  1. TOW will do you more good than anything if you've already done the you tube stuff. Not familiar with the 788 but it might be hard for anyone to distinguish the difference. Go with someone or have someone go with you that knows how to read them. SE Kansas grass grower
  2. My 53 has a GT20 and the others have the GT52. The dedicated downvu crystal issue came about from the Navico lawsuit, which Garmin finally won a couple months ago. Best discussion and explanation can probably be found at thehulltruth.com boards. I can't really tell much difference between the transducers, but I rarely fish over 20' and never over 50'. 3. I think the 2d and the DownVu are as good or better than Hummingbird. I do think the birds have a better SideVu. I'm anxious to see what Garmin comes up with now that the DownVu lawsuit is settled. SE Kansas grass grower
  4. I test new marine products for Garmin, so I am somewhat biased. I'm not on their payroll so I am totally honest with them when I test. The absolute very best thing about Garmins is the ease of operation. I'm old and not very tech smart. All the units I've tested are so easy to navigate through the menus. If your lakes are mapped by Garmin their cartography is great. If not, you can use QuickDraw while you fish and map the lakes yourself. The Panoptix is incredible!! Crappie and other schooling fish is like video game fishing. It's also great when you have submerged vegetation and submerged timber. Finding brush piles in front of docks is awesome because you don't have to run over them or beside them to find them. You can look forward while you're fishing and see them coming up. 5. Garmin 1042xsv and Garmin 53dv at the console. Garmin 73dv with Panoptix on the trolling motor. Getting something else on the front end later this year. Not sure what, yet. Fish a weekly jackpot and a couple tournaments a year. Pleasure fish quit a bit. SE Kansas grass grower
  6. Might look into the Garmin Striker 4 portable. https://buy.garmin.com/en-US/US/p/543740 SE Kansas grass grower
  7. You should be able to adjust it to see your lure drop. If it's dropped right under the transducer. SE Kansas grass grower
  8. Just start with factory settings and 'play' with it . The best thing about that unit is that it is sooo easy to use. MENU, BACK, and HOME are your friends. SE Kansas grass grower
  9. Another vote for improper transducer mounting. SE Kansas grass grower
  10. At Big Hill I would put in up north under the bridge. Look on Google earth to find the bridge, and you can launch a small boat or yak easily on the west side of the bridge. Put in and go north. Lots of good fishing up there. Find the opening to the pond on the west side about a half mile up and fish that pond. SE Kansas grass grower
  11. Actually there's about 50 Kansas lakes loaded. And yes, a lot of the smaller lakes aren't. The QuickDraw is a nice feature. SE Kansas grass grower
  12. Get the biggest screen you can afford, especially for the front deck. You are only a foot or two from the one on the console. SE Kansas grass grower
  13. Hit Wolf Creek Friday. What a fun day!! 78 at the outlet and 58 at the dam. Caught 2 drum, 1 walleye, 4 largemouth, 12 smallmouth, and 14 wipers. Most were along the dam with a lipless Livingston and a Shad Rap. Everyone was catching on the dam. SE Kansas grass grower
  14. I think SideVu is just another tool to use. It isn't the answer to everything. But another tool to use, like Panoptix, ClearVu, standard sonar, gps maps, etc. SE Kansas grass grower
  15. I've got the 73dv with Panotpix on the front deck, a 1042xsv and a 53dv at the console. Great units. SE Kansas grass grower
  16. Just got back from Fork. Stayed at Lake Fork Marina, again. Rooms have always been nice but they are in the process of remodeling all the rooms. They are really nice now. And the staff is super friendly, especially the owner. SE Kansas grass grower
  17. Awesome fish. SE Kansas grass grower
  18. Yep. SE Kansas grass grower
  19. Hell yes, go to Texas. Don't have to go to south Texas. A bunch of really good lakes east of Dallas. SE Kansas grass grower
  20. They were just kicking in before this last crappy front came through. Water temps were up into the lower 50's on bone and cedar. Bass were really starting to hit moving baits, but now?????????????
  21. I've got a 73 up front and a 1042xsv at the console. That 1042 is huge! On the console the 73 was plenty of screen. When I moved it to the front, it was fine. Even with Panoptix. You can run split screen without problem. The only problem I can see would be if you ran Panoptix and tried to split screen it with something else. Just don't think it would be quite big enough. 22. I would definitely get a mount plate. I've made several out of an old commercial cutting board. They work great and cost virtually nothing. SE Kansas grass grower
  23. Saturday-Work then Cedar Creek by 8:30 Sunday-Work then Bone Creek by 8:00, will be playing one pocket and drinking beer by 1:00 SE Kansas grass grower
  24. If I catch another 10, y'all and the rest of the free world will know it! SE Kansas grass grower
  25. Finally got a few at Cedar Creek yesterday morning. Had to quit about eleven to play golf. Should have kept fishing, played like poo. Couple on a small crank, and the rest reeling a spinner bait, then killing it. Hit it on the kill. SE Kansas grass grower
