  1. Not in your price range unless you can find last year's model at Sierra Trading Post or the like but I love my Salomon XA Pro 3D Ultra. The ones without Gortex will be somewhat cheaper as well. They are trail runners, but easily sturdy enough for light to medium hiking. Especially with your new build, don't you want to speed it up a little? If you try a pair on, you will buy some; I almost guarantee it. I am on my third pair in 7 years. I still wear the other two; the sole's just too slick now.
  2. "Where were you when I was getting accosted by the rod snobs?" I was getting more experience. Don't get me wrong, I have a $300 Daiwa Ciello that I got for $100, and that thing is niiiiiiiice to fish, but I enjoy fishing with my 6 ft med shakespeare Platinum spinning rod just as much, and I'm not afraid to break it.
  3. A $200 rod can't substitute for experience. If you or I have been fishing the same Quantum for a few years and know exactly what that rod feels like when X happens, then we're better off than someone with a $500 rod and 3 hours fishing it. I't more or less a moot point on most things except bottom contact baits, and even then experience will outweigh gear quality. Do what works for you, and what you enjoy. I've never had a fish check my equipment before.
  4. To answer your question, I've used the regular sized SK Game Hawgs as topwater over the grass, and they do very well. The Ragetail Spacemonkey also does well, but has a little more agressive action if there's some chop or overly thick weeds. Weightless works well, but a light keel-weighted hook works better as it keeps the bait from spinning/turning over a little better and keeps it just down a little in the water.
  5. I've used Webroot for 5 years give or take on all my computers and have never had a problem. Also, their customer service (which is real people) is second to none.
  6. They're in the Potty up around DC, so I would imagine they're in the James now too...unless they've learned to fly...or skipped the James...
  7. I had a great time fishing below the dam for white bass during the summer. Small white spinners and flukes or spoons or white grubs for consistent action. You'll get some bonus other fish in there too. The Little Pigeon River through PF also fishes great for smallmouth for numbers. Find a bridge and work from there. I used Powerworm trick worms weightless on spinning gear with a gold aberdeen hook, texas rigged, weightless, just drifted and twitched with the current. ALot of fun and it's mostly pretty shallow so you can wde in an old pair of tennis shoes or sandals.
  8. Congrats on the new PB! This one'll be hard to beat, she's beautiful! The best advice I ever heard was: "Don't take any advice." But accept help when it comes your way.
  9. I just had Mike (Delaware Valley Tackle) do exactly that to my Cardiff 200, and the improvement was significant. great swimbait reel. It took me a few casts to get dialed back in to the reel actually. Now if I can just organize myselff enough to finish getting him started on the rod I want...
  10. Congratulations, I'm not even sure how we got in the tournament at 19-14 (IIRC). Add our AD disparaging our coach the day before the game and viola! Average team + distracted coach * lack of support from senior level "leadership" = embarrassment on national television.
  11. What's funny is I actually looked at the FAQ's for that! ;D Shaking head, unsurprised... :
  12. X2 on the trout magnet, sadly enough. A small, 1/32-1/64 oz rooster tail in the color "grasshopper" has worked for me in TN, CO, WY, VA, and KY. It just works everywhere on every species. If you need it to get deeper/farther, add split shot above it. It does everything, and smallies love it too.
  13. You can also try carolina rigging a small floating rapala minnow about 18 inches behind a 1/2-3/4 oz weight depending on how deep you're fishing. Reel it in 2-3 foot bursts and then pause for 10 seconds. They tend to get it on the rise, Does anyone know if Dalecarlia is open to fishing?
  14. You can get a casting bubble and use any flies a flyfisherman uses, that's one way to go. Small plastic worms (4 ") in natural colors sometimes work on the drift. Kind of depends on where and what you're going for: big browns will hit alot of the same things as bass; rainbows are a little more skittish.
  15. Look at your bottom composition whereever you are fishing. Crawfish tend to match that, with some variation by species. Setting crawfish traps (where legal) is another good way to get a look, and some tasty snacks .
  16. It is both: The upper Potomac, basically above the Woodrow Wilson Bridge is more rocky with a few grass beds. Below WWB, the lower Potty is alot of grass and mud with some rocks. More smallies in the upper, more largies in the lower. From WWB up to the fall line(ish), it's a good mix.
  17. Hot chicken soup with plenty of black pepper and Sriacha chile sauce in it. Clears the congestion, hydrates, replenishes electrolytes, gets you some protein and carbs, and...it's comforting.
  18. They're not. They said the same thing about my wife's work computer. A 10 minute call to her IT support when he came back in the office fixed the problem. I would not take anything to them, or allow them to touch anything I had just bought. You and I are every bit as skilled as they are (i.e. you/I can read instructions and/or use Google).
  19. Current verizon customers could get it on pre-sale first.
  20. I'm shipping two to DVT for cleaning/tuning. Any tips on how to package them for optimal safety?
  21. What're Mooselock Whistlers?
  22. What he siad. A clean break probably isn't the manufacturing process; it's more likely from handling issues be they the owners or while in shipping. That everyone thinks there's a huge problem with this or that rod goes back to an old restaurant saying: Give someone a good experience, they'll tell 10 people, screw up therir night, they'll tell 10,000.
  23. There's quite a few decent spinning reels under $100. I have six Shimano Saharas in varying weigths. Never had a problem with any.
  24. I have a pair of Danner hikers, teh all leather 3/4 ish top, that I've had for 13 years and 3 soles. They are absolute tanks. Not a featherweight hiker, but fantastic for packing any distance over any rough terrain. I also have pair of work/tactical boots from them that I've used situationally for about five years and they are of the same ilk.
