There's a third option, which is using a snap with the split ring. I've been doing that for years and I'll be darned if I can see any reason not to continue. No visible difference in action or number of strikes that I can detect. true, i left that one out because i dont do it. there are 2 reasons i dont do it: 1.) its bulky. i dont like all the hardware sticking out the front of my bait. i dont think the fish like it either. 2.) it adds weight. weight that is not supposed to be there. if the bait was supposed to have that much weight in the front, the manufacturer would have put a beefier split ring on for added weight. and there you have Appendix A of the Saavedra Pocket Guide to Split Rings ;D Yea it adds a least a pound of weight! Geez gimme a break, I leave em on and use a snap and I have caught fish this month

They are very good reels, the Extremes. I made a switch over to them but in the end I prefer the Trions over them. I have found that I like a reel with a more solid body and i like a cetrifugal brake better than the hybird, with my thumb doing the rest. I just set 4 of the six brakes on my Trion and I am good to go. The Extreme however is an incredible reel for 80 bucks and they frequently sell em for 60. I may keep one for wacky rigging Trick Sticks,jusy is still out on that idea.

Companies use these names because these names sell products, if you devalue the name you can get stuck in Gimmick Land I am not saying anything derogatory about Mr.Martin, I do not know him. Just an observation about some business decisions.

No matter what anyone accomplishes before they get to sell their name for market value, it goes out the window once that person uses his good name to sell a lot of garbage. Your reputation from your competative days will only go so far, once you stop competting qand then sell YOUR GOOD NAME to manufacturers and marketers selling rip off and ridiculous products as they say in court IT GOES TO CREDIBILITY YOUR HONOR and since he can't compete anylonger his record has been tarnished by his greed, NOW HE MUST LIVE WITH IT! I use a plain snap, and tie a polymar to that. NO SWIVEL , just a plain snap. I t doesn't affect the lure and it makes it easier to change lures.
