Your question is understanding the moon phases for fishing, but you also need to understand this is only part if the equation. You will need to understand weather, seasons, water conditions, structure ECT to locate and catch fish!

There have been numerous books, articles, charts, ect. published on this great mystery of bass fishing. A lot of the authors of these publications go through great lengths explaining how difficult it is to determine these times. It is really quiet simple to determine these times for your self with a little inside information. River and salt water publications go through great lengths explaining how difficult it is to determine tidal movements. The reality is that these best times and tidal movements are related to the moon's phases. People in animal husbandry, farming, hunting, and fishing has used the moons phases for centuries. One of the oldest publications giving this information is the "Poor Richard's Almanac". The moon's phases are divided into four quarters, two of which are your minor times, and two of which are your major times. The times for the major periods are as follows: An hour and a half prior the moon reaching its apex An hour and a half prior to the moon reaching its perigee. The major periods are the first quarter new moon and the third quarter full moon. The gravitational pull of the sun and moon is three times greater on the new moon than the full moon. At the time of the new moon the earth has the moon and the sun in a straight line pulling together. This first quarter, dark night phase differs from the third quarter full moon phase when the earth moves between the moon and the sun. The new moon dark night is only difficult on the angler because you must rely on your sense of feel when working your bait. If you want to really learn how to fish baits that require a lot of feel like worm or jigs try nights. The times for the minor periods of these moon phases are as follows: An hour and a half prior to the raising of the moon on the horizon. An hour and a half prior to the setting of the moon. Now take into consideration the above listed times you end up with 3 hrs. of major time periods and 3 hrs. of minor times periods. This does not take into account weather, seasons, or your ability to locate fish!

Strike zone is defined as the distance at which a bass has sensed you baits presents and is willing to travel that distance to strike your bait. The key to catching bass is to put your bait into this strike zone as much as possible. When flipping/pitching you are targeting a single object & the strike zone surrounding it, depending on the amount of cover this could be as little as 2' diameter to 15' diameter. When casting you are not targeting a single object but rather an area & the strike zone surrounding you bait along it's path back to the boat. This is why I believe your odds of getting bit is greater casting a jig rather than flipping/pitching, once you've caught a few bass on the jig by using this technique then the transition over to flipping/pitching will be easier. Muddy if you were not confused before you probably will be now, hopefully you will get the message or maybe someone can better explain it.

While I can not speak for Bass Pro Shops or Cabala's I can speak for Academy since I work for them. When an item is returned it is returned to Customer Service who is told by the customer the reason for the return, if the customer does not state the item is defective the associate will place the item in that departments return box. The item is then picked up along with all returned items by that departments associate and placed back into stock. If the customer tells Customer Service the item is defective the Customer Service associate will tag the item as defective and the item is not returned to stock. Defective items are not checked by anybody; they are simply marked defective and sent to shipping/receiving. You can bet Bass Pro Shops or Cabala's policies on returned items are handled in the same manner.

Leave the skirt alone, rig with your favorite worm hook, your favorite plastic & fish it like a Texas Rig. The skirt of a Texas Rig Jig gives your bait the bulk of a jig but still allows the weight to slide up the line keeping the bass from using the extra weight to throw it. When I teach someone how to fish a jig I start them off with the Texas Rig Jig because it fills the gap between the Jig-N-Craw and the Texas Rig, it is a viable third option that many anglers over look. With the standard Jig-N-Craw I think to many anglers get the notion that it has to be flipped or pitched, fishing it in a near vertical presentation. A Jig-N-Craw is extremely deadly when fished the same way you would a Texas Rig and in my opinion much easier to master.

I totally agree with ReelMech, at Academy I've had other managers look at returned reels, play with them for a few minutes and say put them back in stock. All of the associates in my hunting/fishing department simply move them to the back of the stock where the sit for ever.

I've used them ever since they were invented having two on each boat I've owned, my suggestion would be to check the wiring.

Don't peg it Fish it like you would a Texas Rig, this will give you the confidence need when you chance over to a regular jig. When you do fish a regular jig don't flip or pitch it, work it the same way you would a Texas Rig. A jig is not just for flipping'/pitching, working it like you would a Texas Rig can be more productive, you cover more water increasing the odds you'll get bit.
