  1. Hey, I bought the Sufix Camo in 14 & 20 lbs. I was at BPS today & they had them. Price isn't that bad at $7.99 for 330 yds. I'll be spooling some baitcast reels w/ the new Camo line tonight. Thanks for the heads-up on this line!
  2. Are these any good??? Are they close to a Basstrix or not? Why I ask is the local fishing store has both of them. And they have them for $6.99 for a pack of 4, or $7.49 for a pack of 3 w/ weighted hooks. The nose part of the included hooks have a spring clip similar to a Horny Toads hook. It has lead weight on the the bottom of the hook & looks like it's around 1/4 oz. I don't care for the color selection, I'm sure I can find something close to a bluegill or shad. Thanks for any input on this lure!
  3. Flechero, I checked out the Sufix, the red box is the Elite, not the Siege. The Siege is in a blue box. The way I understand it is the Elite(red box) is similar to Trilene XL. And the Siege(blue box) is similar to Trilene XT. Now which of these 2 are you talking about. I don't know if I need to try the Elite or Siege.
  4. Is this the lure you guys are talking about???? http://www.basspro.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/ProductDisplay?storeId=10151&catalogId=10001&langId=-1&partNumber=83530&hvarTarget=search&cmCat=SearchResults I have the gizzard shad & a couple Sundays ago, snow on the ground I caught 5 bass in like 10 minutes. Yeah this lure has very good action. I did use it again the other day when the air temp was 24 deg. It didn't work all that well since the water was much colder than a couple weeks ago. I just wish it has a top hook also like the Mattlures Baby Bass. I would have caught more bass but I missed some.
  5. Okay guys, I'm taking your suggestion & going w/ a spinning reel w/ 10 lb Sufix braid. I had problems last year w/ braid & cold, cold water. The rod guides would ice up & it was not much trying to cast w/ iced up guides. That's why I thought of trying mono. I did buy something called Ice Off, it's for fly fishing guides. I think this may help keeping the guides from icing.
  6. Went out today & fished w/ 24 deg temps, snow on the ground. I had 8 lb Yozuri Hybrid spooled on my Shimano Saros 2500. I do have other spinning reels w/ other line weights. I noticed when it gets COLD, mono line just does not work that well. So, should I drop down in line weight, or do I just need to deal w/ fishing w/ mono in COLD, COLD waters??? How well do those ice fishing lines work in cold water, better than regular mono?
  7. I use a double uni knot to connect mono backing to braid. I want to use the braid & connect a floro leader using the same type of knot connection. I want to know when that knot runs through Fuji rod guides, will it cut into the guides running through the last 3-4 guides...eventually??? Do you lose some distance since there is friction of the knot running through the guides? Would using steel rod guides like on some Berkley/Fenwick rods be better for knot connection to run though versus Fuji guides? Is there a chance that while knot connection is running through the a lure is casted, that the knot connection will "catch" on a guide & lose distance or screw up the guide?
  8. Thank you RW! I do have a 1/4 spool of 12 Hybrid & may get the 15 lb also. I like the fact that it will not kink or backlash easy. How about casting distance do you lose any distance w/ heavier lines? I posted about putting on 12 lb Hybrid on my Sol baitcast reel. I think I may put on 8 lb Hybrid. I want to keep it a light b/c & cast lighter lures, so that may be the better way to go. When I lived in So Calif, my first b/c reel, the sales guy convinced me to spool w/ 8 lb P-line CXX. He said that the breaking strength was like 12-14 lbs & was all I really needed for the shore bass fishing I would be doing. The line did great & the more I learned about bass fishing I went w/ heavier lines & for the past couple years have used braided lines on my b/c & some spinning reels here in Indiana. I get hung up more often & braid I can get my lure back. But now I want lines that I don't backlash too often.
  9. What's the breaking strength of the 12 lb Yozuri line? I am looking for a good all around line weight & not sure if I want to go to this or go to 15 lb Hybrid(also any idea what the breaking strength?). Your thoughts???
  10. Just wondering if the recoil guides would make too much noise using braided line. Looking to getting a b/c rod w/ recoil guides but not sure if it'll make too much noise. Also, using a rod w/ Fuji guides & braided line, I know that it does make some noise when you're cranking in line. Does the sound also go out onto the water & will it be amplified???
  11. I know the specs says 10 lb, 90 yds. But can I use 12 lb mono, like Yozuri Hybrid instead??? I know that I'll lose yardage if I go to 12 lbs, but will it affect the reels performance?
  12. Found these at the local fishing store. The bill is similar to the Aarron Martens Scrounger head. http://www.***.com/descpageAMSCROUNG-AMSH.html The lure is interesting that the bill is made of a softer plastic. It's not as stiff as a bill on a crankbait, but a bit softer. You can bend the bill & it will retain back its shape. I think the Scrounger head is similar, when you look at both the pics. The Berkley version, you get 4 shad bodies w/ the pack, it retails for $3.99. And has the Powerbait scent....stinky IMO. I switched out the Berkley shad body w/ a Zoom Fluke instead, I trimmed the front portion, so it's not quite as long & cut it to closley match the angled head pattern on the jighead. Haven't tried the Manic Shad yet, bought it last night. I'll be giving it a go tomorrow, see if this thing swims good. I've been interested to try the Scrounger when I first saw them a few years ago, but never bought. Now Aarron Martens has brought them back, but not wanting to place an order, the Berkley Manic Shad will suffice for now. Will post later on how the lure works...

Similar as they walk the dog, but more like a higher priced Storm Chug Bug w/ flashier colors.
  14. Go to Walmart & go to the automotive area. Look for a can of CRC silicone spray. It's similar to Reel Magic, but it's not food grade silicone spray. It cost $1.99 & works just as well as Reel Magic. I've used it on my mono lines w/o no problems of the lines getting brittle or anything. Save yourself the shipping cost of that other silicone spray & take a trip to Walmart.
  15. Here's a pic of the 3 new reels. The Saros pictured is the 1000, I exchanged it for the 2500.
  16. I like the Saros alot, but look at the Team Daiwa Advantage. That is one smooth reel, it's actually a bit smoother than the Saros. What part of Indiana you from? I am by South Bend & the Michigan border.
  17. This reel intrigues me. I missed out on the older models when they were the "in" thing years ago. I wanted Shimano spinning reels instead. I'm looking to buying this reel, but wanted some feedback from here, if anyone owns it. I know it can't compare to the 2008 Team Daiwa Advantage, or the Shimano Saros that I have, but I don't have an Abu Garcia spinning reel. Something about the "retro" look makes it appealing.
  18. The Avid Premier spinning rods do the same thing, the seat screw thingy loosens. What I've done to keep it from slipping....tighten down the screw thingy w/ the reel on the seat & then wrap electrical tape, tight on the end of the screw thingy. Make sure you are a mm or so just above the bottom lip of the screw thingy so the electrical tape will slide under the thread. If the screw thingy does come loose the electrical tape will catch & keep it secure.
  19. I would have to say that they are an upgrade to an Ugly Stick. They are light, they get the job done & they are cheap. Cherry Woods are a bit more sensitive than an Ugly Stick, granted that the Ugly Stick is made by Shakespeare. I have a 7' spinning rod that I've caught a 9 lb steelhead trout on. No problems, it was the perfect action, medium action, but it's more like a ML. Check the actions out on the Cherry Woods, they are a bit softer than other mfg's actions...BPS would be one of them. I like the new Lightning Rods, but I don't like that they don't have as many guides as some other rods do. But both the Cherry Wood & the Lightning Rods have stainless steel eyelets & that has very good line feel. Since both rods are made "cheaper", if they added on ceramic guides it would kill the feel of the rods. The stainless steel eyelets is what makes both these rods, good sensitivity w/ braided line. I would try one out first, make sure it's the action you want. You can buy 5 Cherry Woods for the price of one BPS Extreme rod. Also, the Lightning Rod, some people have mentioned that you do not want to overtighten the grip turning handle to lock in your reel. They have a tendency to bust easily, so you don't want to torque down too tight. I picked up a 5' Cherry Wood today from Wallyworld. It says that it's light action, but more like UL, & that's what I am looking for. I have another rod that is light action & it is totally different action, that it's truly a light action rod. The Cherry Wood light action as I have mentioned is more like UL. I also have a 7' baitcasting rod, it's medium action, but feels more like ML. I would use braided line w/ either rods so you have good hook setting w/ the softer actions.
  20. I checked out the other Tierra's the store had & they pretty much were the same...noisy. The did have the new 2008 Team Daiwa Advantage. it's a step up from the Tierra. I bought that the 2000 series & it is so much smoother & not noisy at all. Also I traded up the new 2007 Shimano Stradic for the 2008 Saros in 1000 size. I compared the 1000 Saros to my 750 Sedona & it's the same body size. The Saros takes 110 yds of 6 lb line, while the Sedona 750 takes 95 yds of 6 lb line. Not much difference in line quantity. But the Saros is a very big step up in performance from the Stradic & obviously the Sedona. It's just too bad that I bought these so late in the season, they won't get a real workout till spring of next year.
  21. I picked up a Tierra today, a size 2000. Feels really nice but....it's a bit noisy, not like the Stradic 1000 that I got last week. But from what I heard is that Daiwas are a bit more noisy, is that true w/ your Tierra? I'm brining the Tierra w/ me tomorrow & check out a couple other Tierra 2000 & see the too make the same noise. I'm going to be switching out the Stradic 1000 (brand new) w/ a new Saros 1000 or 2500 tomorrow. After reading some of the reviews from people who bought the Stradics, that they were having problems w/ the 2007 models, I'm concerned. It seems that the Saros answers problems from the Stradic. I've always bought lesser line spinning reels & lately I've been liking what's been coming out from Shimano & Daiwa. More of a mid price, better performance spinning reels. I also picked up last week the Pflueger Supreme 8030MGX spinning reel. That reel is really smooth & very light. It holds lots of line & casts quite well. So I will have 3 better quality spinning reels, that works for me!
  22. Price wise a difference of $15. Both have similar features, but named differently per company. If comparing both reels in 2500 size....does one spinning reel just better than the other, or both the same? I know the Tierra is made in China, but not sure where the Saros is made. I do know that the Shimano Strdic's made in Japan. Have you guys seen or tried any of the two? Who owns either spinning reel, comments on either reel?
  23. I returned the Capricorn. I finally had a chance to check out the reel which was on a table on clearance. I then noticed the main spool had a couple nicks on the outer lip on top of the spool. I'm guessing that since this was out that anyone could pick it up, it must have been dropped & the lip of the spool got the brunt of the drop. This is not cool, I know I could've taken a dremel & polished it out, but why? So I brought it back today & picked up a Team Daiwa Tierra 2000. Tried it out today & it felt quite nice. Very sturdy & light feeling. The rain started when I was fishing so I didn't catch anything. Bummed me out cuz I wanted to feel how well the Tierra worked. I guess that's for another day....I gotta say that this is the most expensive spinning reel I own. Well I do have a new Shimano Stradic 1000 that I got last week, but I had some rewards points & 25% off, so that doesn't count as being the more expensive one....
  24. That's what is inherent w/ all flourocarbon line. I learned the hard way like you did, it will fly off the reel & tangles. The flouro is a much stiffer line than regular mono. How big is your Pflueger reel? If it's a small UL size or under a 1000/1500 size reel, then yes you will have problems. Flouro does not play well on small reel spools. You need to get a bigger reel like a size 2000 or 2500 (or even a size 3000/3500 reel) for starters for the 8# flouro you are using. You'll run into the same problems w/ Vanish. It's all about spool size. Smaller spool size w/ 8# flouro will jump off the spool. You'll need to bump up your spinning reel to a bigger spooled reel. If you look at Kevin Van Dam's setup w/ a spinning reel & flouro line, you'll see that he is using a much bigger reel. With a smaller spool like on a UL spinning reel, since the flouro is stiffer, it will want to "pop" off the spool. Now if you have a bigger spool the line will stay put better. Also the 6'6" UL rod you are using is too whippy for your 8# flouro, drop down to 4# flouro, this may help. Also if you are using light lures, like 1/8 oz & under w/ your UL, then there is not enough tension & another cause for the flouro line to fly off the reel. Try using a heavier lures like 1/4 oz & it will minimize this. Hope this helps, look at some reels that are size 2000 or 2500. Here's a couple ideas- Shimano Stradic/Sahara/Sedona 2500, Daiwa Tierra/Exceler/Regal/Laguna(discontinued) 2000 (these reels are smaller than the Stradic or any Shimano 2500 size). Your not the exception, just learning the hard way...as I did.
  25. You guys checked out this reel? I'm looking at the 1000 size in this reel. I just bought the Stradic 1000, but the Saros is really catching my eye. I wonder if it is a better reel than the Stradic. The Stradic 1000 has a slightly faster gear ratio than the Saros. Any of you guys own the Saros???
