  1. Bass will eat them for sure, but the calorie intake to output ratio has to be terrible. I remember seeing a dragonfly lure that slid back and forth (I can't remember exactly how this was accomplished), but I'm sure some of them were sold and probably even caught some fish. The dragonfly and damselfly flies can be very productive for flyfishermen. Big bluegills and trout love them too.
  2. Sometimes you lose them, nothing you can do about it. What gear are you using? I lost 4 last time out on frogs. Nothing I did wrong, sometimes they just don't stay stuck, especially if you're fishing heavy grass and they get a chance to bury into it.
  3. Perch love leeches in my experience, which is unfortunate when you're walleye fishing and keep catching small perch.
  4. I use the whole spool but I flip it over when the end gets frayed to effectively get 2 spools worth out of 1 spool of line.
  5. Nice looking baits. I'd probably try them even though I've never had much luck with Bagley's.
  6. For those that have asked about this technique I refer to often for catfishing. I made a rough video showing how I do it. I wasn't prepared to do it but the fish feeder went off and looked like the water was boiling from all the fish so I thought I'd take advantage of it. I accidentally said baitcaster when I'm obviously using and always do use spinning gear for this technique. Otherwise, it turned out okay with a very nice channel that never should have made it to the boat.
  7. Not that I've been to a lot of places, but of the places I've been SC was the friendliest by far. I loved the diversity there too. Everyone was just another person there, nobody seemed to notice color, gender, any differences, they all smiled and spoke to each other the same regardless. It really confused my wife coming from a place where everyone looks out for themselves and that's about it. Small towns are usually a good bet. Since we moved out of the city, everyone smiles and waves when you pass them on the road, our neighbors look out for each other and help each other when needed, very different from what I've grown use to and I really like it. Of course, the 3 of us make up .01% of the total population (225 people), so you kind of have to play nice with each other. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lane,_Kansas
  8. Had to be something with teeth or maybe a turtle.
  9. That wiggle on the fall is a big part of the appeal to the bait to me (and the fish). I've even had fish pick it up off the bottom on more than one occasion.
  10. This is the hook on the original head I used. These are the ones I'm currently using until I can get the new Do-It mold designed specifically for the Ned rig. It's model number WRM-6-SLA. The lack of a keeper allows the bait to sit against the head much better to be glued into place.
  11. I'm a big fan of Gliss on spinning gear. I had good luck with Nanofil, but Gliss is better.
  12. Terrible. I couldn't fish a squarebill yesterday because every cast I made I was catching a live zebra, zebra shells, or zebra covered rocks. I've seen the empty shells 6" deep along the shorelines some summers. Forget about fishing anything that touches the bottom on the lakes where they're really bad, it's easier to just take the bait straight out of your box and throw it in the lake.
  13. I've lost well over $100 in baits on more than one occasion. Also, zebra mussels suck.
  14. I use a 6' 2" M/XF straight grip St. Croix Avid for jerbaits and poppers. It's a great rod and the handle is not much longer than a pistol grip.
  15. Yep, anywhere, anytime.
  16. Ethos from Academy. If you have one close by, they're on clearance for $27 here right now.
  17. You could take a soil sample and send it off to be tested to see if it's even capable of holding water. I know people here send it to KSU to be tested. Not sure what the surface acres are, but a LT at my work said he was in 16k to have his pond dug. My grandpa owns a dozer and backhoe so mine should be getting much larger, hopefully around the end of this winter before the spring rains start up.
  18. A shakyhead with a black or redbug magnum finesse worm.
  19. I'd use it for traps personally, but could be a good cranking rod too.
  20. I use a 7' 3" H/F with 50lb braid.
  21. I guess I'm not really understanding the question? You mean it has a small window like the time of day it's effective or just the locations it can be effective? Neither is the case, that's for sure. Some days the fish will be feeding on and near the surface and topwater will be the best way to go from start to finish. This past month has been a great buzzbait bite for me all day. Not only catching numbers, but big fish including my biggest LMB of the year so far. Today was another good day for the buzzbait and a frog as well. The frog produced the largest of the day but the buzzbait was getting more bites, which is pretty common for me. I'd rather fish a jig or plastic than topwater, so it's certainly not just that I like fishing topwater.
