High End Rods and Reels
I'll throw in my 2 cents. In 1974 I got my first BC outfit for Christmas. I was 17 years old. It was a Garcia 5000 reel and a Lews Speed Stick, 5'6" M/HVY pistol grip rod with the alligator grip handle. Man, was I stylin or what? ;D The best thing that's happened to fishing over the years is the competitive nature of tournament angling which is reflected in the manufacturers constantly trying to one up each other in their products. In this age there is a far greater selection of rods and reels available along with a far greater range of price. As RW stated above, the uber $$ rods and reels can't be judged to be X amount better than those products that cost less but it does raise the bar on everything. In other words, even a middle range or low-middle range rod and reel combo will be a worthy choice quite capable of putting plenty of fish in the boat. It's benefited all anglers along with creating lots of confusion for beginning anglers which have so much to choose from but that's what this place is for.

Beatles White Album #0000005 is for sale.
While I had a standard White album with the apple label on black vinyl, my friend had the limited edition white vinyl with the purple capital records label. It was really weird putting a white album on the turntable.

Using online maps for pre-fishing
Did you get the Topo maps and overlays when you down loaded the program. I didn't and it won't allow me to install it in the plug in section. Go here. Watch the video, links are provided for the topo overlays. http://www.another site/ The problem is this. Unless you're looking at a lake close to an urban area where you can use the World Wind Urban area visual feature, most lakes have visuals that are far worse than what Google Earth has thus the topo overlay add on isn't quite as useful. You'll note in the video he is constantly referring to areas on the potomac close to DC. That's great because most of the features are available for that. Move to Toledo Bend, LOZ, Kentucky lake, etc. and World Wind becomes less useful. BTW, those incredibly detailed visuals in MS visual earth don't work within World wind. In fact, when you click on the MS VE icon in world wind to see the visual it opens your browser to MS's VE webpage. There is no topo overlay for MS visual earth. So to sum it up. World wind's visual details for most lakes not near major metro area's are nowhere near as good as Google earths but the topo overlay feature works better. The problem is navigating in WW is a pain. The MS VE add on is a great feature for WW but you lose the topo ability when you use it and the birds eye views aren't available for many lakes. Google Earth has better overall visuals for most lakes but the topo overlay feature works slowly and sometimes not at all. Finally, the topo overlay that allows you to layer the topo map over the visual and adjust the transparency is a add on that is only available for oceans, the great lakes and tidal rivers.

Tip replacements
The Fuji ones in the kits at Wal-mart only go down to 6.5mm. I've found most of my rod tips are much smaller. BPS sells the same Fuji tips but individually. They go down to 5mm in size.

Future move from Oregon
Actually, it sounds more like what heaven is supposed to be like. 2 states I can think of. Virginia is one of our more beautiful states and has a more stable climate year round though it can get hot there. Tennessee would also be worth a look, lots of bass fishing opportunities there. Anything North of the Mason Dixon line has no bass fishing from Dec - Feb due to the cold and hard water. Go to far south and the summers can be steam baths. Another choice would be Springfield, Missouri. Home of BPS headquarters and there are several hundred thousand surface acres of prime Largemouth, smallmouth and KY bass fishing waters less than 100 miles from the city along with Striped bass, Musky, Walleye fishing and trout fishing in streams (if you're into that). Quite a drive to the coast if you still want to Saltwater fish though.

I'm in Love with Black Foam...
I'm curious as to the longevity of these new foam grips. In years past, rods came out with EVA foam grips but they just didn't last. The foam would mat down and lose it's "springiness" and grip. I've got a couple old Lightning rods from the mid 80's and that was my complaint with them. After around 4-5 years of use, the grips became somewhat slick.

pro qualifier rods/reels vs. extreme rods/reels
Extreme reels - Reliable. Good casters. The ITB system does a very good job. New ones should be lubed out of the box as they seem to scrimp at the factory. Pro Qualifier reels - I used the PQ reels that were previously sold. 7 bearings. Another solid reel, no problems. I have no experience using either in a spinning reel. As with any BPS branded product, service is required to be done at BPS. If you fix your own reels the parts department in Springfield is very helpful. Extreme rods - Had a couple 6'6" Mhvy's. Sensitivity was OK. My All stars are so much better and the Extremes are heavier than most other rods in that price range. Like any BPS product, wait for the sales. At $99 total for a combo, you really can't get much lower than that. Pro Qualifier rods - No experience.

I make a motion to accept the muddy minute and archive it for posterior, I mean posterity.

crankbait rods
Probably the best bang for the buck cranking rods are the BPS crankin sticks when on sale. I used to have 3 of them and they were hard to beat for the money I spent on them.

UNSOLICITATED BASS DAILY PLANNER
If you are already a member of BASS be aware, they attempted to send me those daily planners for several years despite the fact I didn't order them. The first year was free. After that they kept coming but then they'd start sending a bill for them. I merely sent the bill back with "I didn't order this" across it in magic marker. Then I just quit accepting them and sent them back as a refused delivery. Just another reason I dropped my membership after 30 something years. >

fresh water gear in salt water
I've sold many Curado B's over the past few years. I've also seen my fair share of what happens to those reels when used in saltwater. Typically, the reel handle corrodes up under the main shaft attachment point and the main shafts will corrode down inside the reel. Shimano's are not immune to Saltwater corrosion by any means.

old Johnny Morris BC
They're actually selling those in the stores? That's actually a 2004 model without the chrome plated finish. You can find those just about every day on Ebay in new or like new condition for far less than $100. It's a 10 bearing model but only had a 6 pin centrifugal braking system. The latest JM Sig reel along with the previous models had dual braking on them.

Need advice in purchasing outboard!
;D Years ago I used to hang out at a marine dealership. A customer brought his new Charger Bass boat back because the thing ran too fast at full throttle, it was scaring him. He still wanted to jam the throttle all the way down, he just wanted to tune back the carb throttles so they wouldn't open all the way up when he did it.

Marines or Army?
Since the idea is to spend time in the military in order to take advantage of the educational benefits after military, you've got to make it to the end of your military duty to do that. The best odds of doing that are the Airforce followed by the Navy, then the Army and last, the Marines. The marines are always the first to hit the beach and most of the time wind up with the most dangerous jobs.

Pitching and Flipping gear
http://www.bassresource.com/fishing/flipping_pitching_fishing.html Here's a link to this sites resources on the topic. There are links to further articles. As for video's? Check with BPS or amazon on bass fishing techniques DVD's. Not sure if there is a specific video on flippin or pitchin but those techniques may be a part of a more broad video on bass fishing. The techniques are different. Flipping is done with a specific amount of line out. You don't use the spool release. Pitching refers to the pitch cast. It's not a long cast though. Usually 10 yds or less. A flippin switch on a reel is not necessary. The equipment involves stout rods of 7' or longer and a reel with a good drag.

Motor noise?
Any engine I've owned from auto, outboard, lawnmower, weed whip, etc, etc. that made loud knocking noises was rarely ever cheap to fix.

boat ownership :)
I've got 2. An 18 1/2 foot Champion and a 12' semi V for smaller lakes.

Looking to buy a Bass boat in the Spring
I would also agree on the Nitro's if buying new. If buying, get one from a independant Nitro dealer and not BPS themselves. Independant dealers normally have someone on staff to make repairs or have an independant craftsman that does stuff like fiberglass work. They're more likely to work out your problems quicker. A BPS store out sources EVERYTHING and the quality of work is lacking and inconsistant so I've heard and experienced from those who have dealt with them. As for the boats themselves? The fit and finish is really lacking. Much of it is noticeable on visual inspection. If the obvious stuff is rather sloppy, I worry about the stuff you can't see like the overall construction of the hull.
