  1. Get to know a good jig maker and you will get great prices.
  2. Some places you can buy them by the card.
  3. I do this all summer long and have learned from the best. Teach the kids about the equipment before you get on the water. Make knowing what each component is some sort of a game. Also buy the same poles for each child is important, generic zebco 202 combos are cheap and normally the same color. Have the children underhand cast as it will eliminate hooks flying through the air. It's not a question of if you will get hooked it is when so make sure you mash the barbs down on the hook. The simplest rig to run is a bobber , split shot, snap swivel, and snelled aberdeen hook. We use spikes aka maggots because they always catch gills. One of the best things to do is create a "magic" pole. Basically catch a gill and hand it to the child that hasn't caught one yet. Getting past the first catch relieves a lot of stress and they enjoy it more. Usually the child that gets the magic pole ends up catching the most fish when its all said and done. Sunglasses are a 100% necessity along with a throwable cushion just incase someone takes a spill. If you're running into small gills hemostats are a must for removing hooks. If the kids are older set them up with a wacky rig and tell them to hang on.
  4. Looking for a new flipping reel and I have two in shop that I am deciding between. Either a quantum smoke or shimano curado, both reels are 7.1:1 gear ratio. Just cannot decide what I want to get.
  5. I use them when ledge fishing or when I need to keep making a specific cast to a piece of cover. Aside from that I use the gps.
  6. I have used both but don't own either. I have both in front of me at my local shop. The AVS70MLF is better for light finesse rigs. The 69MLXF is a better drop shot rod. The XF gives you more backbone. I'm probably picking one of the AVS69MLXF up for drop shot fishing.
  7. Clinton is usually worth the trip. I've caught some big fish early spring. That being said the hot arm opens up April 1st and that is when tournament season really kicks off. From late March to july there was a tournament almost every weekend. April 17th is the Illini High School Open and I'm sure the argenta tournament is around that time too. You can hit up Rend Lake or even Shelbyville. Anything past Rend and I would just go to KY Lake.
  8. Once online shopping became big fishing shows took a nose dive. Many are good but most of their great deals are gone.
  9. Great gun that you can carry in almost any outfit. It does tend to fly out of the hand if you don't put a good grip on it. That being said the magazine extender does solve that. There really aren't sights on the standard model so having the crimson trace/ viridian laser is a big plus if you can have it. Its a pocket gun designed to save your butt in a pinch. Haven't had an issue with it aside from a little surface rust and needing a new holster.
  10. The rod you purchased was designed for crank-baits, the moderate tip is perfect for them. That LTB is made for power presentations, such as jigs and texas rigs.
  11. 8-10lb invisx. No need to get fancy. If you want to use the reel for topwater just spool 30lb braid with a 10yd fluoro leader and ditch the fluoro when the jerkbait bite dies.
  12. Runners for an otter sled. They'll get chewed up before the bottom of the boat. Also my buddies has used everything from bondo to JB weld to fix holes in their plastic boats.
  13. Try to epoxy these to the bottom. That should reduce drag a little bit.
  14. What about running a battery terminal to the back of your truck with a connector? http://www.summitracing.com/parts/rwc-251053?seid=srese1&gclid=CMnayMnq5MoCFZOBaQodeQMPIA My buddy did this with his truck for his electric winch. That is why coupler locks are a thing.
  15. That boat you posted ( 2015 TRACKER® GRIZZLY® 1860 MVX SC) is more of a work boat / duck hunting boat. Not much storage room or amenities. That ranger is a fishing boat through and through. I would buy the ranger 10X over if it were only going to be used fishing.
  16. I use zoom trick worms and JJ's Magic. Yes it has increased my catch rate.
  17. Just use electrical tape on the spool. If you don't do that just cover the spool completely in one or two wraps it doesn't.
  18. 2500 with a braid leader or like 50/50 braid and 6lb line. I have a 1500 size lexa that I use and I sometimes wish I had a bigger reel, especially for skipping senkos or deep drop shot.
  19. Can't be beat at their price point IMO. They also seem to last a good time. Though most of the guys I have sold them to return within a year to upgrade to a reel with better features.
  20. Looking for an online JDM retailer, let me know what you have.
  21. Hummingbird helix 5 is right around that $400 price range. It gets you down/side imaging and gps. Anything you can do with a down imaging you can do with a side imaging. The side imaging just makes it easier to see off to the side without having to roll over the cover and spook fish. There is an advantage to the SI but I wouldn't say its necessary. The GPS is the most important part though. It gets pretty annoying draining a phone battery to figure out exactly where you are on a contour line. At any rate my buddy has used this website in the past to purchase his units. He had no issues but I'm always skeptical of cheap deals/ markdowns online. http://universalmania.com/humminbird-859ci-hd-di-combo/ http://universalmania.com/humminbird-698ci-hd-si-combo/ http://universalmania.com/humminbird-698ci-hd-si-kvd-nav-combo-side-imaging-tm-transducer-kvd-edition/
  22. I've had issues with both companies reels so both aren't perfect. That being said both were out of warranty so I had to fix them myself. My first gen 2 stx had an issue with the tension control nob and casting brakes. I lost a screw trying to fix the gen 2 in the field so I basically ruined it. I wasn't able to fix it but I was able to trade a gen 2 for a gen 3 at the dealer it was purchased from. The gen 3 stx had some casting issues after a season but cleaning fixed the issues. After further use the cast control nob no longer had the audible click and did not engage until it was about 85% screwed down so casting anything below 1/2 is a task and now the thumb bar does not engage 100% of the time. It is gritty and worn out, a new thumb bar and spacers may fix it. I'm debating fixing it but might just get a new reel. As for the lews tournament pro the issue arose from a bad bearing. Replaced it and its good as new. I have another gen 2 stx and winch that are bullet proof. I would buy a gen 2 revo over a gen 3 any day. That being said I am strictly sticking to lews as none of my other reels had issues.
  23. From my perspective they pretty much cost the same. $2.99 per my average jig plus trailer comes out to $3.80. For one Texas rig of the same weight it will cost me $3.72. You can find junk jigs just like you can make cheap t-rigs. Cost aside a jig ,with the same plastic, is more versatile than a texas rig. The advantage to a jig is being able to get the stand up action of the claws and the undulations of the skirt. Keeping a jig in one spot and presenting a defensive posture to a bass has caught thousands upon thousands of bass just like the dragging or hopping of a t-rig has.
