Question for rod builders
Koopa, Nice idea to fix them up for Dad but by the time you figured time and labor, I'm afraid you'd be unhappy... especially since you can buy new ones these days that are not too expensive and probably much nicer. :-/ Why not build him a new one yourself? That would be a super gift.

Lettering and Decal help
I fooled around with making my own in the beginning but never even got close to the quality of decal connection. Really, when you factor time, it's way cheaper to buy them. I would spend an hour or more per decal, by the time it was said and done- for substandard results... with Decal Connection, I pay $0.25- $3 each depending on size, qty. & text or graphic, and they are perfect every time. Not to mention Debbie is pretty fast... most orders arrive 2-3 days after I place the order. Just email it in a few days before you need them. I thought about buying an ALPS printer but I'd need to make about 1000 decals to justify the cost over time... and that doesn't even consider the value of my time.

Line Twist Help
There is only one universal cure for line twist... troll it. Depending on how you spooled it, what presentations you fish and a few other habits will dictate how often this is necessary

Crankin hookset...
I'm 100% opposite of most people with cranks and traps... I set, with almost the same effort as I do with a worm... the only difference being that it's on the move when they strike. I don't lose a lot of fish with trebles. My own theory on it is that when you just lean on it and keep it tight, you don't always sink past the barbs which is why I think they throw it at the boat where you can't always hold a slackless situation especially when they thrash. If a fish grabs a crankbait, the hookset has to pull a bulky bait from (or through) clenched jaws and then sink one or more hooks into the fish... Try a few "sets" next time out, either it will work for you or it won't but you should know within a few fish it it's for you. For what it's worth, I became a believer in this while fishing below the dam at Texoma, where the stripers are running the current... we'd lost tons of fish thinking they set themselves since they hit it so ferociously on the run with the current... when we started setting it harder, we instantly began catching most of the bites we got. right or wrong, it works for me.

G-Blanks Rod Review
Just for clarity's sake, MY POST WAS PURELY DIRECTED AT THOSE THAT BASHED THE WARRANTY. My comments were in no way meant to imply anything (good or bad) about the build quality or the builder in question.

Thinking Outside The Box-Painting Cork Handles Black?
Any coating, paint or otherwise that won't wear off will make the cork feel like plastic. You would be better served to do what The Natural does, using either wrap or heat shrink on your grips. Lots of people have tried staining and painting cork but I have yet to hear of one working where the color stayed and didn't bleed to the hand of the user.

Fly Rod Refurb
Unless it's bamboo, there isn't much to refurb... clean it up and go cast it! In the right circumstances, fly fishing is awesome!!

G-Blanks Rod Review
That's a pretty crappy generalization, and not to mention complete BS. And I am sure that most other builders would take offense to that as well. If one of my rods breaks and I handle the warranties... with blank or component manufacturers directly. It's not a free replacement if the blank fails, but it would be if my workmanship was the fault that caused the failure. Respectfully, all you warranty bashers are out of your minds. Let's first look at the facts in this case: $150 custom rod. That's about what most of us charge in labor alone. The blank is warranted by the manufacturer, ups doesn't chip in and ship for free, even when it's under warranty. Expect shipping charges most of the time. His warranty is weak, but he isn't hiding anything... if you weren't satisfied, before it broke, you could have returned it... that's actually pretty generous. Anyone who is looking to buy a cheap custom is going to need to pay attention to what the ads say. Because when something sounds too good to be true, it usually is. Think of it this way, you saved so much on the first few "great deals" that it's like you bought 2 at the normal price and got the 3rd one free... the broken one was just a trial. But hey, for $100 you can get #5... and still only have normal price in it. If you want a no questions asked no fault replacement policy, buy shimano rods. I'm sure that won't be a popular post but it needed to be said.

buzz bait bite!!
Me either. And I rarely have trouble with short strikes.

What blank is the first one, the blue one? Doesn't look like a CTS color and I think is way too blue to be SCV, but looks too deep to be SCIV.

A split seat... they used to be called (and still are by some of us) a Tharp style seat... Tharp is the guy who is credited with starting it.

dead lunker
I hate that rule... it's a waste of the resource. It encourages people to throw dead fish overboard instead of keeping and eating them.

Pistol Advice
Once you have a permit to carry(or even before) you'll need to start looking for (and order) a holster. Some take a long time to get as they are made to order and some are stocking items. An IWB, or an OWB that specifically made for concealment (as they pull the grip in tighter) is a must, IMO, for CC... and don't be surprised if you end up with more than one holster... most people go through a couple on the quest to find the most comfortable option.
