Thick Tree stumps cover
Early on , fish a floating jerkbait or other topwater.I would relish throwing a spinnerbait at that kind of cover.Banging a crankbait of the stumps is also a great strategy. If all else fails or when you discover a pattern, slow down and pitch that jig, tube,or finese worm.

Making a splash. Is it bad?
It depends on the mood of the bass.If they are easily spooked, then,of course, splash is bad.I've had mornings when they were so aggressive that I would throw the bait, make a ker-splash,and immediately have a violent strike.

If your boat's been sitting awhile ,get rid of the old gas and start over.Clean your carb and add the Stabil next time.

12-14 ft. jon is perfect.Get you some comfortable seats and a 30-40 lb. Minn-Kota and you're in business.

What comes around...goes around!
My daddy never was into bassin',but he liked to go catfishing. My experiences with Pop revolved around running trotlines for Mr. Whiskers. We had an old 14 ft jon and a 7.5 Johnson. We would motor to a sandbar set up camp and go set out our lines. For bait ,we'd seine for minnows, shad, orbream. We also used rotten chicken guts. We'd be up all night running our lines. It was a lot of fun.I miss my daddy. He's been gine for 3 years.

How do you choose what to get rid of.
As far as rods go,I'm way out of control.I'lltake 10-12 rods rigged with various baits I "think" I may need.I can see a tourney basser doing it,but I'm just a weekend warrior.

Fishing factors
Depending on the season, time of day is important for me.

Barometric pressure
I can't give you scientific data, but I've observed that a falling barometer(Usually before a storm) turns the fish on .A rising barometer does just the opposite.

smoking
I run a Yamaha too. While breaking it in ,I was told to go 50:1 and it smoked like a tar keel. After the break in period ,I'm now going with 100:1 ,and the smoking has all but disappeared.

Painted weight?
I've always wondered about that too.I just use the regular lead .I catch my share on 'em.

bright sunny days after cloudy days
That's always been a bad recipe for me.I would expect to find them tight to cover and not in a mood to bite. You'll have to flip jigs, tubes, etc. to get their attention. You may be working hard for a few bites, so you gotta make it count.

Post spawnin bass
I'm catching on flats that are close to deep water.Spinnerbaits, jerkbaits, prop baits, soft plastics, and crankbaits in Tenn. shad or Baby bass.Caught a 7 pounder Wed. on a white w/red tandem spinnerbait (willow-colorado.)

Where to start...reservoirs full to max
Never been close to that lake, but as a rule of thumb when the water rises-shallow and vice versa.I'm sure you already heard that one.

Big Bass
I catch all of my 10+ bass in the hottest part of the summer.I fish from 5:00 AM to9:00 AM .Usually catch them from 5:30 to 7:00 AM.I use big hard baits for the big boys and spinnerbaits and soft plastics after the sun gets up.I caught a12.2 on july 5,2004 at 6:35 and a 10.5 on july 6,2004 at 6:35.I mounted the 12.2 and released the 10.5 after taking a pic of her.

How do you choose what to get rid of.
I have a bag for baits that I have no confidence in.The baits that I have had success with go in my tacklebox.Trouble is,it's still like a suitcase.

Quick Reference for dummies!!
We were all beginners at one time.Although I've learned a lot by watching others and word of mouth,I think I have learned the most reading about it.I bet I've read several hundred issues of Bassmaster magazine,Bassin',Outdoor Life, and many others.I still read them because I want to learn more.I also read bassing sites on the net.I've been pouring over Bass Resource for over a year. It's an excellent source of info. There are many others too.Read, learn, and keep learning.

River vs. Lake for largemouths
I almost always fish lakes, but there is one exception.During the early fall, when our lakes are still so hot from summer I make float trips down a local river for what we call tighteye bass.I suspect they're Kentucky spotted bass. They don't get very big( around 3/4 of a pound),but I catch 40-50 on a good float.A white H & H spinnerbait fished on an ultra-light spinning rig,or even a Zebco 33 makes for some fine sport.I throw my H & H in slack areas near the shore targeting any kind of wood(downed or wahed down trees, limbs, snags, etc.)It's a fun alternative to the usual zooming up and down the lake searching for mr. largemouth.
