TCW III oil test results
When I read about people talking about carbon build up I wonder if it is the molybdenum in some of the oils. I am not a chemist but that is pretty tough stuff. Read The link I posted about it in the results. Perhaps it does not burn completely during combustion and that is the gunk that builds up in the motor. The stuff melts at 4753 °F and Boils at 8382 °F I do not think the motors get that hot in the combustion chamber or hot enough to keep it vaporized until it leaves the exhaust. The combustion process may be hot enough to burn the gas and oil off and leave the molybdenum behind. Perhaps that is why Mercury sell there quick clean stuff. We'll never know.

TCW III oil test results
When they said there is "no insolubles found". doesn't that mean there was nothing else there other than oil and the stuff they found? I think "additives were scant" means anything else added was very little and of no help to anything.

TCW III oil test results
The much anticipated TCW III test results are back. Follow this link to see. http://home.comcast.net/~team_dougherty/results/results.html From my interpretation of the results, they are all pretty much the same stuff, 20W oil and dye. The only minor difference is the Mercury and Yamaha sample had molybdenum in them. Take these results and do what you like. I will stick to supertech.

trolling motor problems
Then you may have an issue with the motor. If it worked fine for over a year then stopped. Is it a variable speed motor? or with 5 set speeds? If it variable maybe the control board is shot. If it is a 5 speed maybe the speed switch, or resister some where is bad. hard to say. I would not think a 25 amp fuse would be big enough for a trolling motor. Is it a 70 lb thrust? They say for a 12 volt motor 1 amp of current per pound of thrust. So for your 24 volt, if it is 70 lbs of thrust, I would think it would draw at lease 35 amps. So you would need at least a 50 amp fuse.

trolling motor problems
What size fuse is it blowing? Maybe you need to switch to a breaker. Maybe the motor on high just draws to much for the fuse you have selected.

Does my trolling motor battery need a SURGE PROTECTOR?
Try one of these has a breaker built in. http://www.minnkotamotors.com/products/accessories/detail.asp?pg=powercenter

5hp Briggs
It may be vibration causing the prop to turn. With My 40 HP evinrude running on muffs out of the water the prop will slowly move in Neutral. In the water it does not. WITH THE MOTOR NOT RUNNING and in Neutral can you freely spin the prop? if not maybe the shift cable needs to be adjusted.

The value and savings of a good mechanic.
I have a good story. A few years ago I was in Canada for a two week vacation. On Thursday of the first week my outboard started to run like crap. Water was leaking all over the place. I thought the second week was going to be awfully dull without a boat on a fishing vacation. I drove to the closest boat place, Sharbot Lake Marina, and told my tale of woe. The owner, Brian, told to get my boat and bring it in and he would look at it. I did just that. He called me on Friday told me what was wrong, The block had come loose from the leg, and he would need to overnight the gaskets if I where to have in on Sunday. Mercury screwed up the order and they did not get there until Monday. But on Monday night he stayed late to finish so I could have my boat the rest of the second. All in a good experience. The total cost for the labor, parts and overnight shipping to the middle of nowhere Canada was $500.00CDN. I even got some of the sales tax back on the way home at the border. Part II When I went to pick up the boat my Blazer would not start in the parking lot come back to the lake. I thought great now what. I went back in an again told a tale of woe. Brian said I'll make a call. In 15 minutes a huge tow truck, one for towing 18 wheelers, shows up. The driver gets out we talk he tries to start my car. He has me try and start it while he is out back. He get into his truck comes back with a 5' piece of schedule 80 pipe. bangs the gas tank and says try it again the blazer starts right up. The Driver said bad fuel pump. I thought great did not want to get stuck on the way home to the states. The tow truck driver said his shop was right around the corner. I took the boat back to the lake. Drove the blazer back to the garage they drove me back to the house I was staying in. They replaced the fuel pump the next day and delivered it back to me. talk about service. to give you an idea the house I was staying in was 15 miles away from the marina and the auto repair shop. About half of that is on one lane dirt roads. The auto repair place did me a great service taking me back there and delivering my car back to me and the repairs all for $300CDN. I would highly recommend both places to anyone staying near sharbot lake if they need their car or boat repaired. As a side note it looked funny seeing this huge tow truck towing my s10 blazer when they brought it back to me. They could have carried it with it.

quicksilver or supertech?
I received the test kits in the mail today. Who wants to put their oil up against supetech, pennzoil and evinrude XD50? I will send the oil for testing as soon as I get two more samples to send. There has to be some one local to me who has different oil to test.

4 wheel drive vs. All whell drive?
Surfer has it right. In a 4X4 if in 4WD and you turn tightly on a non slippery surface the inside back wheel will actually spin faster than the car is going. You risk the chance of breaking the Xfer case. My wife's jeep is is AWD and I notice that is is harder to turn on dry pavement than my blazer 4X4 in 2WD in a parking situation. The blazer is almost impossible to do the same maneuver in the blazer in 4WD. In the jeep it is true AWD but it does have a low range. When in a slippery situation snow or wet ramp all 4 wheels will pull. In my blazer in 4WD only one wheel on each axle will spin on a wet ramp on in snow. My guess there is not a posi or limited slip in the blazers axles.

quicksilver or supertech?
Here and every other boating and fishing site. I received an email in response to my request from http://blackstone-labs.com They will test the oils I have. again they are evinrude XD50, Supertech TCW III and pennzoil TCW III. I will post exactly what the part numbers are for the pennzoil and Supertech are. They will not say which is the best oil or recommend one. but they will list the ingredients and other properties. I think that should be enough to see if it worth paying for higher cost oil. Does anyone have any other oil that want to test? These tests are $22.50 each sample. I will pay for 5. If someone wants to send me a Mercury and a Yamaha sample I think 5 should be a good enough sampling. Please make sure they are TCWIII. I want and apples to apples comparison. If someone is local to Oaks, Pa and wants to witness the sampling and packaging please feel free. We can discuss the date and time. If you have the other needed samples bring them along. The Pennzoil and supertech are still in new unopened bottles. The XD50 is in an old cornoil bottle because the original got a hole in it on the way to Canada last year. You'll have to trust me that it is XD50. Yes I have XD50 only because it was free with the outboard I bought last year. I will label the samples A,B, C etc... this way the lab will not know which is which. I would like to get this done by the 25th. Who's game? I will post the results here and other sites where this question comes up.

quicksilver or supertech?
What's the best oil to use? Ah, the million dollar question. We are an independent lab, so we don't make recommendations. It has been our experience that oil is oil, and either petroleum or synthetic-based oil will work well for just about any engine. These people test used oil to see how your engine is doing. I think they would know. I will contact them and see if I can send new samples of the supertech, pennzoil and evinrude xd 50 I have and see if they can tell me which one is better.

Boat Ladders
I agree a ladder is a great help getting in your boat should you fall out. I have used the cavitation plate on my out board to get in. For you guys with power tilt you can stand on the cavitation plate and use the buttons mounted on the outboard to lift you right in the boat.
