How often do you clean your drag systems?.... and some ranting....
once a year is likely good i assume, sometimes i get a little OCD on my drags...... i dont know if i could let them go a full 2 yrs though, i suppose im just a little crazy in that respect! (and ya, i know i did go for 10 and 15 yrs on the models pictured, but i was pretty young and............ i just put them back into the game )
-
Go to lure
my go to...... well as i mostly fish ponds, from shore........ my highest producing, and consequently go to bait would be the jointed rapala (black on silver). i will fish that for much longer than any other bait when im trying to find out what is producing that day!
-
Hook under the fingernail today.
agreed.... it could have been much worse, but, under the nail........ thats some pain for sure!
-
How do I spool braid?
agreed.... i use gorilla tape. and as for leaders, in fresh ..... no way, straight braid with a polomar... in salt, yes. 40 lb mono for inshore. i use 40 lb suffix braid.
-
Not happy with braid.
i love my 40 lb suffix braid.... some of my buddies have had issues with their PP, so i didnt bother to even try it.......... so i cant comment first hand on it..... but, the suffix has given me no problems at all on my spinning gear (saros 3000), and ive fished it for nearly 6 months now...... i love it, and could never use mono on this outfit again!!!

Hurricane rods.....redbone and caliko jack.... a couple questions.
Ive been interested in the Hurricane rods for my salt endeavours and have just a couple of questions, hopefully someone can help.... I want the red bone series as my main inshore rod, 7 foot...likely md. or md. lite action, but i need it in a 2 piece...... and i can only find them in one piece around town.... does anyone know if they make them in a 2 piece model?? and the caliko jack model....... i was thinking about purchasing one as well, and their half the price..... i have 2 questions on these as well...... do these come in a 2 piece, as i cannot find them.... and, are they a blank through handle design, or not?

Smithwick Devils Horse
they just work, flat out..... i still use my devils horse, and it still produces................................dont mess with the classics ;D

How often do you clean your drag systems?.... and some ranting....
Well as i could not fish today, i did some general maintenance on all of my reels......... i cleaned and re-greased all of my drag systems on all of my setups... now for reels i use regularly, i do this once every six months or so...... but today i preformed this on reels that are very old, and i have never maintained (reels from my youth that i have just brought back into action). so, generally speaking..... i clean and re-lube my drags about twice a year.... i was wondering what the norm was, or how often you all do this.... ..................now for some ranting about a couple of the drag systems that i cleaned for the first time ever today!! ------the reels, daiwa regal-Z 1500 and shimano stradic 2000 (both pictured below)-------- first i cleaned the stradic's drag, which is an old model..... and i purchased it roughly 10 years ago. i noticed that the drag system only consisted of one metal washer, and one felt washer!!!!!!!!!! this really surprised me at how non-existent the supposed "multi element" drag was... so next i cleaned to daiwa regal-Z, which i purchased about 15 years ago..... i thought before i opened it up, "wow, i wonder what sorry excuse of a drag this thing is going to have".... seeing as how it is a lower model, and 5 years older, and half the price of the stradic.... .....well, the regal-Z had a true multi element drag that consisted of 3 metal washers and 3 felt washers!!!!!!!!! and now im thinking...............WHAT!!!!!!!!???????????? how is it possible that a stradic which is a higher end model, and five years newer, AND $100 (at the time)....have such an inferior drag!!!! as compared to the regal-Z... which is five years older, a lower end model, and only $50 (at the time). what gives?????????? *********all of my newer shimano's have excellent drags though**********

Lure Selection
i try d@mn near the whole tackle box, and sometimes that wont even work!!!! then ill try varying speeds and retrieves with them, and again sometimes that wont work!!!!! but between the "sometimes" above, one method usually produces..... but i hate those days, with finicky bass that are a pain in the @zz to get to bite anything..... love the days where they hit everything i throw....... but unfortunately, that doesn't happen all that often :'(

Lunker Lake, and 2 GREAT bass......... what a day!!!!!
thank you. and i have found that many of the larger bass (5+lbs) that come from this pond seem to be under fed (probably about 70 percent or so, while the remainder are nice and fat).
-
and she's only 7!
WOW great news for the little one... i remember the recent post of her fishing in what appeared to be the same area, and how you said she likes using lures "so she can trick them"... i thought we were all in trouble then, and now i know were all doomed!!!!!!! you've created a monster, that in time will destroy us all........ she will no doubt be an amazing fisher for the rest of her life. thats one monster fish she caught, and im sure it made you both extremely happy... congrats for her.... and for you as well.

Who needs rods, reels and lures?
interesting story....... and in this case size does play a role i believe..... @ 1.5 lbs, sure call it a catch..... but, if a 10.5 leaped into the boat....... i dont believe that one should boast that it was a catch. funny how it just hopped on in with ya!!
-
Wild Catch
frogs on frogs...... weird, eh !!!??? and the pic is GREAT!!!!!!!!! i love how he's grabbing on to it with both hands ;D ;D ;D
-
Whats Gone Wrong?
agreed. also agreed..... and thats simply how it should be. .....and i am guilty of a few jabs myself, here and there........ but not personal ones, more in the way of a good laugh at inferior tackle and such..... great advice is why i came here, and that is why i stay....... no matter what, this site is simply amazing for the fisherman!!!
-
Lunker Lake, and 2 GREAT bass......... what a day!!!!!
i love this spot, and the fact that me and my pal are the only one's that i have ever seen fishing it........(and we keep our mouths shut, for good reason ) i tell ya what....... if i ever move out of the orlando area for good, i will hold a free raffle for the coordinates to the amazing untouched fishery that "lunker lake" is......(because, honestly.... if i cant fish it...... someone who is worthy needs to!!)

Do You Think Catching a Big Bass is Luck?
well, i didnt read all the responses.... but here's my take on it........ yes.... if you are not specifically targeting them as you said, then sure its luck..... now if im hunting for them, then no....... consistantly catching high numbers of fish is not luck, but catching one large one.....unassumingly, probably is. but most all of us in here have a good grasp on the sport, so we may not consider ours to be "luck"......... but some newb fishing a spinner upsidedown with a bobber and a rubber worm....... well, i think we all know the answer to that one
-
Pond Bass
nice little guy you got there.... id say a little under 2 lbs..... really dont know for sure, as pics are hard to judge in general.
