From what you listed a medium rod is just fine. A 5” weightless senko weighs 3/8oz. A sk 1.5 crank weighs 3/8oz. A 1/4oz jig with skirt and trailer will come in close to that also. Medium light wouldn’t be my choice. Phenix makes some nice rods in the bass recon 2 series if that’s what you’re set on though. The 713 is a medium light. I had it and the 682 which is a light power rod. I used it (682) for lures 5 grams and under. Bfs as it’s referred to, but that’s not what you’re talking about with the baits listed above.

Please explain what super tuning the main/pinion gear is. Are you referring to polishing them? There are some internal parts that can be polished up to result in a smother reel but I’d steer clear of the gears themselves. When in doubt send it to a pro like Ian Shields or Bryan at Tackle Trap.

I’ve used a water bubble for years on a 7’6 spinning rod. I always use a swivel but not always a bead. Works well for trout and panfish.

Be aware that Mike’s doesn’t stock a lot of what they list on that site. They are also in Canada so shipping is pretty high. They’ll just order it from Daiwa for you and then send it. Tackle Trap will do the same but there’s a good chance it’s in stock also. Plus they’re in AL so you’ll have it quick. Not to mention they’re great to deal with. A new sideplate for my 1st gen steez was about $35 without shipping.

Daiwa Alphas 103/105, Sol 103, Megabass Zonda series reels will all accept the Alphas sv 105 spool.

On light baits spinning is way easier and used by most, but you will have a hard time skipping a 1/2oz jig on a spinning rod. With x plastic trailer it’s too heavy for it. Unless you have a heavy power spinning rod and that goes against what most people are using a spinning rod for in bass fishing. You think is BP is skipping a jig in the elite series with a casting reel he’s doing it to push high priced tackle? No, he’s doing it because it’s the proper tool for the job. Aside from lighter baits you will see the pros and others using casting gear. Why, because it’s the right tool. That’s what Tom didn’t mention is his statement above. He just went ahead and said that it wasn’t designed for that. That’s totally false. He then back pedaled a bit and said lighter baits, in which he would be correct. Search the web and see how many videos you see of pros using a spinning rod to skip a frog or a jig with. I’ll bet dollars to donuts it’s hardly any. Those guys are out to catch fish and cash a check to earn a living. If there was a better choice then that’s what they’d be using to do it with.

Please explain WHY it isn’t designed for that? Nowhere on earth has it ever said a casting reel isn’t designed for skipping. If I’m skipping a frog under docks I would need a stout spinning rod to handle that weight. You picked 3 examples and my guess is they were skipping lighter baits. Thus the spinning rods. I know for a fact Dean skips baits with a casting reel. What about the other 500 pros who use a casting rod? I guess that means they’re doing it all wrong since it’s not designed for that. They’re tools as you said and at certain times you use a different tool. That’s Dean in the video.

I throw a good amount of Megabass hardbaits. I’m not afraid to lose them but in my head I’m hoping that it doesn’t happen. Some of the 110’s aren’t the off the shelf colors you can just pick up. I’ve had a few days that I lost $100 worth and it does suck.

The sv spool certainly will make it easier but it’s not magic. You still have to learn the proper technique for angle and speed. It will help ease the learning curve though. Tatula sv would be a fine reel to start out with.

I’ve yet to hear a single negative comment about that reel. Everything has been nothing but positive. I’m friends with quite a few Daiwa users, and I am one myself.

Please do not listen to the “add a drop of oil to the bearings before each trip” suggestion. That is extremely overkill. Bearings do need cleaned/flushed and re oiled (1 drop) but only a couple times a year. That will vary based on how often you fish but if you only fish a few days a week it’s plenty.

I owned a 705cb and the tip was too soft for me. I actually ended up using the champ 704 for squarebills. Still has a soft tip but not as quite as much of a noodle feeling to it. The thing about fishing is we all have our preferences to what we prefer to use.

I used to run bocas but there are better options for not much more money. A lot quieter and a much better quality bearing overall. Zpi Sic YT Fusion HH air hd

I still need to try the R+ spool. I’ve yet to buy one for some odd reason. *Edit - I will finally be trying one. I just bought the R+ inductor assembly from a guy to put on my ito 103 spool.

Either Hd or sic would be fine for 1/4oz. I’ve used them both for that weight range. Chat with Bryan (spankey) about the oil. I think it’ll be fine to use on the sic’s. I can’t imagine why it wouldn’t be.

Never tried any aftermarket stainless bearings. I ditch the stock bearings right away. Air HD’s are close to the Zpi Sic’s as far as being quiet goes. Slight nod to the Zpi’s.

I have a good friend with a mill,tig welder, and a lathe. He likes to make stuff lol. The spring swap does help but the longer inductor just slows the spool down too much for me. Hoping the removal of some material helps that out. By theory it should. Not as much of the inductor will be in the magnetic field so it won’t be as braked. Didn’t know how much to take off though. I used the zillion sv tw inductor as the baseline since that spool performs great in that reel. No harm done if it doesn’t work out.

Been playing a bit also. I just had 40 thousandths milled off the stock SV103 inductor to shorten it up. Hopefully it frees up the spool a little bit from being so over braked. Same spool as the Steez sv103 minus being made of G1.
