Our Latest Foster Dog ~
Sometimes it's pretty hard not to. As I've mentioned before, when we started, we 'kept' one here & there. Didn't take long to realize that there was definitely a 'limit' and we may have surpassed it once or twice. Since then we've come to learn to love the process just as much (or More perhaps) than the dogs themselves. At least that's what we keep telling ourselves . . . Either way, this little Husky is turning out to be a real sweetheart and seems to be working overtime to steal our hearts. This makes it both easy & hard to place her . . . . https://youtu.be/MmxsG3u1IlM A-Jay

August Dog Days Of Summer : Current Favorite Bass Lures ?
Dog Days of Summer here, in particular August, are not always very "dog"; and I'm good with that. This morning's in the low 50's with a high today that might not make 70. Very refreshing. If & when I can find bait & fish shallow, baits include a lot topwater walkers & poppers, and A-Rig and a big spinnerbait. Later this week it may 'warm up', but I'll still be throwing the same deal. Lure made to twist line?
Paying the line out with nothing on the end, either behind a boat or across the lawn, and then reeling it back in, Will remove line twist. The more you let out, the better. I do it all the time. Just try it. All These guys are not going to steer you wrong. A-Jay

Our Latest Foster Dog ~
Cool ~ No - Timing's not right for us. While we've certainly had our share of "Foster Failures" we had to make a 'plan' a while ago as far as what we are going to do & most importantly, when. With the recent passing of Teddy and our Two Big malamutes being 10 years old, once they cross the bridge, the outside kennel will be empty. First time ever and we're not looking forward to that. Plan is to switch breeds then (puppies) to something with 'less tonnage'. Easier to handle, especially that first two years. Tough call for sure. Time will tell. Until then we'll foster as the opportunities are presented. A-Jay

BROWN BASS TOOLS ~ Questions & Answers
Preparing for the Fall Run ~ Early After the rather abundant, Pre-Spawn Big Brown Bass action here is in the rear view mirror, the "Fall Bite" immediately becomes my next favorite time frame to expect big things. It's another time when plus size fish come shallow again and are looking to eat - rather voraciously I might add. None of that is a surprise really and just about every basshead on the planet, knows it. However, what has been a pretty big surprise to me, especially the past couple of seasons, is just how 'early' on our calendar this can happen; but please allow me to back up a bit. For a long time, years in fact, my impression & expectation of 'the fall bite' revolved around cooler air & water temperatures much more than the date. Well in advance of even considering vacating my hunt for big brown bass in the deeper haunts, and well before I secured the drop shot & spybait rigs, I was eternally waiting for that first 'bite' of cold air or those first few 'cold nights'. Traditional thinking says this is what is supposed to trigger the bigger fish to move 'shallower' and get them feeding. And clearly there is and probably will always be quite a bit for 'truth' to that. The Length of day may also be a will participant. Something we may all agree with is that not all the bass in the lake are doing the same thing at the same time. So is there a chance, that some fish big fish move in shallow and feed Before the frost is on the pumpkin ? I'm here to say, Absolutely. So while for years I was out deep, pretty much getting my lunch handed to me in mid to late August, there were some real brutes laugh it up some pretty skinny water, and I was none the wiser. Fortunately, during a mid-day, super high sun, lunch time RECON mission, I happen to get lucky, real lucky. I was throwing a spinnerbait around way up on the inside, stuff I would have thought was far too skinny to hold fish, at least not the type I was looking for and not at that time of day. As my bait passed by this isolated wood in less that 4 ft of very clear water on a huge sand flat, a 5 lb brown bass shot out and blasted it. To say I was surprised is quite an understatement - seemed a kin to getting a bass from Wal-Mart parking lot. It was that 'weird' to me. This is that fish catch . . . https://youtu.be/EkCJNqul4lI I thought, "this fish must be sick or something" Nope, aside from the Strike King Burner hanging out of her face, she was fat & sassy and seemed totally healthy. Had to be an anomaly. Either way, I poked my face in there at sunrise my next trip and found the bass already in there slurping up every 4-5 inch yellow perch they could find, and there were schools & schools of them. So Good. Accordingly, I started looking insider earlier & earlier each season. And while no two seasons are the same, it appears that even the first week of August is NOT too soon, up here anyway. I've been capitalizing on this late summer deal ever since. Besides some of my best topwater catches, my PB Brown Bass came that very next year off that same flat; also on a spinnerbait. So long story short, if you have an area(s), that come to life a later in the season, it might not be totally crazy to check them out a little sooner. I'll be spending this raining weekend in the Pro-V Bass ensuring all my Gear is Good To Go. That's my story and I'm sticking to it. Fish Hard A-Jay

Our Latest Foster Dog ~
BB's is a year old Siberian Husky who's coming from a fairly troubling situation. She has the typical high energy Husky temperament and after a bit of focused socialization / training she'll be ready to go to her forever home. Picked her up yesterday and she went on her first "in the harness" run today. Decent start I'd say. https://youtu.be/p1AZdd09yHA A-Jay

How Old?
My PB Brown Bass came in Sept 2017 ~ I was 58. I got on the water at daylight and made it up to my ‘spot’ just before sunrise. It was a calm & unseasonably warm morning with air temps in the high 50’s and water temps in the low 60’s. Started out working a flat that has an inlet dumping out onto it. The water was back to its usual clarity (super clear) and the bass were already chasing bait when I arrived. With plenty of neck turning swirls all over the place, expectations were high . . . . . . . . My first two presentations were both topwater (a walking bait & a twin fluke rig). I had the twin GoPro’s mounted and at the ready, hoping to capture some early morning topwater action. I was only casting into 4 or 5 feet, so it’s not like they weren’t seeing it. Well, these baits drew zero interest. I was unhappy as I fully expected one or both baits to get hammered. Didn’t happen. After about 20 minutes of unsuccessfully trying to force feed the bass, a little breeze came up along with some cloud cover. By the looks of the sky the clouds weren’t going to last too long. So I aborted the topwater and headed up wind of what I though was the prime area. Busted out a spinnerbait & went to work. I got a strike right away but I blew the hookset and was left with a torn trailer. Replaced and went back to launching that bait for all I was worth. After about 10 minutes, I had a nice rhythm going; bomb a cast, burning back – bomb a cast, burning it back – you get the idea . . . . .. Then, made a cast, turned the Calcutta 200D handle about 5 turns and the bait just stopped. I put the boots to her and there was that familiar feeling – the one where I kind of know it's a big fish but so often in these waters, the ‘big fish’ have big teeth. So I say out loud “hope it’s a bass” – but not actually believing that the chances are very good that it is. It’s pulling pretty good but it doesn’t jump – not helping my cause. Pulls some drag – then I get a glimpse – Holy Smokes, it looks like a bass – Holy Smokes – It Is A Bass and it’s BIG ! Turned on the Gopro’s in time to catch the end of the battle & the net job which went pretty easily thankfully. Once I lifted her up out of the drink and laid the net bag on the deck – I was Blown Away – This bass was Crazy FAT ! Put her right in the live well, took a minute to compose myself (insert go completely nuts off camera) and then weighed her – came up 7.29 lbs - twice. Totally Insane. Oh and blind in one eye. I didn’t measure her length or get a girth (I wished I had) before I released her. But she was stressing in the live well and I definitely wanted this one to swim away. SO as quickly as she came – she was free . . .I may never catch a heavier smallie - but I'm good with that. Got my PB Green Bass south of the border while fishing Lake Baccarac in Mexico. I was 54 years old then. She came on the third day of the trip late in the afternoon. While fishing a ¾ ounce SK Redeye Shad (Sexy Shad) in front of some bushes on a “nothing” bank, I hooked what felt like a freight train. This mutant immediately ran for the bushes, but I managed to turn her. Next she went way under the boat attempting to get free, I managed to foil that one. Then in a last ditch effort she went straight for the trolling motor. Fortunately my 20 lb Big Game hung tough and after a few tense moments, she was still pinned and in the net. Once our guide Manual placed the net bag onto the deck, with my heart just about pounding right out of my chest, the bait fell from the fish’s mouth. Wow, lucky for sure and quite a rush. This fish weighed 11lbs 11 ounces was caught on Nov 11th (11-11) ~ now that's going to be a hard one to forget. After getting a weight, photos and successful release, I had to take several minutes to collect myself – I was pretty giddy and had a bit of the shaky hands thing going on. It was like dream – the good kind. Fish Hard A-Jay

Alabama Rig / A-Rigs in Summer
Yes - An A-Rig is a summer / warm weather deal for me while hunting stout brown bass. Took me a couple of years to figure out how, where & when but I will start fishing it seriously in a week or so. And I can usually count on this deal to be a viable player until the bigger brown bass move back out of the shallower water. https://youtu.be/6Ds4Z22ywnY?t=625 Fish Hard A-Jay

Spot stealing
OK Part of this for me starts with Lake Selection ~ I am fortunate enough that within 60-90 minutes there's quite a variety of Lake Menderchucks that all have a decent population of brown bass. Seems lakes close to the major highway and that have super easy and multiple access locations are often the busiest, regardless of the fishing. I recognized this right away and have concentrated my efforts on 'other lakes'. Being slightly off the beaten path has paid off. I still get poached a few times a season, but not when the big bite is on. Because that's when it's freaking windy, boating conditions are often sketchy at best & it's wicked Cold. The great equalized. I'm good with that. Fish Hard A-Jay

Spot stealing
I hear ya ~ I'm in the same boat as far as locating structure, cover, bait & eventually fish. No one does it for me and I do not fish anyone else's deal - ever. Why folks do it, I can't say as it's just not my style. Either way, I certainly can not control what these humans do. I can control my own experience however and I have no trouble going to whatever lengths I need to, to totally take them out of my own fishing equation. Super early & late season trips and being On & off the water early, really helps. And then there's Night Ops . . . . . . Fish Hard A-Jay
