Tie those up for the next few weeks.

Thankfully all we had in the ground was cabbage and potatoes. Meant to ask dad today if the cabbage is still green. Hopefully this is our last cold spell until October.

I do the same thing avid. Especially if it is 'fishy' looking water. One of my local lakes has a ton of cover and houses some big fish. 5 or 6 times a year I'll get my hopes up after a few successful trips to other lakes, then go to that little 50 acre lake and get skunked. It really gets me down on myself. It is hard to keep a positive attitude when you're getting skunked. That attitude usually gets compounded by getting tangled in every limb on the lake. If I am fishing alone I find that I get negative entirely too quickly. If someone else is along and we're both struggling then I don't get that negative. If the other person is slaying them, then I tend to get a little miffed and start 'playing' instead of fishing.

Confidence and positive thinking are two of the keys to being a successful fisherman. IMO confidence means more than just about anything.

I've been to 8 and would love to know just how much I've spent at all of them total. I'd probably get sick if I had that number. :'(

It was the first time Chinese authorities have officially responded to the uproar in America that has resulted in a ban on gluten imports from Xuzhou Anying Biologic Technology Development Co. and a recall of nearly 100 brands of pet food. "We are 'investigating' this," said Zeng Xing, an official with the press office of the General Administration of Quality Supervision, Inspection and Quarantine. The administration monitors the export of food, animals and farm products. Zeng refused to give any other details but confirmed that China was looking into the claim that the exported wheat gluten contained melamine, a chemical found in plastics and pesticides. Xia Wenjun, another administration official, was cited by the state-run Xinhua News Agency as saying that "sampling and examination" of wheat gluten were under way nationwide but did not elaborate. The probe will center around melamine, Xia said, and the administration will stay in touch with the U.S. Embassy in China. Further measures will be taken "based on developments in the United States," Xia said. Chinese veterinarians and animal rights activists said they were not aware of any reports of deaths in China due to tainted pet food. It is the first recent high-profile incident of a contaminated product being exported from China. In domestic cases such as one involving drug regulators who took bribes to approve shoddy medicine the government has stepped in and promised investigations. According to state regulations, exported food should be inspected by Zeng's administration for poisonous substances. Chinese customs will only clear the product for export if it has a certificate of quality supervision. It wasn't immediately clear if the procedures had been followed in the case of the wheat gluten. Las Vegas-based ChemNutra Inc., which imported the product and shipped it to companies that make pet food, said this week that Xuzhou Anying had never reported the presence of melamine in the content analysis it provided. Mao Lijun, general manager of Xuzhou Anying, on Friday would only say that the allegations were "under investigation." Chemical scares and mass poisonings are common in China, which has been struggling to improve its dismal food-safety record. Manufacturers often mislabel food products or add illegal substances to them. Cooks routinely disregard hygiene rules or mistakenly use industrial chemicals instead of salt and other ingredients. Last year, seven companies were punished for using banned Sudan I dye to color egg yolks red. The industrial dye, used for leather, floor polish and other household chemicals, has been found in various products sold in China, such as roasted meat, chili powder and lipstick. In 2004, at least 12 infants died from malnutrition after drinking formula with little or no nutritional value in eastern China's Anhui province. Zeng, the Chinese official, said a report posted in her administration's official newspaper earlier this week led some to believe China denied exporting any wheat gluten to the United States. She said that the administration meant that it had never exported any wheat gluten containing a rat poison, aminopterin. The New York State Food Laboratory last month identified aminopterin as the likely culprit in the pet food, a finding the U.S. Food and Drug Administration later rejected. So far, the FDA has confirmed about 15 pet deaths, while anecdotal reports suggest hundreds of cats and dogs may have died of kidney failure from the tainted food. The agency identified Xuzhou Anying as the supplier of the tainted gluten and last week blocked imports from the company, which says it produces and exports more than 10,000 tons of wheat gluten a year. Only 873 tons have been linked to the contaminated U.S. pet food, raising the possibility that more of the bad product could still be in China or the United States, which Xuzhou Anying has said is its only foreign market. ChemNutra said last week that none of the contaminated wheat gluten went to manufacturers of food for humans. Wheat gluten is most commonly used as a meat-substitute in vegetarian and Asian cuisines. Mary Peng, a manager of the International Center for Veterinary Services in Beijing, said she's been receiving four to five queries a day from worried pet owners in China asking which food brands are safe. However, there have been no reports of animals sickened by pet food. "We have not had any reports so far of any animals sickened with these particular symptoms," Peng said. "It's very much a public health issue. This should be something that needs to be addressed." A manager in charge of purchasing from Paiduge Pet Food Company in Beijing said she had not heard of any cases of pet poisoning.

They're not the best, but they aren't bad rods for the money. I've got an US Lite that has landed a ton of fish over the last couple of years. The cork is downright darn nasty and you can't feel a thing with it. But it does it's job. If nothing else, they're perfect river rods. I have no qualms about losing a $30 rod when the canoe flips. I can't say the same about an Premier or Avid.

Had never heard of it until now. BPS and my local tackle shop usually have EVERYTHING Zoom and neither have this one. Going to be hard to knock the Zoom finesse worm out of my arsenal though.

ANCHORAGE, Alaska - A commercial fishing boat hauled in what may have been one of the oldest creatures in Alaska a giant rockfish estimated to be about a century old. The 44-inch, 60-pound female shortraker rockfish was caught last month by the catcher-processor Kodiak Enterprise as it trawled for pollock 2,100 feet below the surface, south of the Pribilof Islands in the Bering Sea. The Seattle-based vessel, owned by Trident Seafoods, pulled up an estimated 75 tons of pollock and 10 bright-orange rockfish. Scientists at the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration at the Alaska Fisheries Science Center in Seattle measured, photographed and documented the fish. They removed an ear bone, the otolith, which contains growth rings similar to rings in the trunks of trees. They estimate the rockfish was 90 to 115 years old. That's toward the upper end of the known age limit for shortraker rockfish, said Paul Spencer of the science center. Other estimates put the fish's maximum age at 157 years, Spencer said. The contents of the rockfish's stomach were examined and scientists took tissue samples to measure her reproductive potential. "The belly was large," Spencer said. "The ovaries were full of developing embryos." Scientists said the specimen is not the biggest on record. A 47-inch shortraker rockfish was recorded, according to the book "Fishes of Alaska." Kind of looks like a big old bucketmouth, doesn't it?

You guys are braver men than I. No way in the world I would have been on the water today. Can't imagine how bad the wind was in the NRV today.

I once saw a pretty big river muskie come about 3' out of the water to pluck a bird off an overhanging tree branch. Dad and I sat there for a couple of minutes, looked at each other, and waded back to the shore.

The siren song of a big paycheck is quite tempting, but seeing what those guys go through snaps you back into reality. I sometimes wonder what it would be like to live a life on the sea, then I see shows like Deadliest Catch and I realize that it isn't the life for me.

The last couple of weeks (and the next month or two) have been rough on my wife. A daily dose of Zyrtec barely helps. Wish something would help, woman goes through $20 worth of tissue a month. :-/

To pick just one would be impossible. I go from Nickel Greek to Bill Monroe to Avenged Sevenfold and Slipknot.

Been pouring for the last two hours here. Ground is completely white and my truck is covered. Tuesday it was 78*. Was dying to get on the water, but the yard was almost knee high in spots. :'( Low Sunday morning is supposed to be 18*. Oh well, it is March. Hope my cabbage doesn't bite the bullet.

Just a point, but there is a huge difference between the 7.62x39 (SKS) and the 308 Win/7.62 NATO. Most states do regulate magazine capacity for hunting. Which is why you see a lot of pinned 20 round magazines. Just because a magazine holds 30 rounds or 20 rounds does not mean you have to fill it to capacity.
