  1. I think Shimano is fine for freshwater, however there are better options out there better prices. As for salt, I doubt I would go Shimano again, saltwater approved means nothing to me. Their true saltwater spinning reels are fairly rugged but not very smooth, spheros, thunnus and baitrunners, stella sw is pretty decent but it should be for $900. In all fairness I have yet to try the new thunnus c14 or sargossa, sargossa felt nice in the store but most reels do. I have a 8000 spheros on blue water shimano tallus ( used only 3 or 4 times) which I will be giving away in the near future to one of my buddies that could use a beefier outfit, we had to run down a 20 -25# bonita with it, my similar sized Abu handled them much better.
  2. This forum has a bias towards Shimano, not all forums do, much of it having to do with regional preference and target species. As far as spinning goes I pick Abu #1 and Shimano has been demoted to last place. Not saying the stradic is a bad reel (but way over priced) the combination of unavailable parts, slow turn around time for repairs and not really standing up to salt water has me losing my Shimano appeal. IMO for freshwater a Pflueger supreme is all you need, smooth, durable but if customer service is needed it's very fast, sufficient drag and the price is right.
  3. I use braid on everything except outfits I use on party boats, mates frown on braid and just cut your line when they get tangled with other lines that happens all the time. Can you get line twist with braid.............you bet you can, I just tossed a spool of braid out due to trolling with a spoon. I did put some swivels on my spoons for my next outing, see how that will go, but on a few other braided rods trolling with a spoon caused no issue. I recently spooled up with Fins braid, so far I like it.
  4. To mix any fine liquor should be a capital crime, death by hanging. Very happy with a nice after dinner cognac.
  5. Not really sure but it may have been a flatflish, I loved those lures.
  6. If I'm not mistaken the president xt can be used for saltwater and I think it just replaces the medalist which I no longer see on pflueger's website. If that be the case the supreme xt is a good entry to saltwater.
  7. I drink 5 hour energy but only when I go out for the day on the ocean and not every time I go. Supposedly it has no sugar and no carbs, safe for a diabetic and I have zero adverse reactions to it. Question is, is it really any better than a good strong cup of coffee.....I don't know, but it works. You are absolutely correct about blood sugar varying thruout the day and it's different for everyone, the a1c is the main concern. My diabetic specialist was very pleased but said coming down slow is better than too fast, your system needs time to adjust. My only negative is that I'm hungry quite often and not satisfied, my nutritionist said my body is fooled because my water intake is less than it was so drink more water to reduce the hunger feeling..........I prefer food, lol.
  8. About 4 months ago I had a routine blood test, discovered I was type 2 diabetic. I followed the recommendations by my nutritionist, it was pretty easy too. July 30 Dec 1 Sugar 414 112, mediacation aided A1c 13.8% 6.1% Chloestrol 246 157 no medication Triglycerides 174 81 B/P 130/80 117/70 Could not be happier with my progress, still a ways to go. Prior to being 65 my numbers were always in the accepted range.
  9. Braid for everything from bluegill to marlin. Just spooled up with Fins braid on 1 reel, so far it's pretty good.
  10. Do what I always do, saltwater in the morning and freshwater in the afternoon. For the last few weeks I have been fishing with Stu Tinney, a hall of fame fisherman, we have a few trips planned.

  13. A couple of tenths of an ounce is not too important to me. At present I'm using supremes 25-30-and 35 for freshwater, I was using the 35 for snook but moved it back to freshwater in favor of a soron 20, imo a superior reel for that kind of fishing.
  14. Customer service is important to me, even if the reel never needs service knowing I can count on them is an important factor. Just about everything I have is being phased out in favor of Abu or Penn at the moment. Not to be closed minded I'm willing to try something different at anytime, it's only a reel, if it doesn't work out so be it.
  15. The reason for any sale is to stimulate revenue or to move out discontinued merchandise. Manufacturers, wholesalers and retailers are in business is to make money. Most people have no idea of what margins really are, not to mention the expenses that go with the operation of any business. In many cases the actual manufacturing cost of a product is fairly low compared to the retail MSRP. Using the greed philosophy, my next significant purchase I'm going to make them an offer, I'll take it for free just to help them clear floor space.....lol, maybe I can get a Bentley convertible for 50k or less.
  16. Judge Andrew P. Napolitano of Fox News said on TV yesterday that Wikileaks had done nothing illegal, he favored the info being leaked, if I understood him correctly. Sensitive national security issues should not be disclosed IMO.
  17. I use 5 hour energy sometimes, after some research I discovered my old Doctor in Detroit, Jimmy Bragman, developed this drink. I knew him well and I do remember him being a fitness buff and was a tennis pro while working his way thru med school. I bought some energy drink at the dollar store, the ingredients almost match 5 hour energy, I buy those now.
  18. Ice jigs or banana jigs ( all metal ) are popular down here in Florida, the spanish mackeral love em, they're hitting right now.
  19. How was the character Rick in Casablanca anything like the character he played in African Queen, totally different, as were the characters in Sabrina, or The Caine Mutiny? True many of his roles he did play the quintessential tough guy, but was great at it. John Wayne, IMO always played pretty much the same character whether it be a war movie or western, he was mediocrity at it's best , but he was the DUKE.
  20. Short answer......... No.........Have caught LMB on anything I have ever tried, that being said I do not try a lot of different products. As far as some other species, there are artificial baits they do not work for me, most of those fish require live or cut bait.
  21. If a combo only cost $24 in the first place the reel portion is probably worth 15-$20 retail, wholesale probably less than 10 bucks. Bench time without parts is worth more than $10, should have just thrown in the garbage, hardly worth spending the shipping costs back to them.
  22. Absolutely agree with 4 bizz, John Wane ( aka Marion Morrison ) was not all that good. A legend yes, but in the same league as Bogart, Gable or Flynn?............hardly. Going into a self imposed exile.
  23. At present I'm bundled with Comcast, phone, cable and internet with no real complaints. In the past I have had DSL, was ok but wasn't as good as cable. I have had the Dish network, good picture but too many outages during windy weather, going stick with what I have. Everytime I look at a smart phone I think to myself, what the hell do I need that for....haha.
  24. Stx 20 ,14# max drag perfect for most freshwater Stx 40, 22# max drag, great for inshore saltwater Stx 60 30# max drag, used offshore for kingfish As mentioned more line capacity as you work up in size. I own all 3 sizes, no longer interested in any other brand. Give ya a tip, if you buy a 20, order from Pure Fishing for $10 a size 40 handle to replace the 20, you will thank me.
