  1. Anything with a shallow spool will work best. Tons of good options from diawa. Also a lot of aftermarket shallow spools for reels.
  2. the numbers inside don't matter as much, 6:4 6:8 same thing. The fury's are real nice rods for the money.
  3. Get a nice MH flipping stick. That mh lightening rod can cover spinnerbaits, buzz baits, t-rigs etc. Then just get a medium moderate for crankbaits. If you can only have 3 reels go with 7.1,7.1, and 6.4. You aren't going to toss big crankbaits on that MM so a lower gear ratio isn't necessary. If you plan on building an arsenal of rods then get that 5:4.1.
  4. Been there done that. Bought 2 quantum crankbait rods at a steal of a price and the only reason I kept them is because I gave them a shot. First day out fishing I caught a 7lber on the rod. I think I just kept it around for sentimental value ( 2nd rod was broken by a buddy). Every time I toss that thing I just want to let it fly out of my hands, the only thing holding me back is the reel attached to it. We both suffer from a case of buyers remorse. That being said when I contact Dobyn's about a rod I want to purchase I just ask which model fit my style of fishing. Almost always do they reply with the rod I already had in mind. The only time it gets weird is when considering buying a glass vs. traditional crankbait rod. Just remember if you bust a tip or something they fix it for no charge and it comes back better than new. They'll also send you the parts no charge.
  5. Something like insight genisis and garmin quick chart may change this. Those small lakes with crappy map data may be a thing of the past. Small local ponds might be an issue if you cannot take a boat/kayak out there. It will be cool to see how this affects local tournaments on lakes with bad charts.
  6. Like the ultralight suggestion but I would bump the line down to 2-4lb test for some drag screaming fun. I've played with the zo3 in my shop and its a pretty cool reel. Extra spool and handle included. I've thought about buying one for a future kid of mine but by then they'll probably come out with something better.
  7. When I first started fishing tournament it was pretty cool to start catching shells. You always hear guys saying to fish shell beds and its a good way to find fish. I was snagging small ones and then I ran into one the size of my hand. That was pretty natural but some of the unnatural things I've snagged are a pole, my own lost bait, socks, trash bags, beer bottle, and much more. There's trash everywhere and it really sucks. The coolest thing was a giant metal table. I snagged it in murky water one day and didnt know what it was. I thought it was a metal piece of the dock. When the water cleared the next day I was able to see an entire outdoor table. No others near it to match just right in the water, I'll post a picture down the road if its still there. ^ Couple weeks and the hooks on the spro still didnt rust out. I don't believe in the "hook will rust out" mentality.
  8. Go with the 9 at the console. My buddy got the unit without the gps and when you're running a lake like KY lake without a good gps things get scary. We had navionics on our phones but it was still pretty hairy not knowing if we were exactly above the cut in the channel or dangerously close to the shallows. In normal conditions it was fine to run blind but when the rain hit and you could only see a few boat lengths I really wished we had a solid gps unit.
  9. Walmart, Golf Galaxy, Play it again sports. You can even buy a cheap metal stringer and detach the clips from it.
  10. Had my boss stock a bb1 for this very reason. You always see the 6:4 and up reels in small shops but just a few slow gear ratios. You might as well stick the one reel that was known for it.
  11. I use the berkley digital scale with the grip attachment. It isn't 100% perfect but it gets the job done.
  12. How many parts do they need to change to do that?
  13. I'm somewhat of a purist for gear ratios. I like to have each reel for a specific purpose. That being said I'm not opposed to bumping up to a 7.1 to fish a squarebill. There isn't enough bill to necessitate a low gear ratio. I like being able to keep my crankbaits in the strike zone longer churning the bottom and if that means going with a 5:4.1 with less IPT then that is what I do. I have nothing but good things to say about my bb1pro ps1 and the same with my gen 2 revo winch. If you can find an old gen 2 revo scoop it up and replace the bearings. I'm changing mine if I ever take the time to buy the spool tool.
  14. It doesn't happen much and you're less likely to find them when you buy them one at a time. That being said I once bought DSG out of a certain model of diving crankbait in one color and two of them ran sideways out of the box. IDK if they were produced at the same time or what but it was pretty weird. Like @papajoe222 I will occasionally tune baits to run a certain direction, usually buzzbaits to get them to run under a dock and smack into pylons.
  15. I feel your pain. The pond near my house is normally good for at least one dink and a few good bass here and there. I can't seem to get them to bite yet. I know they are deep but I just can't reach the productive water. I didn't want to bust out the shakey head and wacky rig but that's my best bet for monday. These weather patterns are reeking havoc on the fishing. One day the salmon are up close and the next the only way to catch them is on a power line. I'm ready for summer.
  16. There are plenty of weedless options of senkos you can even bury the hook. I'm not worried about snagging the bottom. Watch how bass feed in clear water. Plenty of times you'll see them follow a bait down and nose it. That little pop can initiate a strike. I don't even consider it a true finesse technique. I've caught bass on a senko with 15lb test powerfishing weedless. To give a tl;dr to my approach : Cast, . . . , close bail, wait, repeat. Insert a pop when you see fit. http://www.basspro.com/Gamakatsu-Wicked-Wacky-Hooks/product/10210191/ http://www.basspro.com/VMC-Wacky-Weedless-Hooks/product/12060205060033/?cmCat=CROSSSELL_PRODUCT_MTv2 http://www.basspro.com/Gamakatsu-Weedless-Finesse-Wide-Gap-Hook/product/58035/
  17. I still don't have faith in straight braid for fishing jigs in open water. That being said have you tried abrazx/invsix? I'm thinking about trying the new flipping line for seaguar but its hard to stray from my tried and true.
  18. Welcome to the boards bud. I would try and contact local clubs and see if they have a youth division. There is a pretty good list of clubs here http://www.bassresource.com/bassfish/bass_fishing_clubs.html . Looks like this club might be close and may be in the process of starting a youth division.

The chartreuse teeny wee craw is by far my favorite bluegill crankbait. When the person I'm taking fishing wants to get bigger gills this is my go to lure. Caught some good bass on it too.
  20. Obligatory " Check here first" post That being said here is how I fish them most of the time. Cast with the bail open Let the bait sink down wait to fall close bail watch line pick up a bit of slack shimmy shake my rod just a bit pop,pop sit, shake reel in repeat If at any point the line starts to move or twitch during the fall you probably have one on.
  21. Heavy jig I would got 765flip dobyns. I haven't used it enough to give it the 100% seal of approval but I did have it in some grass/weeds and it handled it perfectly. I could tell the difference between the give of the grass and the rigidity of a rock. On the other hand the 735c is my go to rod. Everything from light t-rigs to chatterbaits and 3/4 jigs. I even punched with it a bit to try and feel it out. Once you get into the real heavy summer grass you're going to want a heavier rod. I'll give my tentative nod to the 765flip though. It casts jigs very well and the feel is well worth the cost.
  22. Another alternative is to buy the plano bags and mark them with a sharpie. Tube, beavers, senkos, etc etc in their own dedicated spot. http://www.basspro.com/Plano-Elite-KVD-Speedbag-Worm-Files/product/14072703014538/ Some guys also use these http://www.planomolding.com/fishing/stowawayr-utility-boxes/prolatchtm-stowawayr-utility-boxes/2373101
  23. The only time I've had it happen was after 10 hours of straight rain from the time we were at the launch to the time we got off of the water. The internal cuffs add another layer of warmth more so that keeping water from rolling down. I like the internal cuffs because they keep my base layers from touching the end of the sleeve and getting wet. That being said the inside has saved me a few times when I've lipped fish on the side of the boat.
