Leak In My Jon Boat
Hey AC I Got Er Done. It turned in to a nightmare though. I mixed it all at once and I got a nice first coat on. Then I covered the container till it tack up. When I went to put on the second coat it was all set up in the container. So I could only put a second coat on the major areas of the leaks. Thank God it on the bottom of the boat. I also came back later to look at it and I have drips on the bow. It does have a nice look from far away and the stuff is cool. Now I want to paint it and I got the spray paint. I have a few areas that I driped the epoxy on to the sides. Will the primer stick to the epoxy so I can finish painting the sides? I am sure it won't leak no more so it served it's purpose. Next time I do it I will only mix one part at a time Sorry you had troubles man, but what I highlighted in red was your biggest mistake....in our PM's I wrote that you only mix what you can apply and as indicated in the instructions as well...no problem tho it doesnt look bad, and nobody sees the bottom.

Leak In My Jon Boat
Looks good, with 2 quarts you shoud have enuff to do the bottom nicely. Make sure you wash that hull down and then if you can wipe it down with acetone and your ready for step #2

Leak In My Jon Boat
your call there, I brought it down to bare metal, Gerry told me the same, rough up the old paint and make sure theres nothing lingering about. When I asked him about stripping the boat he informed me that it would be best, but you can do it your way. I didnt mind spending the little extra time to do the job right the first time.

Leak In My Jon Boat
I'd consider bringing it down to bare metal, the rougher the surface the better the epoxy will stick. Thats what Gerry told me when I started on mine, roughing up the paint is fine but getting rid of it all is much better, it's like you'll be working from a clean slate.

Leak In My Jon Boat
The way I did it was outside only, you wont need to go inside. As far as paint I went with Krylons Camo ODG, I did use a self etching primer first. For the bottom I added ODG color from Gerry, and I do beleive they have brown. I bought 2 quart kits with color and it ran me about $50 shipped, give or take a couple bux....if I was to doit again I'd order a gallon. If you have any questions or concerns on appyling this stuff feel free. My JB is only 10ft so she's not as stable as some of the bigger boys, I'd like to go bigger but that'll have to wait.

Leak In My Jon Boat
It's designed for the bottom, Im sure you can do the inside but you wont need to, as far as color goes you mix it into 1 part then mix the 2 parts togather, you wont need to paint over it if you choose a color and the colors are an additional 4 bux per quart kit....it comes in quart kits and the it'll cover approximetly 30 sq ft, I bought 2 quart kits for my 10ftr, all depends on your wallet and how thick you want it. it's glossy but the reflections you see are actually trees outside the shed...this stuff is awsome....Im glad I did it.

Leak In My Jon Boat
so is this what everyone agrees on just to put a coat of epoxy? Whch do I use this site you posted has many? Do I need to sand all the old paint? do I still need to replace the rivets? Sharkbite, its called Steelflex 9X, its a 2 part epoxy that needs mixing, and colors can be added, I had a leaky lil jonboat and with this stuff, well, she leaks no more. Ask for Gerry. As far as prep work goes just sand the bottom down to bare metal, super easy with a drill and wire brush. wash it, then wipe her down with acetone...

spinning rod choice
thnx....I do recall reading negative things regarding the Kistler rods but cant seem to about the Loomy's. I have 3 Loomis rods and although not thier flagship GLX of IMX for that matter I like them. What Im not sure of is where the MossyBack series falls in quality compared to the others....Thanks man.

spinning rod choice

JOn Boat paint
This stuff is a 2 part epoxy, not really a paint...but you can add a color and Gerry (at Fasco) has a list of them, prep work consists of bringing the bottom to bare metal, not really as hard as some make it out to be, I used a wire brush on my drill and did it in about an hour, wash it down and then wipe it with acetone....mix it up 1 quart ata time and you'll be fine,1 quart will cover 30 square ft, This is really not as tough as you may think, if I can do it, anybody can.

My 1st Project(pics)
Thanks for all the compliments guys, Muddy, the seats I have are nor going to be permenatly mounted but the jb clamp style, not sure if that'll be a problem but will keep an eye on it, thank you. rondef, hopefully this week, I have a couple loose ends to tidy up but should be good2go, if it ever stops raining here in the NorthEast...lol Kansas Angler, I bought my latches & lift ring from the local boating supply store, BoatersWorld, we have a West Marine too. Thanks Again guys...I'll snap a couple more when she's 100% done, if that ever happens

My 1st Project(pics)
I then went to work on the interior....knowing she's only 10ft I really cant deck her so I just made my footing a little more stable and added a small 4" deck in the front with storage, and tried to muffle the sounds of a tin cup in open water...I used the artifical turf from the De-Pot, it was reasonably priced and it suited my needs and my buget. I had some plywood & 2x4s lyin around so I put em to good use. this was my goal for up front, to level the footing area and make a solid platform for my daughter to stand on and provide storage when Im out alone. the platform to left of the storage locker is also removable to provide extra storage if need be.

My 1st Project(pics)
after the epoxy dried I then prepped the boat surface for painting, I lightly sanded it, washed it down and rubbed the surface with acetone, as the same went for the bottom....I used Self Etching Primer and Krylons ODG Flat. I dont have many pix of the paint but I can provide a custom paint I did on the side... sorry the camera isnt the best...its my cell phone

My 1st Project(pics)
next I tackled the bottom. What I used was Fasco's 9X SteelFlex 2 part epoxy and mixed in the OD Green color. Surface prep is key with this stuff and bringing the bottom to bare metal is a MUST, the rougher the surface the better the epoxy will adhere to it...It comes in quart kits and each kit will cover approximetly 30 sq ft providing how thick it's applied...I ordered 2 quarts and color and it ran me a lil over $50 shipped from FLA...I mixed 1 quart kit at a time and used foam brushes and rollers.....it came out really good considering I ran into some trouble on my second coat and was ready to throw in the towel, but all is well and the epoxy did exactlty what it claimed to do. Protect the bottom from light scratches and place a water tite seal around the boat...NO MORE LEAKY RIVITS...EVER What looks really good is I painted my boat with Krylons ODG Flat paint and where the epoxy & paint meet, the colors blended well

My 1st Project(pics)
I bought this lil 10 TinCup fer $100, she had some minor leakage around a few rivits and seams, and the back was so worn from being pulled around over the years you could almost poke a finger thru-it. I stripped the entire bottom of the boat using a wire brush and a drill, took bout an hour, not bad considering I brought it to bare metal. On the inside I filled the holes with JB Weld and ran a bead like filler up about 6 to 8 inches from the back... I used self etching primer and a lil dab of Krylons ODG flat.

JOn Boat paint
what your looking for is called Fasco SteelFlex #9X, this stuff is a 2 part epoxy that's relativily easy to apply providing you dont get ahead of yourself and mix to much(like I did). It's used on oyster & mud boats and provides a water tite seal, the days of drilling out and hammering rivits are over, you can mix a color with it if you choose to. I did mine in OD green. heres a link, http://www.fascoepoxies.com ask for Gerry, he can help you...hers a shot of mine, its glossy but alot of the glare is from lighting n the lime green you see is actually the trees reflecting from outside the shed.
