Barlow's Tackle
Thanks for the replies. Yeah I checked it on mapquest and Barlow's Tackle is over 1,000 miles away. If I was to travel via car it would take 19 hours to get there lol! But I know they fly the stuff up to Richmond Airport and then it is loaded onto a UPS truck and dropped off at our PostOffice where a local UPS man drops it off at the house. I am anxious to make my own worms. This will be the first time I ever make a lure from scratch.

Barlow's Tackle
I made an order last night from Barlow's tackle. I ordered the plastic worm making components (melting pot, the molds, color, scent, glitter and plastic). They are stationed in Texas and I live in Virginia. When can I expect the arrival of the UPS man? Has anyone ordered anything off Barlow's? And if so was your stuff good quality? Can I expect good quality? and how many business days per-say will it take for the order to be complete? Thanks for any feedback! 8-)

skirt help
The skirt material is called 'silicone' you can purchase the material online at either Barlowstackle.com or Jannsnetcraft.com or lurecomponents.com. You can search for that certain color or you can order different colors and patterns and make your own combination. good luck!

Getting soft plastic to float-anyone tried this?
For those who pour their own lures, try adding some styro-foam into the worm. Not only does the excess salt cause it to sink but also the hook will sink it too.

Your Favorite Flippin' Weed/Lily lure?
I usually either throw a chatter-bait or spinner-bait and weive it in between the pads or weeds or for plastic lures I use a YUM Dinger or senko wacky style, or if it is real thick vegetation I will texas rig worms.

detecting softbait strikes
If the soft bait is rigged weighless all you have to do is watch the line. The line will sink slowly and it will appear as it dissappears one inch at a time. If a bass takes it the line will twitch and then run, or it will move to the side. If weighted, I let the lure sink all the way to the bottom and basically add tension (pull on the line until tight) and then feel for taps or tugs. If there are either of these I will set the hook, if not then I hop the lure and continue. There are free swings in worm fishing. If you get snagged, it happens. I've fished one tournament here at Motts Run Reservoir and it has deep water and tons of wood. I was using a texas-rigged worm and when fishing in the wood I was like you, couldn't tell the difference. If I would have free swung I would have won that tournament. Because of all the hits I had I would have easily had my limit when the guy who got first only had two fish total weight of 5 pounds. I hooked into a nice 2 pounder but he jumped and spit the hook. If anything go to a pond or two with vegetation or wood and practice. With time you can only get better! 8-)

Gamakatsu Finesse Hook
I use 2/0 for ZOOM Finesse worms I would reccomend 3/0 just like tipptruck said.

Monster crappie
Well if he was 17 inches then his weight would be 4 pounds. But since he is a couple of inches shy (probably around 13 or 14 inches), the weight will be around 2 pounds. Nice catch none the less! 8-)

pegging bullet weights
Here's a plastic peg that a lot of guys use. All you do is feed the skinny end in and then pull it to peg it, and trim the excess... http://images.google.com/imgres?imgurl=http://rs.***.com/tac/ProductImages/TBPI.JPG&imgrefurl=http://www.***.com/descpage-TBPI.html&h=300&w=300&sz=4&hl=en&start=2&um=1&tbnid=4VXcLgPtLkAT1M:&tbnh=116&tbnw=116&prev=/images%3Fq%3Dweight%2Blure%2Bpegs%26svnum%3D10%26um%3D1%26hl%3Den

Expanding lure collection
I've got a few packets of ribbit frogs. The senkos are in substitute with the YUM Dingers, got some slug-gos Personally I am not a big tube fisherman, but I don't doubt there effectiveness. I've been looking around and deciding on what I would like to add. Thanks for all the suggestions! 8-)

Lake Orange (5-25-07)
[move]Lake Orange (5-27-07) [/move] Me and my bro in law, Chad hit Lake Orange again today. I caught 3 bass and he caught a smallmouth bass and a chain pickerel, not to mention a hook in the thumb... He was trying to get the hook out of the small mouth, when the fish struggled and slipped, his rapala jointed dug one trebel hook deep into his thumb to where the barb was embedded. He just went to the clinic to get it removed. We will hit again this evening. All in all for 4 hours of fishing (6-10) it was productive. Had a blast and since it is Memorial Weekend there was a few ( :) people out. god bless all and tight lines! 8-)

Lake Orange (5-25-07)
Took my boat out again, last time was back in February when we had one of those warm days. This time I went from 4:00pm until 8 so about 4 hours of fishing. I caught 6 and missed like 4 or 5. I caught one off of a shad colored DT-6 and the rest where on a wacky rigged finesse worm. I had one hit the popper but he jumped off. I fished the shore under overhanging bushes, etc. whatever would provide shade and hit logs, beaver huts, etc. I caught my first fish not 10 minutes after launching, it was a measely 8" or so. All in all it was a fun day and a good way to pass the time. My biggest was a pound and he died on the way to the house, I hate it when that happens! I released all the other bass into the pond. So we now have 59 bass in the pond. I might head back out maybe this weekend. Depends on my schedule. My aunt and uncle came up from Georgia and they are spending the weekend with us. They are going to Charlestown, WV to gamble tonight and then catfishing at Potomac tomorrow (but they won't bring me... :'( >; but it's ok! Cause I will probably go bass fishing!! ;D 8-)) I am heading back out tomorrow morning around 6:00am with my Bro in law. I will keep you guys informed of our success! 8-) God bless

Lily pad question?
How dense are the pads? If they aren't too thick try to wacky rig either a YUM Dinger or a finesse worm (Culprit or ZOOM of your choice) and cast or pitch to pockets in between pads, let it sink a little and watch your line, if you see any movements, set the hook, if not let it sink to the bottom and then gently pop it a few times and let it sink again. If nothing then reel up and recast to another pocket. If this doesn't work try either a popper or chugger. From the sound of it they don't hit fast moving lures in the weeds, this is because the pads are restricting their movement. Try a slower lure. My reccomendation would either be a t-rigged worm, wacky worm or other slow presentations. If you aren't familiar with working plastics then helicopter a spinner-bait or try a jig. Experiment and see what gets them to strike! If they won't hit one lure they may hit another, and also try different presentations and colors. good luck! 8-)

bass eyesight
Absolutely! Try to wear clothing that blends in with your surroundings (mainly the sky) if it is a overcast day wear white, or whichever to blend, if it is a clear day wear blue or other colors to blend in. Sometimes they hit a lure (depending on how real it looks) such as a worm or crawdad (plastic). Be selective on your equipment, I would use a light line (less visible) and natural color lures. Chances are the bass may hit. Try different things to entice them to strike. good luck! 8-)

Wildfires
At my aunt and uncle's house in Maryland we had a forest fire envelope the woods 2 miles away from her house back in 2001 or 2002. It was scary and that night they had wind. It was in Cumberland, Maryland. I remember that day and I will never forget it! It took rescue and firetrucks 10 hours to extinguish it, with a little help from the rain. Apparently an idiot driving in the National Forest (my aunt and uncle live right on the national forest) threw out a cigarrette and since the area was dry at the time (it was summer). Everything lit quickly and kept going... Forest fires are scary and they are to be taken seriously! Hopefully your fire goes out with no problem. I will keep your and your family's safety in my prayers! God bless 8-)

The Show "Survivorman"
Yep, I catch that show as much as I can. It is very informative and also helps people what to do in case they get lost. The multiple conditions and environments he encounters are some conditions that many people get lost in. And with people tooning in, they know what to do in case they get lost in the area they live in. I went out last summer and went out with really nothing into the woods by my house and built a shelter with my bare hands. It was tough work and I broke up a sweat (which according to surviving experts is deadly (hypothermia can settle in the cold, loss of water, etc.) I built a really good shelter out of ceder boughs and sticks and it lasted for around 4 weeks until a big storm came with 50 mph winds blew it down. I basically did a hut. There was 4 pines in a square and they had branch nubs 4' above the ground, so I took a few sticks and put one on each nub and connected it to another tree until I had a square of sticks hanging on the trees. Then I took and layed branches and lined them on top of the square (for the roof) and then covered them up with boughs, leaves and whatever I could find. Then I took and broke branches and stood them up vertically for the walls and did that all the way around and left a little entrance. Covered that all up also with boughs. the entire thing was 5' long by 4' wide by 4' high, and it took roughly 5 hours to complete. I was neat and it lasted a little while. It rained one day and when I went out after the rain to check it out the ground was soaked but inside the hut was fairly dry. Making a shelter can be fun and at sometimes essential! ;D I think I might spend a night or two in the woods and eat whatever I can find. That would be a cool experience! God bless 8-)

Fishing in the wind...
On windy days I normally move to either hard lures (crankbait, spinner-bait, etc.) or texas rigged plastics (with the bullet weight). A tip for the wind is go fish on a bank that the wind is blowing into (wind blown banks), if you find any cover or boat docks there fish them thoroughly. It is a tough condition, but sometimes it can be a good time to catch bass. Most people stay home when it's windy... For me I like a slight wind (5-10 mph) on an overcast sky. Another tip is when the wind is blowing located a log or other cover that stretches out. Fish the side that is opposite of the side of the wind. This basically creates a wind breaker. The first place I got in windy weather is a nice deep cove with trees for wind breakers. Yeah the winds have been blowing here in Va, it was blowing pretty good today but we still had success at our club's tournament.

Out with dad on Lake Anna

Out with dad on Lake Anna
hey all, went out today right after school to Lake Anna. Dad had his Nitro boat in the garage all winter and we decided today would be a good day to go. We launched out of Christopher Run which now has a ramp fee of $8! It used to be like $5! Dad really didn't try to fish, he threw my spinner-bait a little but he said he was just fiddling around more than fishing... ;D Anyway, we headed up past Sturgeon Creek and found us a nice cove on the right side. And to my luck it had tons of stumps and laydowns. Good place to fish! It was shallow (6 feet max) but I had confident. Pitched around my Wacky Rigged Yum Dinger (Junebug) and I looked over and seen this HUGE Stump! It had the sun on one side and I seen on the back side it was real dark (I couldn't see down behind it and I was in 3 foot of water). So I felt like something would be there, pitched it in the shadow and it went down 1...2...3 (seconds) and then I seen my line pick up and start moving. "There's one" and set the hook. Small bass but good none the less (1/2 pound). We then worked the cove, and then got tired of it and headed out and worked the bank comming into the cove, which it also had good stumps, etc. Fished along there and still with my Junebug Dinger Wacky pitched it by two conjoined stumps and I felt weight. Popped the hook and there was a 1 pounder! Not 20 minutes after the first one. Here's the pix. PS: The pix is after we got home, I forgot the camera when we left lol!!! ;D Good, beautiful day...but windy... Nothing beats a day with your old man!
