  1. I really dont have one . I'm pretty good at rotating through the lures that I think are appropriate .I use to be hard headed about Texas rigs bot not any more .
  2. I need to use frogs more this year . I've tried them in the past and have had very limited success but have done pretty well with a Stanley Ribbet .
  3. Yesterday , found a Rebel Excalibur Shad R .
  4. Whatever they can cast easily . A light weight does no good if they cant chuck it out there .
  5. Me too except mine was red . I bought it at a corner grocery store .
  6. One rod and a few lures in my pocket or sometimes I'll where a fishing vest .
  7. Its not really a game but I bought a digital scale that logs weight .So I weigh my first five fish over 12 inches then continually try to up the weight .I find myself fishing for a bigger bite , especally late in the day .
  8. My uncle is another one who struggles with a jig . I believe its just a mental thing .I'm catching them , hes not. Just fish it like a Texas rig . The bites feel the same . If the bass are not hitting it , dont force it , switch , but if you can fish a Texas rig , you can fish a jig .
  9. I wish I had a picture but will try to explain it .A lure I use in heavy current below a dam is a 1/8 ounce jighead with just the body of a grub so that it doesnt extend past the hook . Then I use a spinner blade on a swivel as a trailer . I was able to cast it with baitcasting gear and caught lots of species of fish including both largemouth and smallmouths . It worked great in strong current .
  10. Do you think its easier for northern tournament anglers to go south where largemouths are dominant or southern tournament anglers to head north where smallmouths are the main focus ?
  11. I've been fishing behind some people bass fishing this year but they were just out for a day of fishing and not as enthusiastic about the sport as me . When I show them the bait I'm catching fish on , they are surprised that its the same thing they are using . Its just attention to small detail and putting the lure in high percentage spots , keeping it in the strike zone.. . It comes naturally to someone who has done it for a long time , not so much for the occasional angler .
  12. Throw it back . I've seen the game wardens enforce some rules that were questionable . A friend of mine who is not a fisherman took his two kids fishing . They only caught a few fish but put them on the same stringer . Game warden ticket him for it .
  13. If walleye were as prolific as bass around here , I would be chasing them most of the time . They are good . I had yellow perch once and man , I think that was the best tasting fish I ever had .
  14. Thats how I have held a rod all my life . Learned it jig fishing for crappie and continue to do it to this day for bass . Back when I started bass fishing the rods are not like they are now. They were short fiberglass and just were not sensitive . I held the line to feel the bite . Then when graphite rods came onto the scene , I could tell what brand of beer can my sinker was hitting .?
  15. I drink Natural Light . 30 packs are like 17 bucks . My son doesnt drink much but his friends sure do . Woke up early to go fishing , went to drop a six-pack in the cooler and they were all gone . The stores cant sell them til like 8 in the morning . I was pretty upset to say the least . .
  16. My first texas rig bass , I added a black spinnerbait skirt behind the weight to imitate a jig . A guy told me he was catching them on jigs and I didnt have any so I improvised .After that I was using both jigs and T-rigs , it didn't matter . Like already stated , I caught a thousand fish on crappie jigs before I got serious into bass fishing . I knew what a light bite felt like .
  17. I dont keep large bass . I try to get the smallest over 15 inches I can or the longest just short of 12 inches .I didnt keep a single bass last year or this year . I kept a 5 lber a few years back because it wasnt going to make it , gill hooked rather badly . One has to be careful though , keeping fish close to the legal limit , those game wardens will try very hard to make them measure illegally . Its better to keep a seventeen inch bass than one that barely measures fifteen . They are renewable and they are all going expire .
  18. Dont you ever take a day off from fishing ? Im going after crappie this weekend but may add to my bass total . Plans usually change once on the water .
  19. Ive been using hand poured baits with blades robbed from other baits . I have caught a couple hundred bass on 1/2 ounce hand pours with Excalibur blades and Terminator skirt . Its time to transfer blades to a new bait . They only last for 50 to 100 fish before the arm breaks .
  20. I like to use Weightless Yum Dingers because they have enough weight to cast with 17 lb test mono and baitcasting gear . A person might have to reel in a six lb bass enveloped in several lbs of weed depending on the "type " of vegetation . So a heavy hook is necessary too .
  21. I haven't been to the big reservoir yet but am this weekend . My wife's idea , memorial day , sheesh . The water is high , rising and muddy . Thunderstorms all weekend .There will be crowds fishing and boating anyways . The lake is getting a reputation for monster crappies. Last week a 3.6 lber was weighed in at a tourney .I've seen several pictures of three lbers this spring . I may have to do some crappie fishing . A small lake I've been fishing has had little pressure and most who are bass fishing are not as enthusiastic about it as I , so most dont know how to go about catching bass in chocolate milk and heavy chara algae . I love fishing those conditions and smaller reservoirs far from St Louis have some excellent fishing . Where I live there is a lot of good bass fishing around if a person would just open their eyes . Big bass boats are not needed . Small craft's are the ticket . I carry an elec motor , battery , portable depth finder that I rigged up and a strap down seat . Limits of 15 inch plus bass are the norm .
  22. I started using a swimbait instead of a skirt on buzzbaits two years ago . There are two advantages . They cast easier with the added weight and it retrieves slower because of the increased drag . It seems to get better hookups too but that just may be wishful thinking . The disadvantage is I pour my own and they are designed for skirts . I have to super glue the baits on .
  23. Theres going to be a lot of flooded wood and vegetation in most waters . Use lures that navigate through wood and vegetation well . Spinnerbaits , jigs , Texas rigs ,and buzzbaits come to mind .
  24. A lake I fish the conservation dept has a sign that instructs to harvest bass under the slot . A few years back the Cons. dept raised the creel limit to 12 fish and waived the length limit on one lake. They were begging people to keep bass . I went up and fished for three days and brought back 72 fillets . They must have got the population thinned down to where they wanted because now its back to a slot limit and six fish creel .
