strike king smokin' rooster
black is a great color. i believe it is easy to see in most any water clarity. in my personal experience i've found that color can make a difference. usually changing bait size, weight or presentation is more effective, however. there have been multiple occasions where a friend and i were using same bait with different colors and one was more productive. switching to the color producing was all it took. i've proved to myself several times that color can make a difference. good tip, Hooligan. thanks.

Re: Anyone use BSR803 for tubes?
i dont know about your style of fishing but i get better hook sets on stiffer rods with plastics. spinning or casting. if youre looking for an excuse to trade it, go for it. i have the LE version of the 68mxf and it is a sweet rod.

Help a noob outfit his tackle box. (one local store to choose from)
id get a good medium power, fast action, 6'6" spinning rod and the best shimano 2500 reel you can afford. 6lb trilene xl or yo-zuri hybrid ultrasoft my first purchase would be like this: small 1/4oz crankbait (rapala) 2 x 1/4oz bitsy bug jigs (green craw) 1 pack of netbait tiny paca craws (for the jigs) 1 pack 4" senkos 1 pack of 1/0 gamakatsu drop/split shot hooks (to wacky rig the senkos) small 3/8oz white spinnerbait

RH/LH Baitcasting Reels
i am right handed. ive been using RH baitcasters since the early 90's. last year i upgraded all of my gear and bought LH reels. it didnt take long for me to realize i had better lure control and feel with my right hand on the rod. depending on budget id suggest: citica - curado - core

shift sucks.

I know it's a broken record but, line suggestions please.
if youre new to fishing or spinning reels, try that yo-zuri ultrasoft 6lb mentioned above. later on, mess with flouro and braid.

Treating myself to a finesse spinning set-up, need some advice...
too much power for a finesse rod? why wouldnt you want a little power while finesse fishing? it really all depends on what kind of finesse presentations you want to use it for... this is what i use mine for: les68mxf - finesse jigs, shakey head, light t-rig, small senkos avs69mlxf - light dropshot

Light lure baitcaster
chronarchs went on sale last year for about $180 if i recall correctly. might be kind of hard to find them now, but im not sure. great little reel by the way, have one on my light jig baitcaster and couldnt be happier. my other one will be for my small/medium crank setup... avids go for about $180 retail. i didnt have trouble finding them for about $150 last year. reeds sports had a couple sales... edit: RW beat me to it. do a search on avids. cant go wrong

New River (VA)
ive heard decent things about these guys http://www.icanoethenew.com/canoeing.html was planning on using their shuttle service and float claytor to pembroke this spring. why not primitive camp? if youre interested in that check out the website i linked. somewhere in there it tells you where to camp for each section of the trip... ive never been but people canoe and kayak there all the time. theres a few portages however. pm me if you'd like some more info, i got a book and a bunch of saved emails with good info at home... this forum has tons of new river guys on it: http://riversmallies.invisionzone.com/index.php?act=idx

Treating myself to a finesse spinning set-up, need some advice...
thats exactly what i would get. havent tried the CI4 but i love my BSR852 glx. if you dont want to sell off a child and get the glx, check out the St. Croix Avid 6'8" mxf. i have the LE version and its a great rod. def get the 2500 size

ok guys...need some help or advice
if im not mistaken, it sounds like you have all the brakes on. push 4 of those puppies in. loosen the tension so it slowly falls without shaking it. dail her in from there.

Bitsy bug Jigs
ive caught up to 6lb bass on bitsy bugs. ive caught sunfish on bitsy bugs. ive been fishing many times when bass werent hitting larger jigs and bitsy bugs got hammered. i always have an eakins or bitsy bug tied on a rod and find myself using that rod most of the day. i like using 3" craw trailers like netbait tiny paca and yum craw papi. i recommend zoom tiny chunks for if you want less action. its definately a confidence building bait.

Country Music

St Croix Avid series rod reviews
its hard to beat avid at their pricepoint. i own 3 of them.

how do you like your LTBC70MM?
im looking to trade in a AVS63mxf (tip is way softer than i thought) and i think its time i break down and buy a crankbait rod. how do you guys like the "small cranker" for 1/4-1/2oz cranks? i bought an extra chronarch 51mg when they went on sale that i think ill put on this rod... thanks in advance -z

what kind of specs to look for in a spinning rod used for soft plastics...?
if you dont plan on using jigs or weights heavier than a 1/4oz, id get a medium power, fast action. extra fast action would be a nice choice as long as the tip is not too soft... for creeks id go shorter than 7' to avoid branches and get a little more accuracy. a shorter length will also make it easier to skip baits under branches.

You can only bring two
bsr852 mbr783

DROPSHOT SETUP....???
you can use spinning or baitcast. i like a soft tip for drop shot. for t-rig i like it stiffer. but you can use the same rod. i use an AVS69mlxf. the action of the bait is caused by rod tip movements so gear ratio does not matter.

jigs
i catch the most fish on bitsy bugs by far. ive been using eakins alot lately but i still think the cheaper bitsy bugs work better for me. i like green craw color with matching 3" trailer. like mentioned above go slow. drag, shake, hop. mix it up. toss it in shallow water near the shore to watch the action your rod gives the bait to give you an idea of what your bait will do. finesse is really not the right word for a finesse jig. its just a smaller profile or a spider style skirt. finesse is how you fish a bait... i use these smaller jigs anytime i want to present a smaller profile and 100% of the time im jig fishing for river smallmouth. heavy finesse jigs are great where the current is pulling a bit. i fish: 5/16oz eakins on a 6'8" mh/xf bc 1/4oz bitsy bug on 6'6"-7" med or mh/fast (depending on cover) or xf spinning

Cheap Tackle
thats how it was for me. my progression through the sickness: early highschool - "why would anyone spend $50 on a rod when they have $50 rod/reel combos for sale?" late highschool - "wow these $100 combos are really nice" college - had a bit of money so i stepped it up to $75-$90 rods (falcon, fenwick, shimano) and sahara and symetre reels. wow what a difference! then i found bassresource.com and got my first avid. shortly afterwards came glx. run away. leave me here and save yourself.
