  1. I have been fishing spinner baits since the 70's & consider myself pretty good with one. Your question was kind of open & Catt's answer was 100% correct but Nick's answer where "the water is below 45 there are better baits to use", is also good. Once the water gets that low a bass is not going to chase very far so you are better off to use a slower moving bait like a jig. Don't take this wrong a slow rolling spinner bait will work but there are better presentations.
  2. I fish out of Angel's landing on Lake Moultrie, I too am a retired Navy vet. 21yrs Submarine force. I fish the Boze Sumo Frog but have purchased all the colors of the Live Target ones this past fall. I like the way these sit in the water also. Richard over at the store at Short Stay has a very good tackle shop & has good selection of baits including Spro Frogs. It's the 1 to 3' gators that are a pain in the butt. They will chase it right to the boat & will then hang around waiting for to cast & retrieve again. Just smack them with your rod & they will move away for a few min. Make sure to have Senko type baits with you. We will have to hook up while your both here.

  9. Shipping Rods is expensive. I have shipped many & always by FedEx Express Saver(never had a problem). Just the FedEx cost ran about $30. depending on the amount of Insurance.
  10. Looks like I'll have to be in the Mr. old farts to you club.
  11. After 21yrs in the diesel electric submarine force I am down to 3 pots a day. I do miss the the flavor of the lube oil or diesel fuel blend though. kept you loose.
  12. I have all 4 of the colors Koppers makes. I was on the water this past week & did throw one to see how they would do. I think it will be a very good frog but it's a bit pricey compared to the Boze Sumo that I normally use. As did Quake & Shake I found the frog to be very soft which when pressed on exposes the hooks all the way. I also like the upward angle of the hook. The hooks on my 4 were very sharp. I threw it for 15 to 30 min on a grassy flat without a blow up & went back to catching a few on a spinner bait. I liked the way the frog sat in the water (low with the head out at rest). You will also have to squeeze the water out every 4 or 5 cast which does not bother me. The one thing that does concern me is the softness. I wonder how fast it will tear up when I start catching fish on it. It will be a while before I find that out though, springtime.
  13. Like Micro I carry a lot of gear in my Z-21. I have 27 rigged casting rods in the boat now. 24 have Hybrid or Ultra Soft on them. Several years ago R/W put me on Yo-Zuri & I found it to be an excellent line. My rods are all custom built on Shikari SHX blanks which are sensitive so I don't use braid. I do have the other 3 rigged with AbrazX & Tatsu which I also like. It's pricey & I don't think it increases my catch. I use Yo-Zuri from 10 - 30lb test & have no problems. I do use KVD line & lure on it from time to time. I try to keep things simple & not over think things. The very best way to improve your catch rate is time on the water which for the past several years I have been able spend 175 to 200 days a year.
  14. I have several Tn 60's & fish them regularly. I also fish the Octopus Flick shake. I have caught a few good bass on it but the problem is the Bluegill go for it big time so I don't use it as much.

  18. If I remember right the Merc 200 efi was a big time gas hog. I am not sure now but maybe someone will chime in on that point.
  19. You might look at a Shimano Caenan It has a lot of features & sells for $89.99
  20. The Calais has a 6.2:1 with a IPT of 26. I have several & it's a solid reel.
  21. I am trying to decide. I want 2 reels & I want them to be the same one. They will be left-handed & used for plastic's & spinner baits. I am trying to choose between Chronarch 101D7, Core 51mg, Metanium Mg or Aldebaran. In the last two I can a a lower gear ratio in one for the spinner baits. Oh well I still have time.
  22. I have a rider on my home owners that covers my rods & reels for up to $17,000 at a cost of $81. a year. I had to provide pictures & description of them & it covers them where ever they are with me.
  23. I received my Koppers frogs from T/W this morning so if it warms up a tad & the wind lays down a good bit I'll be trying them out later this afternoon, if not over the week-end.
