Bass do learn!!! they are smarter then you think Read this
Yea I'm sure they can learn too. Otherwise they wouldn't survive or adapt so well all over the nation. I have to agree with Catt that if bass remembered that much then we would never catch them. I believe that bass can turn off to a lure if they see alot of it but I also believe they have a goldfish type memory that doesn't hang with them if they don t see it for awhile. Plus like someone said earlier, THEY WILL EAT STICKS AND GRASS. lol silly bass There are always other factors that could explain why that lure is not getting bites....maybe the fish aren't in that area

bass intelligence revisited. where would YOU fish?
Evolution could have an effect over a long period of time but I don't think that pressure would really cause that. I'm definitely not a scientist so who really knows. What I do know is that fish choose the areas that they hold typically because of feeding opportunities. They will choose the areas that give them the best chance at success so where ever the food is. they are. Now if there is food in that secondary area then sure why not.

jig trailers
I have a simple way of doing things when it comes to a jig trailer that are based on the cover being attacked...caution... BR and its members are not responsible for any damaged or injuries that may occur from massive bass when tossing these lures. lol now on to the show. Super Chunk- heavy cover and/or muddy water- I want a bulky slow falling lure when dealing with these conditions. I want a jig heavy enough to get in the cover but light enough to give the bass a second to react. I use the bait more as a drop lure. Drop it in a hole, shake it and pull it out...repeat. Twin Tail Grub-sparse to open cover- The tails give a vibration that helps the fish locate my lure. The fish are able to move around so they will feel its presence and move to it. This trailer is great for lift and drop retrieves and swimming retrieves Well thats it...haha simple yes but effective.

Casting Accuracy Spin VS Baitcst
hey man, just practice. I would rather have a spinning rod when using a light lure over a baitcaster. Don't start out with a light action rod. My experiences with one has been devastating. lol They just take a little while to get used to the flex. Just take your spin gear out there and have a good time with it. It won't be long before it becomes second nature. Good luck

Bama spot

Bluegills for bass... what is the preferred size? Fishing techniques?
Dude, Awesome Bass!!! and those baits are incredibly realistic.

WHEN THE BITE IS HOT
guess it all depends for me. If my buddies or GF is going with me, I'll probably sit on that hole until the cows come home. It does my heart good to see them get into it. If I'm studying for a tournament or looking to learn something new, I'll spend a few minutes to get dailed in or focused better but then I start my search for the big uns. I enjoy catching a few hawgs more than a hundred dinks but have no problem taking a few notes on what all the bass are doing.

alabama.
Troy University! I grew up on the Alabama River but I've been blessed with the chance to catch some incredible fish in most every major lake in Alabama. We have it good don't we!
-
Didn't quite get what you wanted?
yea it doesn't happen much but when it happens...man does it happen. I've caught 4 drums over 10 lbs this... I mean last year. I also fished a collegiate bass tournament where I was able to come up with an awesome crappie pattern. 8-)

Hey guys, Do yall know of any seminars and/or lure shows that are in the Alabama, Georgia and Northern Florida Area? Mottfia

Wildlife encounters
When I'm wading creeks with the guys there is not a day that we don't encounter a few snakes. They are incredible common. We have ran across one gator while wading but when fishing the river we see EVERYTHING. Gators and snakes are everywhere once you get in the backwater. But thats a typical river system to me. Now I've got to say that I rarely see anything like that on major lakes, exception being Eufaula.

Placed in my tourny today.

When fishing a new lake
I've been doing alot of this lately and I agree with the guys on this. I will try to duplicate a pattern that works in my section of the woods. Because I'm normally fishing a collegiate tournament the next day I fish much faster than I normally would in order to see more of the lake and see if there are any aggressive fish in an area. Before I see the lake I try to have studied up on it with a topo map and google earth. Awesome software when its up to date!! and I also try to have 3 general patterns to try to run before I hit the water. I think it makes me more focused but thats just a thing for me. When I run out of ideas I normally pick an area that looks nice and run it with a jig and spinnerbait.

How far south?
RW is right. Florence, Al is the farthest south that I've heard of (rumor has it that a few are in the coosa river but I won't be sold until I find one) . But they are some Awesome fish. I fished a collegiate tournament at Lake Wilson last year and had the pleasure of catching my first smallmouth. One of the other teams caught a 5 pounder and I watched another team catch a 4. If you get a chance you should visit Florence. Great town , excellent fishing.

Buck Perry Books
hey Guys, I was reading where some of the top deep water guys like Catt were suggesting to read Mr. "Buck" Perry's books. Does anyone know where I can find them?

How long do you stay?
Confidence in an area is a must if I am to stay in an area for long but the mood of the fish is the deciding factor. If the fish are aggressive then i can fish an area relatively fast and move to the next. To the opposite of that, if the fish are inactive then I am move prone to find an area that I know has a good concentration of fish and stick with it. The idea is to put the lure into as many fishs' stike zones as possible. since on bad days the fish won't move far for a lure, finding an area with a large concentration of fish and fishing slower will do better in general than jumping to places with fish that have lower bass populations. The best way that I go about studying how active the fish will be is by studying weather and the seasonal pattern. I hear that the barometer and moon phases are good indicators but I haven't applied it yet. I'm sure that there are great articles on this site that will help you learn more about fish moods ;D

today's fishing trip on the river
hey guys, I went out on a rvier system today and did pretty good. The current was rolling strong and we were catching spots from 2 to 8 ft deep in eddie pockets and push lines. I caught around twenty two pounders through out the day. They were in schools of 5 or 6 so when you found one you found others. They would hit just about anything but I scored best on a 1/2 oz spinnerbait being slow rolled as slow as possible. I scored a 4 pound spot two days ago by doing the same thing so I take that technique as solid for this time of year. Also two largemouths were caught flipping a jig, biggest being 3.5 pounds but I never got anything defined except for current and wood. I hope this helps anyone that is fishing a river system anytime this winter. cya guys

Logan Martin
Hey Thad, I'm glad to hear that yall are getting into the college tournaments. Are yall gonna be in the Southern Collegiate Series next semester? I'm with Troy University and we'll be returning for our second round at this series. Look out for ole Kyle. That guy can fish with the best of em. I'm gonna be a little scared when they finally move a tournament over there to his part of Georgia. These tournaments are an amazing learning experience that it gives you the chance to see how those top teams work out on the water. I hope to meet ya in January. Justin Mott

Gantt Lake Tips
Oh yes you'll see plenty of us. Though I don't think that we'll have boat docks as a primary target but with the size of this place we should be able to hear each other whisper.

Any central Alabama folks out there?
Hey natanestaban, I can't say that I've been to Jordan in awhile but it can say that teh fish are really turning on strong to fall patterns. I've been have some good luck fishing shallow flats in creeks. Normally about midways back but it depends on the size of the creek. I would say that a swimming jig would be a good start if you run into to grass. If its windy and possibly overcast then you could throw a spinnerbait. The best thing I can say is keeping moving until you find them. Try a number of different things that resemble a shad ( crankbait also good right now) and get after it. Good luck man. I hope that I could be of help to you.

Gantt Lake Tips
Haha sup Dave. Check with me in a week and I may have some useful stuff from a local biologist on the area. Other than that you should focus on using a pink eyed hoolapopper on cyprus trees in the middle of the river...normally I'm joking when I say that but in this lake you really could lol.
