  1. Yep. You'll need a 11' system. Unbolt the steering mech on the other side of the motor. Undo that sleeve bolt on that side of the motor. Tie a stout, 20' or so piece rope to the hole in the end of the steering cable. Undo the cable system from the helm under the dash. Make sure any and all wires that have been tie wrapped to the cable are cut loose. Pull cable through from the console. Clean out the cable channel in the engine before reinstalling. There will probably be some pretty gunked up grease in there. Reverse the process to install the new one. A buddy and a six pack should be all it takes.
  2. Blaine!! What a fish!!! Oh and congrats on the T win. After watching you for a week you've got the persistence to fish tournaments that's for sure.
  3. Bob is the man for sure. Wish I had a my own small lake to play with.
  4. Nice one Mike. PM sent.
  5. Clearly, due to the written stuff that's been unearthed since then, that at least one photo was taken. Not hard to believe back then. It was in the heart of the depression. Not that many had Kodak "Brownie" camera's, fewer still could've afforded a roll of film and even fewer still the cost to process to make some photo's. It's really not hard to understand the lack of hard data about this fish if you realize: Bass fishing as a sport was not realized. There was no multi billion dollar bass fishing industry. There were no bass fishing tournaments. Personal endorsements were not a standard way of advertising like they are now. Camera's were a luxury, no something attached to your cellphone which, BTW, didn't exist either. Nor did the internet, computers, email, television, bass boats, $400 fishing reels or $300 fishing rods. George Perry was scraping out a life for his family in the middle of the depression. It rained that day so he wasn't going to get paid. He decided to fish to feed the family to make up for it. He tied into a monsterous bass. So big he had to go show it off before he took it home and put it in a skillet. The size of the fish was so big an onlooker suggested he enter a Sports Afield contest to win a rod and reel. He had the fish weighed and measured at 2 legitimate places that had no outside interest in the fish other than it was much, much larger than any that had been caught previous. Apparently, a photo existed because a hand written letter by Mr. Perry to the Creek Chub people indicated he had one and they could use it in their advertising for the whole whopping fee of some lures. So far, nobody has ever disproved that the fish existed and that's who the burden of proof lies upon. Unless someone can unearth some evidence of a grand conspiracy by George Perry, a notary in Helena, Georgia along with the postmaster of the Helena post office I'd say this record is firmly set in stone and will only fall if a CA guy can remember to do everything right when he/she finally hooks the next fish larger than 22-4.
  6. Of the SX and STX, the SX was far more finicky and difficult to cast as conditions changed for me. I have no idea why but I really found myself not liking the SX's and using the STX's. Furthermore, neither reel was worth the effort of keeping it adjusted when you were throwing lighter baits in windy conditions or high profile baits that catch air in flight like jerkbaits or lighter spinnerbaits with larger blades. As for the linear braking? Garcia was one of the first to develop mag braking. They had an excellent system that is still used today on another PURE fishing line, the Pfluegers. The linear mag design was introduced on the last LP Garcia reel, the 4007LP. The overall effect on spool rotation of the Linear system is less vs. their older system. Why they went with it is beyond me. There is little if any weight reduction between the two. In order to really feel a difference in the cast, the linear mag must be adjusted more to get any sort of measurable effect. Honestly, if you're an experienced baitcaster the best braking system is centrifugal since spool speed is difficult to control on the initial, spool spin up part of the cast unless you're using a Daiwa which has an interactive mag braking system. You allow your thumb to control the last part of the cast which is where the mag braking takes effect. Firefighting15 managed to do a switch of spools and palm plate ends between an S and a SX. He now has an SX with the S centrifugal brakes. He likes it much better.
  7. You add 6" if the steering cable terminates by a fitting that screws into the tilt bracket on the OB motor. If the cable is bolted to an external assy not attached to the tilt assy of the motor then you subtract 6".
  8. The nice part about jigs is you don't have to break the bank to fish them. I would personally start with some 3/8oz in a couple colors like Black n blue, brown and chart, etc, in a couple different head styles from different manufacturers. Whatever color turns you on really. This time of year I would personally advise the use of pork trailers but for a newbie they can be a pain to maintain during a day on the lake. Start with some chunk type plastic trailers or craws. Again, go ahead and pick colors you like. Then start fishing them. You'll find which ones work best for you as you go along and then your next time to the tackle shop will be more informed. One thing about jigs, the fish you catch are usually nicer fish.

  10. So Mr. Perry, Mr. Page, the proprietor of the store the fish was originally taken to, himself a notary and then the Helena postmaster are all liars? Gotcha. ;D
  11. Usually, not all the DNA strands make it from father to son. In Jr's case, the great racer ones were left back at the station.
  12. So this is your Dad's boat? :-? Help me out here.
  13. 10 1/8 x15 SS on sale for $199. http://www.propmd.com/pc-2787-534-apollo-3-blade-stainless-steel.aspx Same prop on sale here for $173 http://www.wholesalemarine.com/p/MIC-993405-115/ If Your engine is running around 5500 rpm's with your current prop a 15p smaller diameter will spin faster. Going to a 17p will drop your RPM's.
  14. Just a couple things. On a boat the age of yours I'd suggest just getting a new system. A lot of times the helms will be a little sloppy if you just put a new cable on. It's probably a Teleflex system. Find your cable under the dash and there should be some numbers stamped on them every foot or so. Something like SSXXXX10 The last digits usually indicate the cable length. If you're just set on changing the cable you'll need to figure out whether it's an R & P or a rotary. A rotary box will be a circular mechanism with the cable going into the side. A R & P will be a straight bar sticking straight out from behind the dash with the steering cable bolted to the top side of it (usually). Pulling a steering cable isn't that big of a deal. If it's an R & P type. Disconnect the cable from the helm and drop it. Disconnect the cable from the engine. Attach a pretty stout rope about 20' long to the engine side of the cable. There should he hole in the end of the cable where the attachment is made at the engine. Now pull the cable and rope all the way through. If it's rotary, you'll have to drop the helm to unfeed the cable from the helm. After you've done that just follow the R&P instructions above. Note: It may be necessary to pull the engine off the transom to accomplish the replacement. Attach the new cable to the rope. I like to wrap that cable/rope tie with duct tape to make sure there are no tag ends loose that can snag stuff as it's being pulled through. Now begin pulling the rope back through the boat. If you run into resistance at any point, back the cable up a little and then try pulling through again. You want to refrain from forcing the thing through as it's possible you may be hanging up on a wire bundle or harness and you don't want to rip that apart. Once it's through, hook up both ends, reattach the motor to the transom if you had to pull it and the only thing left will be making sure the steering wheel is centered when the boat is going straight. That's sort of an on the water deal you'll have to do later. Warning Make sure you check ALL electrical functions before heading off to the lake. It's not uncommon for wires to get yanked loose or cut during a steering cable pull.
  15. Thinking about pro anglers I'd love to share a boat with and the list comes down to 2. Bill Dance Jimmy Houston OK, there's a few more. I'll throw Mark Davis, Larry Nixon and George Cochran in there as well.
  16. I would strongly urge you to contact Bass Resource member Bob Lusk. http://www.bassresource.com/bass_fishing_forums/YaBB.pl?action=viewprofile;username=607F7E74727F63632525100 Bob was down at the KY lake road trip as a presenter and spoke upon this subject among other things. He is a professional fish biologist that has his own consulting business. I guarantee the man would be a wealth of knowledge on catch and release and it's consequences pro and con.
  17. Will one of you CA guys please, legitimately catch a 22lb 5oz bass and end this thing? Seriously. The world record bass was caught 77 years ago. It was a whole different time and place. Those questioning the record the most, youngsters by and large, can't even begin to wrap their brains around what times were like back then and why the scenario took place in regards to this record fish. I mean really, the guy got a whole fishin rod and reel out of the deal... whoopie.. it wasn't even a dobyns with a steez mounted on it.
  18. What pitch prop are you wanting to run? iBoats has props for suzuki's. http://boatpropellers.iboats.com/Suzuki/65_HP_(1985-1997)_14.00-Pitch_Propellers/360/?session_id=748614121&cart_id=463268888 SS 14p props for around $250.
  19. How about that Chevy truck? "Like a rock, I was strong as I could be "Like a rock, carryin the weight Like a rock... Kee-RACK!!! ;D
  20. Exactly what college would allow some IMO's from authors like T-2000, zaraspook_dylan2 or dock_master 3 as a legitimate source for a research paper? Can you cite a forum thread on a bibliography page these days? :
  21. Magnetic brakes have been around since the first "low profile" baitcasters came out in the early 80's. (Technically, those reels weren't much smaller than the old round reels of the day but they were the predecesors of todays LP reels) At that time most all BC reels had centrifugal brakes (though they didn't call them that). They were normally 2 pin affairs that were on all the time. They were not adjustable though Garcia allowed you to change the size of the brakes. Had those not been on those reels they'd probably have sold very few Baitcasters as casting one with no brakes resulted in a backlash most of the time. That's still true today. The mag brakes were meant to help overcome peoples problem's with spool thumbing towards the end of the cast. It was initially a sales gimmick used to interest more people into overcoming their fears of BC equipment. It worked. Technically, if you're an experienced baitcaster, a cent. brake reel is all you need. Centrifugal brakes come into play at the very beginning of the cast, a time when spool control is very difficult to judge and maintain. The rest of the cast is left up to an educated thumb to make sure your spool rotation doesn't spin faster than the lure is taking out line. A mag break only reel, one that has no centrifugal brake at all, will rely more on adjusting the spool tension knob up higher in order to keep the spool from over spinning on the initial cast. Unfortunately, this also maintains a constant tension on the spool throughout the cast on the spool shaft thus taking away distance potential. The exception to this would be the Daiwa mag braking which is different than most other mag braking. The Daiwa system actually has the mag brake mech interacting with the spool throughout the cast vs most others which have a fixed mechanism. Dual brake reels are basically the best of both worlds. Most guys that use them keep the mag brake turned off for much of the time and only use it when the wind picks up or they switch to a higher profile lure that tends to hang in the air on a cast. For example, I was throwing my dual brake patriarch this past week at KY lake into a stiff wind almost all week AND rarely had to ever thumb the reel. I got very, very few backlashes. They don't guarantee you'll never get a backlash but it's rare when one happens.
  22. As a previous owner of a power drive I can list these as the many disadvantages. 1. Despite the maximizer circuitry for the actual TM saving battery voltage, that advantage is lost when you consider the head is also drawing power from the TM battery just to turn it. 2. Number one wouldn't be such a big deal if the head turning speed was sufficient for all the scenario's you will be faced with in a day on the lake but it's not. The speed is too slow. Increase the TM speed and the head turning speed drops proportionally. Not ideal in situations where precise turning is needed in a hurry. 3. Even though the stow and deploy has finally been improved, it still leaves a lot to be desired. 4. Unless you spend the extra money for the built in transducer, running a 'ducer cable on one of these motors is a pain due to the stow and deploy system. It's a great idea that was never refined for real bass fishing by Minn Kota. It's a good motor for TM only lakes when you need to make a run up the lake and want to fix tackle or rig rods from another part of the boat using either the long cable foot control or the remote control. It's also a useful motor if you do a lot of off shore fishing, trolling or drifting. It's not a motor I would suggest otherwise.
  23. I have listened to those singers, along with Barbara Streisand, Judy Garland, Sandi Patti, etc. etc. She could sing right along side any one of them despite the fact she hasn't had a lifetime of experience nor formalized vocal training or coaching. Seriously, do you really think that Mariah or Whitney actually came out of the box sounding just like they do now? It's about the story and the voice. It's about the audience and judges initial reaction and then what happened after she began singing. It's about a society that judges far too often on outward appearance and not on inward beauty nor talent. It's about form but ignoring the substance. Had this women been even average looking there probably wouldn't even be a Youtube video of the performance. Her story and her magnificent voice is an inspiration and a breathe of fresh air at a time when everyone could use a little of both.
  24. I have 4 of the latest JM signature reels and they haven't let me down. I've also used and or sold many of the extremes and have not had a personal problem with the reels nor heard any complaints from my customers on the reels I sold them. One thing I have noticed on brand new Extreme reels, it's a good idea when taking it out of the box to open the small main gear access door on the front reel bottom and shoot some extra grease onto the main gear. They seem to scrimp a little on lube at the factory.
