's mentioned Powells yet. I like medium power and extra-fast action for the application you mention.

You dont need a receipt. I have even traded in rods I bought used. Check the St Croix website or call them. Its actually very easy to use their upgrade program.

Yeah, I've got a Powell endurance 6'-10" medium extra fast tip does great with 4" Senkos. No complaints from me. Let us know what you decide.

OK, decision made. I want the Avid MXF 6'8".....However, all things considered, the St Croix upgrade would end up costing me $140. Not bad considering the rod retails for $180. However, I see that there is a Tournament Legend on sale for $172.50 with free shipping. I assume the rod is better quality than the Avid. The split grip is a very slight downer for me but not enough to make me not buy it. At least it has cork on the split handle. So, that is the direction I'm going. Maybe I can sell my Mojo on ebay or Craigs List for $30 and I'd be even up with the same deal that St Croix's upgrade program offered.

You might want to take a look at the Falcon Cara. Also, at $230 a bit above your price range, Cabelas has the Dobyns dx763sf for sale. I haven't tried the Dobyns rods so I can't tell you how the perform but I have heard nothing but good things about them and have two casting models on the way, and at $100 off that's a pretty good deal.

Edit: my dx744 just came to the door as I was typing that, can't wait to try it out!

Be careful about buying a st croix though.

IMO, I find that their rods are overpowered, by a full step. So a medium, is more of a true med heavy.

Best to handle one in store.
