I have yet to take my boat out there and not really sure I even want to. There is so much debris and other junk in that river with my luck i'd take out my lower end unit. I've probably donated $100 worth of lures and tackle in that river..lol. Shoot me a pm if you ever want to meet up out that way. Biggest smallie from there to date was about 15.5". Smallest........about 6".

I've fished by the Carpentersville dam a few times. Never had a lot of luck there, so I fish down by Elgin more so. Managed some smallies and a musky at that spot. As far as ponds and lakes, honestly not a whole lot around this area. You can try Bode Lake on Bode Road in Streamwood. Most places in the area a slammed with people when the weather is decent.

The reels are 1 or 2 season old. I'm specifically referring to the main gear that the drag washers sit in. It looks like a combo of the fiber washer and grease that makes a dark spot onto the gear itself. Not sure how crucial it is to get these cleaned up but from what ive read or seen, most guys have them sparkly clean.

This might be covered else where, and I'll dig deeper, but does anyone have a good video or instruction sheet on how to properly polish using a Dremel. I think I am either way to timid with mine, or I am not doing it right. I get a nice smooth shiny surface, but I don't seem to remove all the blemishes.

I think you'll get a number of guys here who would agree that the Avid series is a great rod. I think Roadwarrior uses that same Avid rod too if I'm not mistaken. I would definitely go to a store that has one and at least feel it out. Like you said, I don't use spinning gear that much but times that call for finesse, you can't beat a good spinning reel set up.

I use a St Croix Avid 6'8" Med/XF on about 95% of my soft plastic finesse techniques. I don't throw spinners or cranks with it ever though. I am more of a power fisherman so finesse isn't my strongest but I love my finesse set up. Paired with a Shimano Symetre 2500FJ You'll be just fine at Medium power or Medium Light. I've caught musky on medium action rods that handled them with no problems.

I just started ripping my reels apart this winter for the first time. For those who don't already do it and want to, just be organized and don't cut corners. Take pictures if you have to help yourself remember and use your schematics. I'm really enjoying taking my stuff apart and cleaning them thoroughly, and at the same time realizing there is a great NEED for it too. Mike from DVT, JFrancho and a few other have helped me through the course of doing some of my stuff, lending tips to help the process.

All went back together great. Im concerned with the drag. I knew it was getting weak but with the drag cranked all the way down, I can pull line off the spool with relative ease. I don't ever use a full drag setting but still I think this will cause some issues. Are drag parts even around for this reel? Or should I toss it and move on?

I've never really dabbled into adding scents but I had to place an order for some grease through TW, so I grabbed a bottle of JJ's in the clear. I like my plastics to maintain the colors I buy so I wasn't interested in the dye. I'm going to give it a try this weekend and see if this really is "magic" or not.

Email Quantum first to see what they say about it. If they're no help, go get your cash back and apply it to something else. Perhaps it was on sale for that exact reason, being it's defective. Sale items sometimes are final, so you'll need to check into that as well. Let's hope that's not the case.

I ended up using Mikes "90degree bobby pin" and J Francho's idea to go in between the worm reel and got it out no problem. Thanks a ton guys. Just waiting for my shipment of reel grease to get here and I'm done. This reel was FILTHY but looking brand new now. 50 degrees in Chicago today through Saturday, unheard of for January ........think i'll be heading out for a few hours this weekend to see my results of this tune up.

Thanks Mike. I tried to whack it a few times last night but maybe I was being too gentle. I appreciate your help and honestly if I had the cash to spend I would send it all to you. Times are tight and I got twins to feed. For now it's "do-it yourself" with the fishing stuff. The flipside is that I'm actually enjoying taking the reels apart and doing it myself.

Here's another bump in the road. How do I remove the line guide pawl shown in the picture? I can not figure it out. My worm reel is filthy and needs to be removed but can't seem to figure this out. I flushed some of the bearings on this reel and surprisingly they weren't that dirty at all. The reel has been through hell and back. This is my project before I decide to do all my Shimanos and higher end stuff.

Given an opportunity to fish with anyone on the Pro level would be a treat. If I had a choice KVD or E2.

I have a relatively cheap pair from Cabelas with polarized amber lenses and they get the job done. They were $20-$25 and have lasted me the last 3 seasons. If I buy a $100+ pair of glasses I'll either sit on them or drop the in the lake some how. I've never worn or had a really expensive high end pair of shades so I don't know if there is a huge difference or not. I just can't bring myself to spend that much money on glasses.

I got the switch back in. So that is solved. Now my issue is how do I remove the side plate spool shaft bearing? I took the clip out but the bearing is down about an 1/8 inch and there is no way to grip it.

I label all my boxes. Sharpie on the sides.

RM, I emailed them already and they sent me the Accurist 501cx diagram. So you're correct, the schematic is no longer available. This is the only reel I pitched the box and the schematics when I bought it. What quantum sent is very closely related so hopefully I can figure it out from this. Thank you for the response.
