What are you REALLY good at ? (OK to brag here ;-)
Breaking rod tips. But on a positive note I have great confidence. On the verge of cocky but not because I have the same mentality if I am fishing by myself or with my best buddy who doesnt care. I can try a technique I never used and fish it with confidence. Most of my buddies have to watch somebody (usually me) catch fish with a new bait to get confidence. My secrets to getting confidence in new baits. I am talking NEW baits or techniques like a chatterbait or swimbait. Not a new color crankbait. 1. Try them in places with lots of fish. Ponds are great for breaking in new techniques. You get confidence after catching a few nice ones. It doesnt have to be a loaded little farm pond even decent small private lake that is easier to fish than a big lake helps. Creeks are great for trying smaller baits. 2. If you dont get to try them in a pond try a new bait in a spot you whacked them on something else. We fished a bank and caught fish on a spinnerbait and we went back down it and I put on a chatterbait. The rest is history and my buddy was asking for a chatterbait very quickly. 3. Know when to throw them and what to throw them on. I always see what action rods and lines throw baits before I try them. Also I look for the times the baits are best and when they are worst. When trying new baits look for times they are supposed to excel and avoid times they arent as good. Just my 2 cents

In what conditions do you NOT throw a spinnerbait?
Spinnerbaits vary alot so there is one for about every situation. But I can usually find a better option when fishing pressure is bad and I am fishing shallow. The spinnerbait bite is often one of the first to go when pressure is bad.

Hard times hitting B.A.S.S Elite series tournaments.....
Both tours have advantages and disadvantages but the way BASS cut the number of tournaments and kept the same entry fees was embarassing. The are pocketing the fees for the 3 tournaments they cut and it isnt chump change either. $15,000 each guy donates he didnt last year. From what I have seen. BASS-better coverage, best sponsor opportunity, more prestigious FLW-better payback vs. entries If you want to be a household name you need to fish BASS but I think they have been doing people wrong since they went to ESPN and became a faceless company. For what its worth I think FLW carries itself better.

when to use lipless vs. when to use cranks
Easy. Lipless are great around grass first off. Lipless baits work best on flatter lakes without alot of contour changes. They are great on the more southern lakes that are flatland lakes. On rocks and wood cranks work better for the most part. There are no rules but these are good guidelines. Most lakes are good lipless crankbait lakes or they arent. There are exeptions but for the most part regular cranks are more versatile and lipless baits excel around grass and flat areas. David Fritts maybe the best crankbait fisherman never used lipless baits for years and now he does but he only uses lipless baits around grass where he says they outproduce other crankbaits-for what thats worth. Examples: Great lipless crankbait lakes-grass, shallower and flatter most texas lakes Guntersville Kentucky Lake Cal Delta Florida lakes Natural lakes Not great-deeper clearer lakes There are spots and times on any lake the work but for the most part they are better in certain situations.

Fathead Jr.
They are OK but I like the Basstrix and Berkley better. Use a weighted screw-in hook. Fish them when you would a spinnerbait and I like most people think they work best with 3ft visability minimum. They work best when your around baitfish and shallow fish. Thats just what I have seen and heard from pros.

Jointed Shad Rap
I love it too but its nothing like a king shad. Not saying one is better or worst but its not a swimbait. I won some money on a jointed shad rap and to me its excels when I want a slower presentation.

Favorite early spring crankbaits
I fish crankbaits more in the prespawn than any other time. Thats why I like so many. Heres my top 5 choices put into early prespawn and late prespawn. -55-really cold or cold front jointed shad rap-great wiggle secret bait of mine most people dont have CC Shad-another secret has lots of thump but poorly made. 2 out 3 need serious tuning and 1 out of 5 cant be tuned right ever. Still a great bait and worth it. Wiggle Wart-what needs to be said great bait just flat works and is different from my other choices +55-give or take Speed trap-nice bait great for running banks dives just right depth for running and gunning Shad rap-I like it over the jointed one for faster speeds DB3-my choice for big fish All the baits work anytime but usually these are the different times I go to different ones. All these baits are good coldwater baits but some work better faster or slower. So what are your favorites?

Just lookin for a few tips from those more experienced than I...
Dont listen to those yahoos. Crankbaits trust another KY boy. Heres my list of crankbaits I use in March in Kentucky. Wiggle Wart ima Shaker Jointed Shad Rap Shad Rap LurJensen Speed trap Bagley DB3 Cottoncordel CC Shad Look for chuck rock banks and fish slow-medium. If you find isolated wood and you wont find much at nolin throw a small jig like a bitsy bug or eakins jig. Jerkbaits work if the water is clearer than 3 ft. Spinnerbaits work too but I rarely see a day in early march a crankbait wouldnt catch more in KY. But throw topwaters and frogs if you want I will be catching them on crankbaits in KY tommorow.

Grayson based club looking for new members
The Happy Hookers bass club is looking for new members. We are a small club based in Grayson. We have been around for over 20 years and fish local lakes except for two 2 day away tournaments. We give awards every year for big fish and angler of the year at the annual banquet. Your top 3 tournaments go towards angler of the year so you dont need to fish every tournament to win. Our local tournaments are draw tournaments with a boater/nonboater format. I your like me and you dont own a boat its ideal you can still compete in our club. Its a great way to learn the local lakes and have fun. Annual membership is only $50 and its $20 side pot per person at each tournament with 100% payback. Our agreement is the nonboater pays the boaters sidepot instead of helping on boat gas. Our local tournaments are on Ohio River (Greenup and Maysville pools), Grayson, Yatesville, Cave Run and Greenbo. We are affiliated with FLW and offer the chance to compete in the KBF. Currently we have our first tournament scheduled for Grayson at the end of March. The April tournament will be on Yatesville at a date to be determined. And our first away tournament is scheduled for Guntersville the first of May. If your looking for a friendly competitive club we are a great choice. If you want more information or you want to fill out an application just send me a pm. Michael

Zoom Swimming Chunks??????????
Great trailer they are kind of long so they make a big trailer if thats what you want. They will give your bait a bigger profile than a twin tail grub.

Is the MAG Pop-R back or is it just me
I keep reading about how Craig Powers and other pros look for this discontinued bait on ebay and pay big bucks for them. I went to Walmart the other day and there were several new ones. I wonder if the Mag Pop-R is the same one that was discontinued. Or is he looking for something different.

Most Memorable Fights (with a fish)
I was fishing a end of year classic with a boat on the line. It was the second day and we were in 6th place. We were catching fish on crankbaits on laydowns. 2lbs was a big fish in this tournament and most of our fish were 1-1.5 After working the edges of a huge laydown in the back of a creek I threw a cast in the middle of the limbs next to the main trunk. Two turns of the handle and I had a fish it must of wrapped up instantly because I couldnt move it. We quickly went to the fish to get it lose. I kept steady pressure and could still feel the fish on. We got close and couldnt move it and then a huge boil came up and I knew it was a good fish. My partner grabed the line in the water and lifted the fish up enough to net it line still wrapped around the branches. The fish weighed 3.5 but it was big fish for the day. We ended up with a bag and won the boat. Not a big boat but still worth about 5,000. We sold it for 4,000 so the fish was worth about 2,000 to each of us.

how would YOU fish this?
Hey Sam if you looked at the map you would see it is bank fishing only. I fished the lake with my son before and everytime I have been there it has had lots of color to it. Its full of things to snag on as well lots of fishing line, rocks, wood, ect. I would do a two prong approach. First fish a swimming jig around the banks casting parrallel to the shore and working it fairly fast. Go around the lake once doing this unless its in the 50s or colder. Also cast it an work around the big dock. My next step would be fish at texas rigged worm. Use a looong rod and make casts out to find pieces of cover out off the bank others might miss. The lake is shallow enough that fish could be anywhere even out in the middle on the bottom. If you find a piece of brush out there thats where the fish would be and my guess is the kyfw put brush in the lake. I would stay away from crankbaits I fished the lake before there is a ton of fishing line in it. Good luck but I think there are better places you can fish close when the water gets warmer I live in Winchester and went to UK in Lexington and there are some decent places to fish around without a boat.

swim baits....
It sounds like your on a tight budget. I would go with a hardbait. The Spro 4in is bigger and more of a bait for quality fish not mosters but bigger fish. The 4in trutungsten is the size for just catching fish any size. I would get one of these depending on if you want something to catch big fish or something you can just go throw everyday. Before you get a 6in huddleston or any bigger swimbait you need a rod bigger than your average bass rod to throw it. And my guess is you dont have one. As a fellow Kentucky boy I probably know a little about where your fishing. Let me know where you fish and I might make a suggestion.

Great deal on Okechobee Fats bag
I got one but its wore out, zipper broke, smells funny, ect. I will run by Walmart and see if they have any here on sale. Thanks
-
Do you all think these would catch BIG BASS!
I dont understand why you need live bait to catch big fish on Guntersville. :
-
There is a rumor going around that trutungsten is going under
I heard that was the rumor going around at the Classic. Anybody know how true this is?

Kim Bain-Moore
I think the difference is people are getting upset (pros included) because she is getting a Classic berth which is a career achievement itself. You hear people talk about credentials in this order BASS top 10s Classic appearances BASS wins AOY titles and or Classic Wins People put making the classic as a big achievement. I dont think people would have a problem letting her qualify for the elite series. I am not upset like some of the pros its not a big deal to me I just think there are better ways to promote women in fishing. I think it would look better to see her compete with the guys all year to really show what she can do its hard to judge after one tournament.
-
Kim Bain-Moore
I think people are making the point I made before. I dont think the competition is the same on the WBT. Just my opinion and I am not saying some of the women cant compete with the guys they can. I just dont understand why the cant compete in the Opens or even the Elite series. How can it be sexist to think women should be able to compete with the guys and qualify that way. I dont think anbody is holding it against KBM either, I hope not. Just disagreeing with BASS thats all. I think it would make a bigger statement if a woman won an OPEN or qulified through for the Classic that way. Could you imagine the sponsors a woman could get if they were on the elite series? I dont think a woman in the Classic is going to make the impact that D.Patrick is by competing with the guys. My suggestion is give the winner of the WBT angler of the year a tour card for the elite series.

Scott Martin Challenge?
I DVR it but its not the best.. 1. The Bass Pros-no question, 3 segments per show 2. Classic Patterns-all info 3. Bass Edge-you could make a case for any of the top 3 as the best 4. Day on the Lake-a distant 4th but could be alot better if done right, every pro fishes the same lake same time of year this season (postspawn, Montecillo in ARK, last time they all fished in the winter :( 5. Bassmasters 6. City Limits 7. Scott Martin Challenge-close with City Limits but not as much info 8. FLW Outdoors-very little talk about what they are doing, in bad need of good hosts to talk some, and 15min of show is weigh-in 9. In-Fisherman if it was all bass would be much higher 10. Worlds Greatest fishing show-funny but not a ton of info Worst show-Charlie Moore

Lures that DON"T work??
All lures work to some degree. Bill Dance can do a show catching big fish on anything because he fishes ponds. In a good pond with dumb bass you could catch fish on a texas rigged tampon. The question is if a bait is worth using. If a bait is not as good as other baits in the same situations its useless. A bait may catch a few fish occasionally but it may not be as good as other options. Just go with baits that are proven by tournament anglers and guides who have time to try all the different baits and you cant go wrong. The worst place to learn about new baits is on a fishing show where the earn a check just by using a bait and dont care if something else would do better (Bill Dance, Roland Martin)

WHY IS IT???
I dont buy as many soft plastics anymore, I used to get every new bait 1. Try and limit yourself to 3 colors per bait. Some times 2. Usually a black, watermelon or pumpkin, and some other color I just like. 2. Keep your baits in plano 3700 boxes. Only use a box for each type of baits. I have a worm/lizard box, a creature/other box, finesse box, jighead box (grubs, smallie baits) and fluke senko box. I have a few plastics I keep in the package and put in the pockets of my tackle bag if I need them. 10in worms, frogs, finesse worms, maybe 20 packs I can add or subtract depending on where I am going. 3. Before you buy a bait ask yourself do I have another like it. You dont need every brand of tube, ribbontail, crawfish ect. You can experiment but stick with the brands you like, here are mine. ribbontails-culprit, berkley finesse worms-netbait, berkley, roboworm beavers-Reaction innovations Craws-Berkley, Netbait Senkos-Senkos, Yum and a few odd creature baits It works for me a new bait I am trying has to prove itself before it replaces something in the box. But I still have flexibility to bring baits I might need on certain trips like frogs, 7in senkos and extra shakey head worms. It works for me anyway.
