You must not be holding it right....
I like the Mustad KVD Elite trebles. They have short shanks too.

Control the head and you control the body. I would keep the tip down.

Bass fishing for kids
I would say a Zebco 33 with a 6' MF rod so he can get a feel for how to cast first. I say 6' because he will eventually move onto 7', and having a longer rod initially will make the transition easier. I started on a 5' spincast combo and got too used to short rods, and to this day I still am not very comfortable with rods over 6'6". Probably has to do with the way I cast - I got used to short whippy rods so I cast predominantly with my wrist and with one hand. Once he learns how to do the overhead, underhand wrist flick, underhand backhand and the pitch you can probably move him to a baitcaster. Onto baitcasters, since we seem to be discussing them as well... I would look into a mid-tier Daiwa with Magforce Z. If you set the spool tension and Magforce Z right, you can essentially swing the rod hard as heck without really thumbing and still get virtually no backlash. At least, that's what I do with my Fuegos and 3/8 oz. spinnerbaits when shore fishing. I would suggest an Exceler for his first BC.

Catch and Release
Think of it this way - if the small ones don't get taken out, they eat up all the food and the big ones starve. Small bass are almost always more aggressive feeders than large ones. I think pulling out a big bass that should weigh 6 pounds with a sunken belly and an actual weight of only 4 pound would make you cringe even more wouldn't it?

Lead Ban on Fishing Tackle Fails to Pass
If lead does eventually get banned, we can only hope that it will prompt tackle manufacturers to find more efficient methods to produce tungsten fishing tackle and lower prices on them. I wouldn't mind fishing tungsten jigs, spinnerbaits and dropshots - the reduced profile imo works better for spooked fish. My only problem atm is that tungsten jigheads are roughly twice the price of lead ones. If they ever drop down to around 120-140% the price of lead tackle, I'd completely switch over.

So IL Fishes
And I'm smack dab in the middle ;D I'm about an hour away from Clinton and 80 mins from Shelbyville. I also hit up Evergreen Lake from time to time, as well as Walnut Point State Park, which has a little lake that holds plenty of bass.

Dobyns rods breakin??
Phew, I was scared for a moment there. I just bought a Champion crankbait rod a few days ago and the initial post almost gave me buyer's remorse! ;D

New XCalibur Square Bills
I didn't get the 1/2 off thing from Lurenet. They were gonna charge me $7.19 a bait there with minimal selection.

New XCalibur Square Bills
Why wait on TW? Yup. Half-off is quite nice. 8-) ??? What're you talking about? First off, I already put in an order of these cranks this morning from TW. They aren't listed up on the TW site yet, but I ordered by phone and it worked out. I like TW for it its free shipping. There is no BPS close to where I live.

New XCalibur Square Bills
Tackle Warehouse received their first shipment of them today. They said itll take about a week for them to set up the website to offer them. Guess who's calling them tomorrow to try to make an early order?

Cost of shipping rods
I once got a shipment of 3 rods inside one cardboard tube that had a diameter of about 4 inches. Nothing was damaged. The shipping label on the tube had a price on it. I think it was around 24 dollars. I figure as long as you bubble wrap the rods together snugly and pack the tube with extra bubble wrap or soft packing material so that nothing moves when you shake the package, there shouldn't be any issues with stuff breaking.

Dobyns Champion 705CB
Thanks for the input Craiger! Have you thrown any jerkbaits with the 705CB? If so, how well did it perform? I plan on pairing it up with a Daiwa Alphas Ito 103-Ai so that I can throw anything from 1/4 oz to 3/4 oz. cranks and jerkbaits on it. Do you think lighter cranks (1/4oz) would work with this rod? As for deep diving, let's just say I'm glad I'm a better jig fisherman than cranker when it comes to 14-20+ feet of water.

Dobyns Champion 705CB
So I just pulled the trigger on a Dobyns Champion 7' MH cranking rod. Hopefully it arrives soon. I picked it because it seemed like the most versatile one, since TW said that it was made for fishing not only crankbaits, but jerkbaits and lipless cbs as well. Does anyone else have this rod? If so, any suggestions for which baits work really well with this rod? Also, this rod is rated moderate fast action. Would that be acceptable for spinnerbaits as well?

Had a baby girl!
Congrats! Isn't it convenient that you have that pond behind your house with all those hungry aggressive bass? She'll be hooked on fishing in no time!

5" swimbait
I heard some of that stuff has some pretty large cells and isn't good for lures. Any brand you suggest or doesn't it really have a brand? I know AZEK is big, but I haven't really heard of any others. The PVC I picked up from H.D. is dense, meaning there are no voids at all. Minimal air bubbles, almost non existent, but very messy. There is a layer of micro fine white dust on just about everything in my shop. Hope you're wearing some sort of mask to avoid inhaling that stuff! Could lead to some lung problems later in life if you're not careful.

How Tequila Works
I personally find gin to be even worse. Mix up some gin and tonic and they go down like cups of sprite for me. Usually leads to bad ideas and waking up in random places.

Flats and Fat Cranks
Do you sell your crankbaits? If so, where can I get some?
-
Daiwa Aggrest.
If you ever decide to sell that Alphas Ito, you know who to contact. For light baits, I would recommend a Daiwa simply for the ability to adjust on-the-fly with their magforce.

Power Team Tackle Lateral Perch?
Boy, I'd hate to get hung up and lose one of these! And you know what they say about jig fishing - you ain't doing it right unless you lose a couple every outing.

Anyone like the taste of Bluegill?
Teriyaki largemouth is divine! Don't worry CPR guys, I only keep ones between 14" and 16".

Same reels or Different reels?
I usually get my reels when I see a good deal, or when I just want to try out out during my search for "the perfect reel". As of now I'm using 2 Fuego Lefties, a Curado 100D, a Zillion 100HA and an old model Fuego 2000 spinning reel, all mounted on a variety of rods. Sitting in my closet are Fuego righties, Citica D's, a Revo STX and a pair of Trion GX-7's.
